At last I have a summer free, and am thinking of going to Baratsag. I live
in St. Louis. Is there transportation from San Francisco to Mendocino?

Recently I posted a question concerning the women's turns in Hungarian
dances and I received several replies privately. So that others might
also benefit, I quote a couple of contributions on the subject which
reflects the consensus:

"There is no way to get agreement on that topic because we have had
various sets of teachers who specifically taught a single dance from a
single village with and without heel spins. Specifically, Gabor and Mari
taught Magyarsanbenedicti at Sympo last summer and Mari clearly said the
woman's turns were heel spins. However, (Levi) Peter and (Kiss) Zsuzsi
taught the same dance from the same village several years ago and Peter
went on tirades as to how heel spins should not be done in that dance -
or in any dance, including Mezosegi! However, the 2 couples seem to get
on well and I noticed that Gabor was inviting Peter to teach.
If you watched the Hungarian State Ensemble's Sovati suite when they
toured in 94, the women were doing about 3 different kinds of heel spins,
so there is not consensus on how to do a heel spin either, but I decided
if that group does not feel that all women have to do them the same way,
I won't worry either. Virtually every woman teacher who has come to this
continent has taught heel spins slightly differently or even decided not
to use them, so each women dancer really has to make her own decisions as
to whom to follow. Some women use a different type of turn (stepping
over) for Magyarsovat in contrast to other Mezose'gi styles There are
also heated discussions as to whether one should bend one's knee's when
turning or not. The Zsurafsy trained teachers generally go for locked
knees, while most other Hungarian groups train dancers and teachers to
bend knees.

Most Hungarian women teachers do not teach heel spins for Kalotaszegi-
turns are either totally flat footed (heel on the floor) or weight on the
ball of the foot.

In terms of central Hungarian dances, Szatmari region turns seem to be
highest on the ball of the foot for the women. The problem in answering
this type of question is that, ever since ballet was invented, certain
folkdance directors, even in villages, get the urge to 'balletezize'
folkdances which usually includes encouraging the women to get up on
their toes to look more gracefull. This trend waxes and wanes (Moseyev,
Hungarian State Ensemble in the late 6Os), but has probably changed where
(on the foot) turns are done."

Rachel Schrier

"To answer your question about women's "heel turns" in Transylvanian
dances: No, they are not always heel- turns, just as nothing is
"always." The turns in the so-called "Kalotaszegi Invirtita" are not heel
turns. I recall a funny incident in a workshop on that dance when one
local teacher was amicably scolded for having taught the dance with
heel-turns.

The "heel-turn" is by no means universal, though it is a very efficient
means of spinning because it leaves the barest minimum of resistance for
the spin. I'm sure there are many other traditional dances in which it
isn't the preferred technique."

Greetings to John Uhlemann and other potential Barátság participants!

I noticed that John's query had to do with how people get from San
Francisco to the Mendocino Woodlands.

My wife, Ildikó, and I have the habit of taking a leisurely camping trip
down the Oregon Coast and through the redwood parks on our annual trips to
Barátság. But in some of the early 1980s, when I flew down, I was able to
arrange to carpool from San Francisco. Such arrangements depend, I
suspect, on how many folks are flying into SF versus how many natives are
setting out (and/or passing through) SF. Another possibility might be
carpooling in a rental car.

In 1982, the first year of Barátság, I managed to attend from up here in
the Northwest by hitchhiking, bussing and carpooling. You can see, I
guess, that I was doing it on a slender budget.

Barátság 1982 was one of the rare transforming experiences of my life. It
was worth all the hardships and uncertainties of the road to get there back
then, and I suspect that it will be worth the challenges of travel to the
Woodlands for anyone who gets there in 1999 as well.

The 1998 camp was one of the best I've experienced in 16 years of fierce
loyalty and enduring gratitude to the Barátság camp, its organizers, dance
teachers and musicians past and present. The line-up for 1999 will clearly
build on last year's special successes, adding as an area of emphasis the
Moldavian dancing which in past years has just made people go totally nuts
in the Woodlands!

Simply being in the Woodlands is a sublime experience! Spending a week in
the Woodlands, isolated in a small community of Hungarophiles, is a delight
no one should deny themselves. The social atmosphere, the evening
danicing, and even the food are _nowhere_ better. (We've been a lot of
places, so trust us!)

The directors of the camp will need to determine the financial viability of
the camp by the deadline of January 8th, according to their flyer and/or
their webpage at http://members.aol.com/baratsag/. Last year's camp,
despite its extraordinary success, was under-enrolled. That would mean
that Ildikó and I are mailing off our deposits today . . . and we are
counting on meeting you there!

Be good to yourselves! You deserve the Barátság experience as much as we do!

Wayne
