Hello,

I am looking for information concerning the abovementioned familynames. There
are several readings where the name originates from:

1 - EGGERMONT (also written as EGGERMOND and EGGERMONDE) is a name known
already in the very oldest Dutch litariture. There even was an EGGERIC VAN
EGGERMONDE who planned on killing the emporer "Karel the great". Unfortunately
that costed him his own life.

2 - AIGREMONT (also written as DEIGREMONT and DENGREMONT) is a name one finds
in France. It could be that during the "reformation" quite a few of these
people flew up north. Fact is, that one often sees the name EGGERMONT in the
Flemish part of Belgium. The same goes for the French equivalent AIGREMONT,
which is found in the Wallonian part.
There also stilI is, for example, a formal farm called AIGREMONT in the
neighbourhood of Lille - France. Also in France there are 4 villages called
AIGREMONT; 1 in "le departement du Gard, 1 in "le departement de l'Yonne, 1 in
"le departement de la Haute-Marne" and 1 in "le departement des Yvelines". I
am in the posession of quite some detailed information on this.

3 - In Cumberland - U.K. - we find the village of EGREMONT, together
with the ruins of the castle EGREMONT. According to the major of the village
there is no connection with the French name AIGREMONT. The name however has
the same meaning in both French and English: "steep hill". I just learned from
a Compuserve-member that you can also find a village called EGREMONT in Quebec
- Canada.

In spite of all kinds of details known it is hard to find links to the French
or maybe British connections of my familyname. I would be grateful for any
information one could give me.

Questions ? Feel free to ask ! But please reply only via e-mail...

Thanks in advance.

Paul and Frans,

I take it you know that your name appears in one of Dickens'
novels, I believe The Tale of Two Cities, and one of the main
characters too. Please let me know what you might find out,
because the name carries such a power in the novel that I would
like to know if there is a reason Dickens chose it specifically.
