I noticed that the first letter of Malaysia's number plates seem to
follow a pattern, such as the following:

J=Johor
W=Kuala Lumpur
B=Selangor
M=Melaka

This is an interesting system in that you can tell what state a car is
from. Just wondering, what are the codes for the other states? Sabah &
Sarawak? Brunei?

Terima kasih in advance for all replies.

Regards,

Here are the codes for car registrations for Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei
AFAIK.

S = Sabah
(1st. letter S for Sabah; 2nd. letter indicates town; number (1 to 4);
last letter is series)
Eg: SA 8888 B (S for Sabah; A for KK; no. 8888; B series)
ST232 E (S for Sabah; T for Tawau; no. 232; E series)
SS1987 D (S for Sabah; S for Sandakan; no. 1978; D series)
SB 338 (S for Sabah; B for Beaufort; no.338; no series)
SU 456 D for Keningau
SK 12 A for Kudat
SD 232 C for Lahad Datu
SL 332 B for Labuan (old)
LA 691 for Labuan (new)
Note: Earlier registrations would not have the last letter for series.

Q=Sarawak

OLD System:
(1st. letter for town; 2nd. letter is series, numbers (1 to 4); last
letter Q for Sarawak)
Eg: ME 5040 (M for Miri; E series, no. 5040)
KC 123 Q (K for Kuching; C series; no. 123; Q for Sarawak)
SE 404 Q (S for Sibu; E series; no. 404, Q for Sarawak)
L 123 for Lawas
6DE 55 Q (6D for 6th. Division, E series, no. 55, Q for Sarawak)
7DA 123 (7D for 7th. Division)
Note: Earlier registrations might not have the last letter Q.

NEW System:
(1st. letter is Q, 2nd. letter for town, 3rd. letter for series,
number (1 to 4))
Eg. QMA 7310 for Miri (A series; no. 7310)
QKF 3445 for Kuching (F series; no. 3445)
QMC 6360 for Miri (C series, no. 6360)
QSA 655 for Sibu
QTA 343 for Bintulu
QLA 123 for Lawas (?)

Brunei Darussalam (from observation only)
(1st. letter for town, 2nd. letter for series, no. (1 - 4) )
Eg: BA 1234 (B for Bandar Seri Begawan; A series; no. 1234)
KF 342 (K for Kuala Belait; F series; no. 342)
