If you are asked to define a good rumor, would you say it one that is mainly
true or one that is mainly false? How about defining a bad rumor? Isn't it the
opposite of a good rumor? If it is, then logically depending on your
definition, a good rumor is the same as a bad one. I had difficulty
understanding the weather forecast. I woke up one morning to listen to the
day's weather, and it said it would be partly cloudy, I took my umbrella. Then
I changed to another station and it predicted a partly sunny day, I took my
sunglasses. To be sure of protecting my outing that day, I went about kiting
my umbrella and wearing my sunglasses. As it turned out, there was neither sun
nor rain. Then this teacher of mine asked in a classical demonstration of
differing perceptions. He poured some water into a glass to the middle and
asked the students if the glass was half empty or half full. Before we even
though about an answer, he had already given us your scores, knowing that
either way our answers would be right and wrong at the same time. Now back to
rumors, of the next two stories below, how would you rank them on a scale of
good to bad, or bad to good, rumor?
OBA LEANS TO CASTRO! SPENDS N63 billion ON TRIPS?
Have you heard the latest about the Obasanjo doldrums, he who champions in
theory the causes of the masses of Nigeria if only they are Yorubas by tribe?
The President who brought about the anti corruption bill with the left hand
and was breaking it with the right hand is at it again. But he is so scared
that he wanted some fresh bodyguards, in the form of Federal Gourds of
Babangida. It is no open secret now that in the presidency, the amount of
money paid recently for hefty Yorubas to go to Cuba and be trained there in
the anti-American land for millions of dollars. The irony is that Americans
are being kept in Sokoto and Lagos, and their presence is felt and heard in
Abuja, it will be interesting how the Oba will keep both Castro men and
Clintons.
That achieved, the presidency is now busy trying to find a way of keeping
sensitive records of moneys spent on overseas trips by number one citizen
since he came to power. Reliable sources say, over sixty three billion Naira
has so far been spent by Obasanjo on trips, he owns the medal of the most
widely traveled President of Nigeria for a short period of one year, and the
most extravagant of poor peoples money on overseas travels without bring
anything to the people but American soldiers!
On the other hand the same Obasanjo is pointing accusing fingers at Na'Abba
for what he was said to have spent on internal trips with his aids, security
team, assistants and other members of the House of Representatives that
traveled with him all for less than twenty million Naira. However, the bribery
displayed by the President will soon swallow the man who kept mocking
Nigerians with his thirst for truth and goodness to the people of Nigeria on
the one hand , and squandering the money from oil windfall without authority
on the other hand.
It is now known that because Atiku is tired of not having anything apart from
the two oil companies the number one and two bought, National and AP,
Vice-President was said to have asked for 340 million Naira for a project in
his state of Adamawa. But it is said that the Bolingo hotel in Abuja which he
owns is the one getting renovated with the amount. See, the powerful are
corrupt and corruptible and corrupting is it not so? Jita –jita.

FREE SANITARY PADS AT GIRLS SCHOOLS DANGEROUS
Some organisation of the world health is said to be distributing sanitary pads
in secondary schools in the northern states of Nigeria and is suspect to foul
play as to stop unknowingly the users from having babies.
It is not clear whether the organization making the distributions had
clearance from both the ministries of education in the various states and the
office of the Governors to ensure that what they were distributing is in fact
free of any hazards.
In one of the colleges in Zaria, Kaduna state where girls were given free
pads, such pads were tested by the students and found to be having some
chemical and makes the pad to inflate itself once wet. This led to high
suspicion and the pads were sent to other more dedicated research centers for
identification and verification of the suspected foul play.
Meanwhile all girls who were given free pads to use by the organization have
dumped the pads and are brased up to refuse any further free gifts of such
suspect pads.
It can be recalled that the treatment for polio as offered by the World Health
Organisation had been a source of worry and suspicion in that it was believed
that the population of the Muslim north of Nigeria is becoming a worry to both
the world powers and their friends and collaborators in the third world in
their need to ensure that the Muslim population is cut to size.
The so called success therefore of the WHO’s administration of its dope for
the children in most northern states is defective as most people still believe
that the medicine was either for the elimination of their children by
injection of AIDS virus, or a means that would make such children impotent
when their maturity age comes and thus render them useless as far as producing
children is concerned.
It is most important that the World Health Organisation takes pains to include
people in the localities where drugs and other items are given free, to ensure
that the contents of whatever they give is 100 per cent pure and foul free.

FELLOW NIGERIANS!
>From the sixties to the eighties, the sound of marshal music indicated that
another soldier is about to change the history of Nigeria. Sometimes, the
country people welcome this with a sigh of relief and at other times with
apprehension. Now that it is no longer fashionable to have military rulers (
take a look at Ivory Coast and Pakistan), How do we survive the boxing matches
in the House of Representatives, the confusion in the Senate, the allegations
of bribery by the Executive, the never-ending drama of political parties, the
tug- of- war of all the ethnic groups and the insecurities of armed robbers?
Professionalism and politics seemed to be sworn enemies in our national life.
Disgraced leaders have turned into national celebrities and their movies in
turn have become box office hits. What is wrong with Nigeria or should I
re-phrase this, what is the problem with Nigeria? That question conjures many
answers. Maybe Nigeria was formulated through a self- righteous, one-way
moral/legal screen with positive image of western values and innocence
portrayed as threatened, validating a campaign of unrestricted political
violence or is it just our peculiar nature. The solution to our many problems
however depend on leadership that for some reason remain unsolved. Where are
the present Ahmadu Bello’s, Awolowos and Azikwes? I am not asking for self-
titled egoistic leaders who always write books about their imaginary
achievements and grants equally deluding interviews.
Often we have all blamed the military for everything that has gone wrong with
Nigeria. Then how comes we are giving them prestigious seats in our national
affairs, if they the military played a major part in the destruction of the
country. If all our ex-military rulers where professionals how come they are
not writing military books or acting as consultants to ECOMOG, or identifying
ways to protect us against armed robbers? Why should any sensible
professional, attend another seminar on the Hilltop on political affairs by a
military man. Why do I need to read a book titled ‘’my command’’ full of
political intrigues written by another military man. Then the answer is not
about the military it must be about the society.
Despite the fact that we craved for democracy, we elected an ex-military man
as the President. Can he ever really understand the norms of democracy,
without dreaming about the good old days of supreme military council? (you
still remember, the time of absolute power). How can we then blame him if he
does not understand or recognise a democratically elected Senate President or
House of Representative’s Speaker. History repeats itself, the ancient Greek
historian Thucydides wrote.
Equally confusing are the men of timbre and calibre (borrowing that colourful
politician’s phrase) of our modern governance. The endless shows of forged
certificates and fraudulent practises, that made us all look as if we voted
for complete strangers to handle our life insurance policy. While we consoled
ourselves with that re-assuring word of transitional period of democracy, as
if we are waiting for another interim government to resurface. With lack of
proper securities which is our fundamental human right as guaranteed by the
military written constitution for the civilians. Unemployment that ought to be
tackled instead of watching the final boxing tournament of the House of
Representatives has been replaced by armed robberies. Now that is easy to
understand, the people, then take law into their own hands without proper
security for life protection. If you don’t speak the same language you become
a suspect and the reason for ethnic clashes. After all it is about the
‘’Animal called Man’’ (you remember the book also written by an ex-general).
Yet the problem is obviously not the military alone but society as a whole.
What about the political road shows, all groups have their own ethnic
organisations with different agenda and often with no Nigerian agenda. Except
maybe the call for a national conference. Yet we are all still struggling to
understand the form it will take. Whereas we all have our solutions to
Nigeria’s problems. Some even advocate for the division of national resources
equally, then maybe our problems might be solved. But do our leaders at least
the self proclaimed ones, that are still standing understand the big burden
of national identity not selfish interest? Society moulds leaders and leaders
in turn builds society.
The way forward will be to elect professionals who can mould our society,
those that understand the need for a welfare society. Those who put our
national interest first rather than ethnic sentiments. We need people with
Vision at the helms of our affairs, not those who only believe in political
patronage. But those who can implement sound economic and political policies.
Individuals who know enough about democratic principles, that will help us
understand that we owe people like Ken Saro-Wiwa, Shehu Musa Yar'Adua and
Moshood Abiola for fighting and dying to keep our great Country a just
society. Not those who will continue to sow the seeds of discord amongst our
various rich ethnic cultures and groups, nor should we continue to fight
because of land and boundary disputes or statistical figures to prove that one
ethnic group has more population than the other. If we continue with the
latter narrow path instead of the richer and prosperous way forward. Not only
are we going to fail to solve our own problems democratically this time. Also
It might not be the familiar voice of FELLOW NIGERIANS, that will be blasted
after the boring marshal tunes but it will be a case of FOLLOW YOUR
INSTINCTS- Hopefully, we pray this has gone to past.
