I know that prostitution in the Netherlands is legal and has been
legal for a long time. But, are prostitutes there socially accepted?
Or are they generally looked down upon and shunned?

Prostitution was legalized in The Netherlands in the year 2000.
Although their profession is legal, their job isn't socially accepted.
In most cases they can't get loans when they want to start their own
business. (most prostitutes want to work independent from managers of
sex clubs to get a bigger cut of their earnings)
Most people look down on prostitutes and prostitutes are shunned.

The red thread foundation (Stichting Rode Draad in Dutch) is a
foundation which acts like a union for prostitutes. They can probably
tell you more on the position of prostitutes in The Netherlands. You
can mail them at in...@rodedraad.nl.
