Telekom Malaysia enters portal arena with BlueHyppo.com

PETALING JAYA: Telekom Malaysia, the local giant telecommunications
carrier, is all set to enter the portal arena with its big-bang launch
of BlueHyppo.com tomorrow at the KLCC concourse.
Sources say Telekom Malaysia is allocating RM45 million on
BlueHyppo.com with the target of making it into the country's most
popular homegrown portal.
Teaser advertisements in the local papers over the last few days
feature a blue hippopotamus that is supposed to reflect the
BlueHyppo.com's sheer size and breadth.
BlueHyppo.com which will feature five popular channels - news,
finance, technology, lifestyle and Chinese, is designed to appeal to
Net surfers of all ages and interests.
The five popular channels are scheduled to be up and running by the
time of the launch and more channels are set to be added progressively
as the portal gains popularity.
BlueHyppo.com will also feature a host of value added services to
provide an incentive for Netizens to keep coming back to the site.
Surfers should be able to trawl the web for any interesting nuggets of
information they require, keep in close touch with friends and fellow
netizens around the globe via free web mail and develop their own
personal, customised space in the world wide web arena.
The friendly BlueHyppo will be the site's mascot, tasked with leading
surfers to discover, read or download content that is touted to be
engaging, comprehensive and ever expanding.
The portal claims it will have unrivaled reach and effectiveness,
thereby justifying BlueHyppo.com's tagline "You're sure to find it!"
Sources say Telekom Malaysia is confident of recording an estimated
120 million page views in its first year and is projecting that
BlueHyppo.com should garner more than 2 billion page views by the year
2005.
Strangely enough, Telekom Malaysia's singularly upbeat hopes for
BlueHyppo.com's success is in stark contrast to IDC's report last
month on the bleak outlook for portals.
IDC a global research company, stated in its report that portal
consolidation will begin this year and will continue through 2002.
The report titled Asia's Internet Portals: Survival, Viability, and
Extinction highlights the fact that the current market downturn has
turned general sentiment against the portal concept and there is real
concern about the ability of portals to generate revenue.
It further states that most are bleeding cash and are nowhere near
profitability. eCommerce revenues, it said, have yet to materialise
and advertising revenues are dwindling.
The report states clearly that the outlook is not good for most
players.
"To be fair, there are some shining stars out there, but these are few
and far between," the report stated.
"Internet users are increasing rapidly. They will utilise portals, but
the question is whether or not the time is ripe for them to become
consumers," the report states.
The IDC report also said that it will take years before living
standards and corporate maturity reaches a point where revenue
streams, apart from advertising, will make sense.
It said that some markets such as Korea, Taiwan, and Australia will be
ready sooner, but as a whole, Asia/Pacific will need time to develop.
The report goes on to state that the challenge for portals will be to
survive until such time when their business models begin to make sense
in the context of the economic environment.
With such a dismal outlook, BlueHyppo.com certainly has a huge task
ahead. It would be interesting to see if this late comer to the portal
scene will end up as the big interactive winner that Telekom Malaysia
envisions.

How many of you have your "Home" page set to a portal?
I start my browser as a blank page. I don't go to any portals.
Hippo, hmm... blue too... hmmm...
blue-hippo = porn-giant? heheh
As for searching, I usually use the bigger search engines. Localised search
engines sometimes return crappy results.
Yahoo! is okay, Altavista so-so, but usually, I don't have to search beyond
three search engines to get what I'm looking for.

What RM45 Million for such portal? That amount should set aside to
improve line and connection quality rather than for a stupid portal
like that. There're plenty of good portals like thestar.com and
yahoo.com around and what makes these peoples at telekom think that
we're going to choose their portal instead?
To be fair, this new portal is much better than many local portals although
I
dislike Telekom.

You are tricked by those big money spender local search engines. They don't
bother the quality in the first place except aiming for quick result or
buck.
You can try this search engine www.searchmalaysia.com and let me know do you
find crappy results compared to others like Cari and Catcha.
Yahoo! sometimes copied our listings to be included in Yahoo!directory. We
admit we do the reverse also.

dmoz.org maintained by volunteers is quite good. AOL and google are using
their database too. Personally I judge google.com can produce better
accuracy
then other search engines.

Yahoo is too Americanised. We need few local portals to cater for the local
taste. China has few good local portals like sohu.com, netease.com,
china.com.
The scope of these portal are customised for the local taste. That is why
Yahoo fails to concur China market. You will appreciate the scopes covered
in
these portals if you know to read mandarin. Superb!
Google also using dmoz.org database for more accurate search results. You
will
notice the first few results are linked back to dmoz.org. I also give
google.com as the best general purpose search engine. For instance I can
pinpoint to my tiny ex-primary school's website by the name of the school.
That is an impossible task from other search engines!

I never say I dislike this new portal. Which sentence mentioned that I
dislike this new portal?

Do you not understand English? I use INTERNATIONAL search engines.
LOCALISED search engines sometimes return CRAPPY RESULTS.

Yes, CARI and CATCHA also returns some CRAPPY results sometimes (not always)
(As compared to Yahoo, with SAME search phrase entered)

Really fast too.
Mine is set to http://my.yahoo.com/?myhome , Personalize My Yahoo page.
I don't think I would consider setting my "Home" to a portal page that
can't be personalized. I note that www.bluehyppo.com 's Personal
HomePage, seems to be a personal homepage, not personalized bluehyppo's
portal ...

I wonder did you visit their website first before you commented on them?

Internarional search engine can tell you the "crappy results" of local
search
engines. Do you know how to talk logically?

Running away from the original issue...
I NEVER MENTIONED THAT I LIKE/DISLIKE THE NEW PORTAL.
So stop running away and keep changing issues every time you post a reply.

YOU JUST QUALIFIED FOR MY BLOCK SENDER LIST.
CONGRATULATIONS.
I say that I use INTERNATIONAL SEARCH ENGINES.
That's because LOCALISED ones sometimes return crappy results.
This SOB Black14 should have been killed in the Black 14!
Don't bother to reply, coz I won't be reading it anyway.
