KUALA LUMPUR - The armed robber who was shot dead after a
bank heist on Monday was the son-in-law of a Malaysian
senator.
Teng Mun Hoong, 32, married the daughter of Datuk Poh Yew
Chai, a Malaysian Chinese Association veteran, four years
ago, according to Chinese newspaper Sin Chew Daily.

Teng became an outlaw to feed his gambling habit, reported
the Malay Mail.
He was heavy into horse-racing and was said to have been hit
hard when he made big bets in the first few matches of the
Fifa World Cup competition.
The losses probably prompted him to go for another hit at
the Maybank branch in Bandar Sri Damansara, Kepong, outside
the capital, which resulted in him being killed in a
shoot-out with police. His accomplice was arrested.
Had the duo escaped, they would have made off with almost
RM1 million (S$472,400) which they had taken from the bank.
Teng and his gang were said to have amassed between RM5
million and RM6 million from at least 10 bank robberies in
the past year.
