I am confused by the Singapore Police action on prostitution. I refer to
the 2 cases currently before the courts. One is the Shing Budget Hotel in
Kitchener Rd.and the other Hotel 81 China Town / Hotel 81 Jalan Besar. The
two hotels are being hauled up for allowing prostitutes to utilized the
rooms to ply their trade.
On record, Prostitution is illegal in Singapore, but for more than 40
years the vice had been allowed to flourish discreetly in the island
republic. (Desker Road, Geylang, Clemenceau, River Valley , Still Rd etc).
Th Government recognized the need for the vice, to accommodate the
biological desires of foreign workers, as well as pacify wild Singaporeans.
The houses of assignation flourished.
Now Singapore suddenly exhibits a Puritan Outlook, and all hell is expected
to break loose.
I am just wondering if the PAP Government realizes that the 2 multi-
billion Casino Complexes (IR and Sentosa Genting) will eventually be no
better than the above mentioned, Shing and Hotel 81.
Gambling and vice(prostitution) go hand in hand,. You cannot have one
without the other.
It is indeed a very interesting situation to watch. Will there be one set
of laws for high rollers and another for the likes of you and me?

In the first place, who booked the room? Is the man who booked the
room or is the girl booked the room?
1. Prostitution is legal in Singapore (but workers must have
'license' and regular medical check-up).
2. Unregistered prostitution is illegal in Singapore.
3. Solicitation is illegal in Singapore.
4. Pimping is illegal in Singapore.

They are taken to court because they have no written permission to
knowingly
rent their rooms to prostitutes. But if the hotels don't know that
prostitutes are
doing business in their hotels, then the court can do nothing. Written
permission
is very important, just like a Muslim man must have written permission
to have
two wives. If he doesn't, he and his wife can be stoned to death. So
it has nothing
to do Puritan Outlook...;) It has everything to do with written
permission (license).

What are you talking about? There are plenty of gamblers who do not
prostitute,
especially when they losing tons of money, and most of them do.
Now if I won the SuperLotto I want to go to Singapore too....
Ultimately, it all boils down to where the money goes. When it is
legalized, the money goes to the government so that they can better
manage the vice. As the vice will not go away, the next best thing is
to manage it, health screening, containment, prevent exploitation,
etc.
Actually prostitution in Singapore is not illegal aka not a criminal
offense, but solicitation in public space is.
As for the use of any premises that explicitly supports or promotes
"legal" or "illegal" prostitution, it is not that clear and very hard to
prove. In Singapore, since all brothels have to be registered with the
Police and all prostitutes plying their trade in Singapore have to
undergo monthly medical check, if a licensed hotel becomes a
"unlicensed" brothel, the onus is for the Police to prove the hotel and
related persons are active participant towards the solicitation of
clients for its prostitutes. For example, if the hotel owner "offers"
prostitutes to hotel clients by knocking hotel guest doors or happened
to know prostitutes and promotes their activity, they will be haul to
court soon. You realize the Police is going after the hotel owner, and
not the hotel itself. If the Police decided to go after the Hotel, their
premise will be gone in no time !
In the pass, i understand the Singapore Police often raid hotels and
check for prostitution activity because many prostitutes are either
foreigners, unlicensed, working illegally and forced into it. This is
similar to Police raiding KTV or nite clubs. However, the Police often
go after the support system aka the premise owner, pimps, agents, etc,
etc, rather than the prostitutes themselves and most of them are either
deported or released.
I think the Sg govt regard prostitution in Singapore as a "hygiene"
problem aka AIDS or STD problem rather than a law and order problem. The
trouble now is there are too many "promoters" aka "pimps", " human
traffic agents" forcing women, local or otherwise into a trade that is
not socially acceptable. They need to draw a line somewhere.
Prostituition is not illegal but soliciting is. Words from the street
is that Sing garmen wants to unlicensed the geylang brotels soon.
Letting the existing aging owners die off and no new license be given.
With the two IR in operation, garmen wants to promote social escort
instead. Probably, they are hoping to get more money from them in
taxes and more prestige than the geylang whores. So singaporeans have
to fork more money for their fucks now

In other words, what the PAP government want is making sure they can benefit
from these legalized fuck-shops. They are the biggest pimps.
Don't you like money?:)
