A Washington, D.C.-based pro-family group is urging its constituents to
protest the fact the Bush administration has approved an exception in its
visa policy to allow foreigners with HIV or AIDS to come into the United
States for the "Gay Games" in Chicago this July.
The United States is the only nation that has a restriction on people
carrying HIV, but it bestowed "Designated Event Status" to the athletic
event so infected people could travel to America to either participate or
watch the games. The exception will be in effect from a week before the
quadrennial event until six days after the closing date.
"On the official Chicago Gay Games website, just as much emphasis is put on
'entertainment' as on the event itself," said Family Research Council
President Tony Perkins in an e-mail to supporters. "This entertainment
includes links to bathhouses and clubs where illicit and illegal activity is
allowed."
Continued Perkins on the exemption: "The tragedy is that there are Americans
who may well be infected with a deadly disease as a direct result of this
most unwise decision. Why should this administration feel the need to bow to
the politically correct crowd?"
[ed. Cause it's the squeeky wheel what gets the grease...]
Organizers of the games were pleased with the rule bending, which was
announced last month.
"This is going to raise registration because it immediately increases our
pool of potential registrants to HIV-positive people as well as their
partners," Steve Kauffman, Gay Games spokesman, told the Advocate.
According to a report in the Chicago Tribune, Gay Games co-vice chairman
Kevin Boyer said the government routinely waives the HIV rule for events
like the Olympics and for conferences. The last Gay Games in the U.S., held
in San Francisco in 1994, received a travel waiver from President Clinton.
