Abeg you people stop arguing on unverified stories ... !!!!
First of all February 3, 1996 was never a Sunday !!! so the so-called
Sunday times article can't exist (there is not a single mention of
Nigeria in the whole paper !)... even then the only news that was carried
was that Nigeria was GOING TO BE banned ( but this has not happened yet)
by FIFA.
Even then, I'd love to see what statutes FIFA will invoke to ban Nigeria
... the Nations Cup being a CAF competition, FIFA has nothing to do with
it except overseeing that the games are played according to FIFA rules.
If those guys at NFA know their job they could then sue millions out of
FIFA for damages, especially in lost revenue ... I'd encourage them to do
that especially after what FIFA did for the World Cup.
I am in no way in support of the current regime and their
decisions but I do believe that any sanctions to be carried out must be
done in a legal way, especially when the bodies (FIFA,CAF) do not wish to
admit political involvement.
The same can be said of the proposed exclusion from the Olympic
games by the US ... they are not the organisers ... IOC and the
associated sports bodies (FIFA,IAAF ...) are, therefore just like with
France trying to prevent the Nigerian delegation from coming to the WC
draw the same should happen here ... IOC tells them if they want to keep
the games ... they let everyone come.
Maybe then Abacha will think Nigerian athletes are at risk too if they go
to Atlanta !!!
I rest my case ...

Hello DJI,
I appreciate your understanding of the game called soccer but
you seems to miss one point in your last analysis. If it's true that
CAF imposed a four year ban on nigeria because of Abacha then,
technically, she cannot take part in FIFA organised competition.
CAF is the local FIFA rep in the region and world cup elimination
is organised through CAF. Until the military leave politics
in nigeria, we can not talk of revenue. What lost revenue? for ABacha
swiss account or what? I think abacha backyard decision was a direct blow
to all soccer loving nigerians. He is only attracting international isolation
to himself and his comrades.

Maybe I should have been more specific then .. your reasoning holds but
only if the CAF ban had been global i.e. all CAF-organised competitions
... but CAF rules only specify exclusion from future Nations Cup
competitions and not all CAF-organised/supervised ones. To prove this
club competition will allow for fielding of Nigerian teams. There's also
some fine specifics in the meanings of organised and supervised. The WC
finals qualifications are supervised by CAF but those for the Junior
World Cup being the same as the CAF Junior Nations Cup are organised ...
That's why I question the existence of any link btwn FIFA's statutes and
the CAF ban. The problem is this ... a FIFA ban is global and applies to
all national representatives, be they clubsides, or national teams hence
the contradiction with CAF's decision . FIFA would then have to make a
very specific ban stating it is the Super Eagles they want to ban and not
3SC or the Eaglets for example.
About the lost revenue , it was only from a legal point of view (trying
to be a devil's advocate you could say ...) ; if the ban was in no ways
justified by existing statutes then NFA (and not Abacha) could sue for
lost gate takings , TV rights and kit sales & contracts (e.g. the one
they have with Nike).Oh, and they did have a good case when FIFA moved
the Junior World Cup to Qatar ... loads of contracts were revoked and
investments went to waste.

Once more, I rest my case,
