Izuogu Dispute Governorship Election Result
THE All Peoples Party (APP) governorship candidate in Imo
State in the January 9 election, Dr. Ezekiel Izuogu, has
said in Owerri that he won the election contrary to the
declaration made by the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) candidate, Chief Achike Udenwa.
Izuogu also claimed that contrary to INEC that election in
one ward, Izuogu ward 1 was inconclusive, election did not
hold in six wards in the state.
The APP also issued its own election results at the weekend
which credits Izuogu with more votes that Udenwa.
The results issued by INEC credits Udenwa with 388,680
votes and Izuogu 379,491, a vote difference of 9,189. But
APP's own result gave Izuogu 379,485 and Udenwa 378,464,
thereby awarding Izuogu victory.
Izuogu's stand apart from enjoying the party's support,
also garnered the nod of former civilian governor of the
State, Chief Sam. Mbakwe and another elder stateman, Dr.
B.U. Nzeribe who in a joint statement described the
election result which favours Udenwa as "outright
subversion of the collective wish and desire of Imo
citizenry"
Izuogu alleged that the governorship election results were
massively falsified and wondered why the result was
announced when election is yet to take place in some wards.
Reminded that the resident Commissioner Alhaji Adamu Hamza
Gaya identified only Izuogu ward 1 as having inconclusive
election, Izuogu said Hamza was misinformed and that he has
drawn his attention to the other five wards.
He demanded that the previously announced results be
rescinded until by-election is held in the remaining wards,
and accused INEC of double standards.
He added: "If the election is concluded and Achike wins, I
will write a congratulatory letter on the spot. But the gap
is so narrow that to announce result of uncompleted
election is terrible. I am not saying that Izuogu must win.
Do the right thing. If my opponent wins I will congratulate
him."
