Honduras: Zelaya and Article 239

Constitutional assemblies are convened to write new constitutions. When
Zelaya published that decree to initiate an "opinion poll" about the
possibility of convening a national assembly, he contravened the
unchangeable articles of the Constitution that deal with the prohibition
of reelecting a president and of extending his term. His actions showed
intent.
Our Constitution takes such intent seriously. According to Article 239:
"No citizen who has already served as head of the Executive Branch can be
President or Vice-President. Whoever violates this law _or proposes its
reform_ [emphasis added], as well as those that support such violation
directly or indirectly, will immediately cease in their functions and will
be unable to hold any public office for a period of 10 years."

But the OAS, US and EU know better, right? it was a "military coup",
right? time to force Honduras, through penury, starvation or military
assault, to violate their own Constitution, right?

I see the UN General Assembly has voted to pressure Honduras to violate
its Constitution on behalf of Zelaya, now, too.
It's obviously "pile onto the little country" time for all the lying
hyenas around the world.
In the meantime, Zelaya is promising to punish the "coup-plotters" and
demanding "strong action" by the US to reinstate him . . . .

Ironically, I imagine that Article 239 was drafted with _right-wingers_ in
mind, Honduras at that time just coming out of a long period of
military dictatorship, and no-one at that time surely being able to
foresee Chavismo and Chavistas.

There are a lot of countries where voting is illegal and they are usually
run by tin pot dictators.
I think the people who best know how to run the place are the civilians
through voting, not a piece of fucking scrap paper with some scribbles on
it. The "constitution" is not the be all and end all.
