Speech by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary-General and
MP for Tanjong, Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP ceramah held at Simpang Empat,
Bagan Datok, Perak on Saturday, 26th December 1998 at 9 p.m.

Samy Vellu should explain whether he had spent over RM1 million for
his son’s wedding
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Half a year ago, the MP for Bagan Datok, Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi,
when he was the UMNO Youth Leader, was a strong voice in UMNO against
corruption, cronyism and nepotism.

Now, however, Zahid seems to have recanted from his earlier public
stand demanding an all-out war against corruption, cronyism and
nepotism - even to the extent of denying that Malaysia is afflicted
with such social cancers. This is clearly another proof of the power
and efficacy of the Special Branch techniques of "neutralising" and
"turning over" Internal Security Act detainees to make them stop
seeing things they have seen or stop believing in matters which they
had at one time thought important for the country and people.

However, the Special Branch may be able to "neutralise" and "turn
over" dozens or scores of people who fall victim into their hands,
whether as a result of the Internal Security Act or other draconian
laws of the land, but the important question is whether it can
"neutralise" and "turn over" the entire population to make Malaysians
believe that there is no problem of corruption, cronyism and nepotism
in Malaysia.

Recently, there was a posting on the Internet which was later
republished in a printed publication which alleged that the MIC
President and Works Minister, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu spent at least
RM1 million ringgit for the wedding of his son, Dato' Paari Vellu, two
weeks ago.

This is not an anonymous posting but was the writing of a well-known
Malaysian journalist, and if his allegation is true, raises many
questions about the ostentatious style of living of Barisan Nasional
leaders which are completely at odds with the government’s call of
belt-tightening to the people in the midst of the country’s worst
economic crisis in history.

For a start, Samy Vellu should explain whether he had spent over or
close to RM1 million for his son’s wedding and if so, where the money
had come from.

Below is 25 Dec, Asiaweek excerpt.

Proud with Malaysian who's who wedding party by "Tuan" Samy. Recommend
to add in our Bolehland's national record Book after we have "paling
panjang", "paling tahan lama" etc records, now we have "paling mewah".

TOO LAVISH AN AFFAIR?

IT HAS BEEN DUBBED the wedding of the year. The bride wore a
traditional South Indian costume, heavy gold jewelry and fragrant
flowers. There were singers from Bombay, a dance troupe from
Hyderabad, a percussionist from Madras and a sitar player from Brunei.
Prominent guests included Malaysia's King TUANKU JA'AFAR TUANKU
ABDUL RAHMAN and Queen TUANKU NAJIHAH, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
and his wife SITI HASMAH, Tamil film icon SHIVAJI GANESAN and J.H.
PATEL, chief minister of the southern Indian state of Karnataka.
Diplomats, politicians and business leaders were also present to see
S. VELL PAARI, 36, a businessman and son of Malaysia's Public Works
Minister S. SAMY VELLU, tie the knot with SHAILA NAIR, 24, a law
graduate. Some 8,000 guests attended the formal wedding ceremony in
the morning and ate a sumptuous lunch. Another 5,000 came for dinner.
For Vellu, a one-time draughtsman, the Dec. 13 extravaganza was
evidence that the minority, ethnic Tamil politician had made it good
in his Malay-majority homeland. But the bash raised more than a few
eyebrows, coming as it did in the midst of Malaysia's worst financial
crisis.

Only he who steals knows best how to spend it.

And one who has been stealing for more than 2 decades needs no advise on
how to spend and also get away with it.
