Ex-Bank Negara Governor Jaffar Hussein dies
PETALING JAYA, Tues. - Former Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Jaffar
Hussein died at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre today. He was 67.
Jaffar's son-in-law, Nur Jazlan Mohamed, said he died at 4.30pm from
pneumonia and other complications. Jaffar had been admitted to the
SJMC 10 days ago.
He is survived by his wife Puan Sri Rohila Abdul Rahman, daughter
Rossana, 34, two sons, Roshan, 31, and Roslan, 22, and three
grandchildren.
The body was brought back to the house in Bukit Damansara at 6.30pm.
Jaffar will be buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery at 11am
tomorrow.
Born in Parit Jawa, Muar, in 1931, Jaffar qualified as an accountant
with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Queensland,
Australia, in 1958.
He spent the first 28 years of his career with Price Waterhouse where
he rose to become regional chairman for its accounting practices in
Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, and was one of its 20 partners.
Jaffar joined Malayan Banking Berhad in 1981 as its chairman and chief
executive.
On June 1, 1985, he was made the fourth Governor of Bank Negara, a
post he held until 1994.
Jaffar's death came just over a month after the death of the country's
longest serving Central Bank governor Tun Ismail Mohamed Ali, who died
on July 6.
A self-made man who was a salt-maker during the Japanese Occupation,
Jaffar was instrumental in setting up the Securities Commission and
mooted among others, the Banking and Financial Institutions Act,
Cagamas Berhad and Rating Agency Malaysia Berhad.
His illustrious career included the chairmanship of Malaysia Mining
Corporation Bhd in 1996.
