Bill Surkis, the former Quebec director of Bnai Brith Canada was arraigned on
child pornography charges.
Surkis, 69 is also a director of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre as well
as other prominent positions in the jew community.
The defence lawyer for Surkis is Steven Slimovitch, a lawyer for Bnai Brith
Canada.
Slimovitch admits that each charge against Surkis carries a maximum penalty on
conviction, of 10 years in prison.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Al Qaeda issued an Internet threat against German
soldiers at the weekend, which the government in Berlin said showed
the risk of a Islamist attack on German soil had increased.
Citing Germany's involvement in fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan,
the video message posted on the Internet was titled "The rescue
package for Germany" and bore the logo of As-Sahab, which is al
Qaeda's specialist media arm.
"Your soldiers are safe nowhere," said a masked man dressed in a black
turban in the video posted online late on Saturday. A sign behind his
man's head identified him as "Abu Talha the German" and he spoke in
German with a slight foreign accent.

Identification of the Defendant
[12] I did have some initial concerns as to the
reliability of the plaintiff�s identification of the
defendant as the author of the Postings and the Emails,
notwithstanding the deemed admission of the truth of
the allegations by virtue of the operation of the
Rules, which arguably could be said to only amount to
deemed admissions by a defendant called William
Grosvenor, without there being an evidentiary link to
establish that the person who was served with the
Statement of Claim was the same person who was the
author of the Postings and the Emails.
[13] My review of the evidence satisfies me,
however, that the plaintiff has proved the defendant to
be the author of the Postings and the Emails. I accept
the plaintiff�s analysis of the issue of
identification contained in paragraphs 11�18 of the
Affidavit, as supplemented by his evidence at trial.
[14] The following evidence is particularly
persuasive. In 1996 by way of an Internet posting, a
person who identified himself as William Grosvenor
called on �mature ladies� to contact him at a
certain address in Edmonton. This was the same address
used to serve the Statement of Claim on the defendant
with the same name. The defendant of the same name
responded, giving this same address in his Notice of
Intent to Defend. The Emails began on January 16,
2008, which was the day after the Statement of Claim
had been served on the defendant. The first of the
Emails repeated, in the same words, the invitation to
others to harm the plaintiff and the links to the
plaintiff�s former home address combined with an
aerial photograph, as had been contained in some of the
previous Postings. The further Emails have continued
some of the same patterns exhibited by the Postings in
terms of their style, content and obsessions.

Former B'nai Brith director faces child pornography charges

The former regional director of B�nai Brith in Quebec has been charged
with possessing child pornography.
Bill Surkis appeared Friday at the Montreal courthouse. He had turned
himself in to police earlier this month after a police investigation
resulted in an arrest warrant issued in his name.
Police were notified after a computer repair shop found several
questionable video files on Surkis's PC.
Surkis brought his computer in to the shop for repairs after it became
infected with a virus.
He left his post as director of B'nai Brith Quebec two years ago.
Surkis was the dean of education at John Abbott College for 22 years. He
is also a prominent member of Montreal's Jewish community and was an
executive director of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre.
He was released on bail with several conditions, including that he not
be in the company of minors, he avoid areas where minors gather, and not
use his computer to access the internet.
He also had to surrender his passport and agree to not leave Quebec.
Surkis returns to court on Sept. 24.

Bill Surkis, a prominent member of Montreal's Jewish community, was led
to court in handcuffs Friday to face two charges related to accessing
and possessing child pornography. Surkis, 69, is the former Quebec
Regional Director of B'nai Brith Canada, a Jewish advocacy group. He
also worked in the education sector for 47 years, serving as academic
dean at John Abbott College for more than two decades.
He was released on bail, on a number of conditions that restrict his
access to children and the Internet. Virus check on computer revealed
pornographic material! The child pornography was allegedly discovered
after Surkis took his computer to a store to be checked out for viruses.
Surkis turned himself in on Thursday, and spent the night in jail.
"It was the people at the computer store who noticed these images on his
computer," said CTV Montreal's Rob Lurie, reporting live from the
Montreal courthouse. "We're talking about 23 videos, allegedly of child
pornography, found on the hard drive of his computer," Lurie added.
The employees at the computer notified police of the suspicious material.
Reaction: Surkis spoke briefly to reporters Friday afternoon before
leaving the Montreal courthouse. Surkis said members of the Jewish
community will be disappointed by the news of the charges against him,
but said he remains hopeful that he will maintain his reputation.
"They're serious charges. We're looking into them. My lawyer's working
with me. We're coming back to court on September 24th and we'll proceed
from there." "They know me as a staunch individual, they know that I've
stood for what is right. I continue to stand for what is right. That's
why we're doing the things that we're doing so that we can clear my name."
When Surkis was asked how the pornographic material ended up on his hard
drive, his lawyer, Steven Slimovitch, intervened.
"Look, I think that's something that we can discuss when the time
comes...it's not a question of denying...it's a question of looking at
what is it we're talking about, looking at everything, and dealing with
everything," said Slimovitch.
"We're not hiding. We voluntarily went to the police station yesterday.
We are fully cooperating with the police. We've accepted the conditions
that the crown prosecution has put (in place) and we're taking the
matter very, very seriously," he added.
