When I see, hear, read, watch, motivation, eagerness, interest,
the reasons, my fellow Nepalis trying to quit Nepali Citizenship,
nationality , and ultimately the Green Colored Passport, I am
asked to find the ways to quit my nationality by birth? Instead
of replying to the question "How to acquire Nepali Nationality?",
I want to ask "How to quit Nepali Nationality?" What are the
ways?

As I told my interest to return Nepal, after I finish my 3 years
of PDS here, I was suggested to find/keep alternatives if I get
frustrated with the situtation in Nepal. I was told that the
way I look at Nepal, is changed a quite since I left Nepal,
in the last decade. The information I had now is not the current
state of Nepal, it was of '80, where if you have good education
you could get good job, if you had good score in Campus, you
could get easily admission in university or scholarship. Now,
when I find my cousine with 85% in I.SC. just boiling to get
an addmission in a technical university because of the lack of
fund "The Donation(=backdoor bribe): University, Embassies,
Visa Officers demand", I have started questioning is that the
real situation? Is it so difficult to get education? Has all
the education gone to those who hold money? So, we are not
going to see any never-the-second brilliants from Poor family?
Is that the reason BRB crying for? If Nepal has changed so
much in a decade, what I can expect in next decade i.e. millinium?
Should I forget my nationality, and concentrate on myself, myfamily,
my relatives and if trigger the this relative term, How can I
forget it? Does anyone have right answer?

If you are given option to choose natinalities, what can be your
preferences: based on the current possibilities available e.g.

1. USA: DV Lottry system/ Graudate Studies................
2. Canada: Independent Migration system: quite costly for a Nepali family.
3. Australia: Resonable Cost, for technical professionals, university
student first and then apply for the citizenship/permanent residency
4. NewZeland: resonable cost, but, too far and lonely place. For aged
applicant, difficult, if your spouse don't have 16years of education,
i.e. MAsters degree from Nepal, or else no NZ employer at hand before
filing the application.
5. european countries: Many nepalis have settled there as political
refugees exploiting the '90s movement in Nepal, most of them
called themselves as Pancha and showed the new government looking for
their head............. Specially, Germany which had liberal law
at that time. I heard Germany has changed its procedure for
naturalization process. I met one ex-Gurkha in my last trip to
London, who said if you work there in England, you are entitled
to get British citizenship.
6. Singpore: One Chinese friend whom I met in Singpore was suggesting me
to move to singapore and telling that working condition is better
than in Japan. When I met another southasian, he told that its not
like he told if you are specially of non-chinese origin. I am not
sure, but, my former Guru recommended that Singapore is fairly
good place.

Please enlist other possibilities in Middle East, Africa, South AMerica,
and other parts of the world where middle class and lower can Nepalis
can think of migrating for their better life style.

Hoping to get some comment-----suggestions.

Pokhrel ji,

If you are born in Nepal with Nepali father and mother you can never quit
your Nepali nationality. Taking the nationality of other countries or
working in other countries will never change your natural nationality.
Wherever you go evils (which worries you and me) from Nepal will follow
you. You can never stop reading Nepali newspapers, preferably meeting
Nepali or using Soc.Culture. Nepal. When you will live in some white
countries, you inevitably need to mention your country of origin. Even you
live in India, US or Australia or Europe, you will be still called Nepali.
Your holidays will be in Nepal.

There is nothing to gain or lose whether you work either in Nepal or
elsewhere. World is very small nowadays. Try to go anywhere where you find
better opportunity. Take any other nationality if it helps you. This will
not change your real born nationality. You will be still Pokhrel, not JOHN
or PATTERSON. You may be criticised by those who are looking for an
opportunity but have not got one (but they will not talk about if you go to
India as thousands work there).

The best place to go is anywhere you find an opportunity. Any other place
except South Asia (Sri-Lanka is not that bad) are relatively better to
live. You may be better financially and peaceful mentally, but you still
will have to be a Nepali (a symbol of poor and service providing people).

I am struck by the paradoxical thinking our saathi Bhesh Bhandari
exhibits. On the one hand, he urges Nepalis to be as such no matter
where they go and live for "better opportunity". That's his
open-mindedness.

But on the other hand, when non-Nepalis (mostly, Indians) come to
Nepal to avail themselves of similar "better opportunity", suddenly
Bheshji discards his "[w]orld is very small" thinking, and throws out his
"take any other nationality if it helps you" kind of bichar, and displays
basically, what I perceive to be, close-mindedness.

How is a regular reader of Bheshji's posts to reconcile these two
differnt avatars of him? Could he please enlighten?

Cynically speaking, world has become much bigger and wider
than it was before this century. In the previous century, world travellers
have much more freedom, but, the clear national boundaries, the
visa system is not allowing us the freedom we had in the past. If
the world had such rules since long time back, we would hardly move
from Africa, the motherland for the mammals in Earth. The world
is small for the peoples living in rich countries who get visa
on arrival. For we nepali citizens, it is still a big world. Thats
why I am thinking to if migrate, say sayonara to my passport.
Japan does not accept foreigners so easily as is available in
the countries I mentioned before. Some one Nepali who was permanent
residence in one of the countreis I mentioned in my earlier posting,
when came to Japan in some fellowship, the Japanese Embassy did not
accept him as a permanent resident, and considered him still Nepali and
asked to submit many many documents, while others who had changed
the citizenship of the country like USA, get visa on arrival. When
you want to be officially called an Australian while travelling
in other rich countries, why should I keep my identity just for the
sake of once in blue moon travel to Nepal. That way, I neither I
find myself easy, nor Nepal gets any benefit. It would be better
to consider ourselves fully Australian, or American or canadian
or NZer wherever we settle. It might be the reason, I have hardly
met any Nepali origin peoples who have left and fully satisfied
with the new environment. But, when I will make my decision to
switch to new citizenship, I will not have two faces.

This is my understanding.

>Try to go anywhere where you find

Like economists say, you have many demands and you make priority
list to suit your resource. It further says, human have infinite
needs, but, we have to sort them out based on priority. Not all
these demands can be satisfied. Meanwhile, these needs also change
with time, age, and environment, availability of resource. So,
what helps me is very much vague. I still remember the professor
with whom I requested to give some recommendation to a Japanese
university. He suggested me to give up the idea of going to Japan,
and being himself a southasian, he told me to try to migrate to
some other countries which allows you to change citizenship incase needed.
He further promished me to find some good universities in other
rich countries, not in Japan. Because, he told me that your
current need is to go for studies, but, once you finish studies,
you will want to work, make money, depending on the political
situation in your country, you may want to settle there
permanently. But, at that time, I thought he was telling
me BAKABAS. Because the scholarship that Japanese govt. offered
was an excellent, the highest in the world. I reached to
other professor, and he signed on the recommendation letter.
I got help. Everyone was rushing to come to Japan, I got
good university, excellent professor, excellent lab facility,
excellent research project. It helped me a lot. But, the
problem I never faced before, the language: thousands of
Kanjis, makes me to much frustrated and sometime the communication
problem, I get here, now does not help to satisfy my feelings.
When I analyze myself, my education, my working experiences,
my country's current situation, political and economic condition,
my countrymate, their behavior, their attitude towards me and
my activities,
I have started feeling that am I a obsolete OB, useless to my
country of origin? The studies, knowledge, technology, I
have gathered are all seems useless in the present context
of Nepal. In such situation, I have just started to feel
whether migrating fully to other countries will help me?
Really? Am I a Gypsy boy?

So, what helps me is very difficult to judge.
How far should I look? Its unpredictiable. So, now
a days when someone ask me about the Japanese universities,
I clearly suggest them if you want to get rid of the poverty,
corruption, difficulty in Nepal permanently don'T try here.
The question is: like me, everyone thinks of immediate help
to get rid of the problem at hand, when it get solved, these
ambitious people look for help to solve the next stage problem.
So, how do you define/explain "Take any other nationality
if it helps you...."

Since there seems to be a big urge to be non Nepali, for those of us who are
still Nepali, we should have ways to distinguish the converted ones from the
Nepalis. Here are, in my mind, 10 ways to pick out the converted or "no longer
Nepali's."

Drumm roll please.....:

1 ) Drives European cars instead of Camry, Sentra, Corolla, or any Japanese
counter part.
2 ) Has names like Herman (Hemanta), Slash (Shailesh), Sean (Bhushan), Rob
(Rabindra) etc..
3 ) Rents hindi movies from Blockbuster only.
4 ) Adamant about eating "rice" and "lentil" every day, maybe some "pickle" on
the side.
5 ) Will eat Pan Parag only if the box says "Export Only."
6 ) Still can't understand how beer bottles could have sunk the Titanic.
7 ) Makes excellent "khashi ko steak"
8 ) Will not accept Rupees (Only $$$) in paplu.
9 ) Khukuri has the sticker "Born to be wild."
10) Goes to Nepal for "vacation."

Reply to this post or send me some mail if you have some to add to the list. Its
ironic that Mr. Pokhrel has chosen a Nepali news group to seek advise, Hmm!!!
