SHANGHAI, July 24 (Reuters) - A Shanghai newspaper blasted the Chinese
basketball team on Tuesday for its role in a bloody fist fight with Lebanon's
team at the Asian Basketball Championship in Shanghai as "disgraceful" and
"shameful."
Five Lebanese players were injured in the violent scuffle, which erupted
immediately after the Chinese hosts won 87-76 in a late Monday evening game in
the group stage of the 16-team tournament, witnesses said.
It is unclear what action will be taken by Chinese sports authorities, while
the Chinese team were not available for comment.
Most Chinese media refrained from casting blame on either side -- the Shanghai
Daily, for example, did not even mention the fight in its coverage of a game
played just 10 days after Beijing was awarded the 2008 Summer Olympics.
But the Shanghai Evening Post accused some of the Chinese team of
unsportsmanlike conduct.
"China's men basketballers, we still support you, but your behaviour last night
has made us feel ashamed and disappointed," the newspaper said in a front page
editorial.
"At the Olympics there's boxing, judo, tae-kwondo and even Chinese wushu, but
none of these events take place on the basketball court," it said.
"The behaviour of some yesterday was not up to Olympic spirit, because all
Olympic events are cultured."
The brawl started when Lebanon centre Joseph Vogel approached the Chinese bench
to shake the hand of Liu Yudong which was brushed away, witnesses said.
BENCHES EMPTIED
Vogel then aimed a kick in the direction of Liu's shin, after which Liu threw a
punch at Vogel. Benches on both sides emptied and the fight exploded, which
police broke up after a few minutes.
The Shanghai Evening Post said the Chinese team was forced to move later that
night to another hotel to avoid further unpleasantness with Lebanese players
staying at the same place.
Lebanese Basketball, has always been a Place of fistfights, just last month,
Sporting and Champville got into it real bad, it turned into an East Vs.
West Beirut conflict in the Ball game, the Army was sent on the floor, as
Champville beat Riyadi 3 - 0 in a best of five, semi final. Even LBC
announcers got attacked, and Referees (from the Sydney Olympic Games) waited
for the Army to be escorted out of the Game.
During the Game, I could hear the Crowds of sporting shamefully shouting
"Sika Sika, Il ouwet badna nika", "Bil dam bil rouh nafdika ya Bachar", cars
that dared have Champville or any Christian Symbols inside, were vandalised.
When the Army came in, the crowds started shouting "Ana Souri, Ana Souri".
I am sure the same thing Happens on both sides. But when the Army came in
during a Lebanese Syrian Brawl, in Jounieh's Kahraba Hall, the crowd shouted
"Tislam Ya 3askar libnan ya hami istiklalna".
Jsut the facts.

Would you or someone else please help me with the translations? What
do "Sika Sika, Il ouwet badna nika", "Bil dam bil rouh nafdika ya
Bachar," "Tislam Ya 3askar libnan ya hami istiklalna" mean?
TIA,
Cole

MY concern is that Lebanese sports on many occasions have been a center of
Fistfights and Chair throwing. It could be all due to a Post War syndrome.
