distinguished archive of past Ateliers.
The Maestras Atelier featuring: Yreina E. Cervantez, Diane Gamboa, Barbara
Carrasco, Laura Alvarez, Noni Oblabisi, Favianna Rodriguez, Margaret Guzman,
Pat Gomez, Rose Portillo, Delilah Montoya and Yolanda Lopez
The one day fund-raiser will be an opportunity for collectors of Chicano Art to
acquire the finest prints at affordable prices."
I encourage those of us in the Los Angeles region to attend with a few dollars
in your hands. For $25 to $50 you can own an original work of chicanarte.
When you tour today's hoity-toity galleries you'll see prints by "known"
chicana and chicano artists selling for several thousands of dollars, artists
who got their start at Self-Help. Y sabes que, even if these printmakers never
get famous, if you see something you like, it'll hang on your wall forever. The
joy the work gives you will be priceless.

Anyway, it sounds like a fun way to spend an afternoon, but I have to
check the calendar on the fridge and pass it by She Who Must Be Obeyed.

ROTFL! When my mom used to take me to modern art museums when I was a
kid, she'd sometimes end up, red-faced, asking "so what's it like
getting a liberal education?"
I suppose if you could always say, "Mija/o sometimes a taco is only a
taco," and feel like a lying heel. They'll understand the mentira,
later, and pass it on to their kids. :)
Ever seen Rivera's "Temptation of St. Anthony? What's with all those
fruits and vegetables? I mean, they make me hungry, but not for food.
WHY?
You guys make me wish I was down that way more frequently with these
posts, but it sounds like a great weekend and a great cause. Good

Ese, Manuel, invite the old lady along, and bring the kids. We'll force a 3
pound Manuel's Special Burrito on each them ("clean your plate, mocoso, think
of the starving millions in Michoacan"), then make your esposa responsible for
comforting them in the car while we check out the guapas and their tacos at the
exhibit. Myself, I'll have a bowl of menudo and a regular Oakie.
OK, so you've attended a few of these shows and know that certain chicana -o
artistas tend to the perverse. I usually find 1 or 2 good ones to make up for
the flaccid taco metaphors, or the poorly pastiched Frida-like pieces.
"Grace" is my tatooed prima. Oh, you were referring to that period between
placing the plate before you and the first bite. Usually it's a silent "glad

By the buey, I called El Tepeyac yesterday and they promised that all who
attend from my invite on SCMA would be treated to a special re-enactment of the
original Tepeyac miracle. Simply arrive dressed as the original Juan Diego and
bring your own roses. (Am i cagando diablos yet?)
I'm still waiting to hear from all youse other guys out there. If you want to
show up a la brava, ok, but if you want me to pick up the tab you'll have to
identify yourselves by wearing your traje peonaje or a pink carnation between
your teeth.

Definitely she won't go for that. She is not the kind of woman who puts
up with that kind of expectation: the woman with the children and the
men out there looking at obscene renderings of tacos. She comes from a
long line of strong-minded and independent women. If they were like that
back in the old country, imagine how they have gotten here in the land
of womyn lib.

Well, no, but I've been to the LACMA and once blundered into an exhibit
in which the pieces were described as "defecations" complete with photos
of the "artist" and a girlfriend squatting and "creating" pieces. Not to
mention that piece that got that docent fired.

I won't go as Juan Diego...what I really want to go is as the advocatus
diaboli, ie the devil's advocate, or priest who has to put the
skeptic's case when the discussion regarding a miraculous apparition
takes place...I get to wear dominican uniform and fake horns and get to
burn heretics...just imagine driving all the way from Tejas to Califas
dressed like that...ought to be a blast...I am sure the migra
roadblocks will understand when I explain that I am wearing the threads
to go see some chicanas' taco pictures.

fingers taipiared el otro dia.
But i notice his ruca has him wrapped around her little finger. "She who must
be obeyed" will undoubtedly give her permission, particularly if Pomponio shows
up as el cagadiablos Zavanarola (though I thought he'd show up as the severed
withered leg of Generalissimo Santa Anna).
So the Self Help Graphics Annual Print Exhibition & Fundraiser Pachanga looks
to be well underway.
Pomponio, pack a few gallinas en la Matilda (leave off the piojos and pulgas,
though), we'll see you at 11:30 at the top of Evergreen hill.
Manuel, apologize to "she who must be" for me, and promise you'll bring her a
little trinket from the SHG store.

Matilda only got as far as Falfurrias. Had to shoot the old girl. I
had to walk back 50 miles with Crestina and Grendel under my arms. No
one seemed to want to give a ride to a dude wearing dominican outfit,
fake horns, and carrying two lice-infested chickens. What is this
world coming to?!! O tempora, o mores!
