The bodies of a former Lebanese Forces member Michael Nassar and his wife,
Marie Noel Mimassi, who were murdered in Sao Paulo last Thursday, are
expected to arrive in Lebanon late this week, according to a family member.
"We were expecting them to arrive Monday, but their arrival was delayed by
their two daughters' passport preparations," said Grace Nassar, Michael's
sister-in-law.
The victims' daughters, Paloma, 6, and Michaela, 3, who are currently still
under the care of their mother's family in Brazil, are to be sent back to
Lebanon to live permanently with their paternal grandparents.
The burial will take place in Nassar's native Chouf village, Kfar Qatra.
Nassar said that investigations by Brazilian authorities had not led
anywhere and she has little faith that they will.
"They don't care," she said. "I don't think we will ever know who did it."
The couple were shot dead by masked assailants at a gas station while they
were waiting to repair a flat tire.
On whether the family suspects anyone in particular, Nassar said, "we don't
have a clue," but added that she was sure that the killings were not
motivated by theft.
Sources close to the Lebanese Forces told The Daily Star that fingers are
pointed toward people inside the disbanded party, particularly those close
to its former chief, Samir Geagea.
Geagea arrested Nassar in 1991 after the latter pocketed money belonging to
the militia.
"Geagea released Nassar only because his uncle, South Lebanese Army militia
Commander Antoine Lahd, intervened on his behalf," a source said.
Nassar's fortune is estimated at over $100 million. He is known to be a
major investor in Solidere, owning shares worth $25 million.
He also owns former President Camille Chamoun's palace in the Chouf and
lands in the South and on the coast.
