Vang Pao, against his traditional assessment of the situation, stated
his willingness to return to Laos with a peace offering. Accepting
this simple gesture and developing it to peaceful fruition might have
brought significant positive attention to Laos and formed the current
government’s credibility, far beyond the recognition available for
hosting one hundred public events like the Asian Games. Laos might
have been perceived as a nation ready to join the international
community. Instead, Lao Foreign Ministry's spokesman, Khenthong
Nuanthasing issued the following statement, “Vientiane government has
no intention to reconcile with him [Vang Pao]. If he comes to Laos
soon, he has to serve his death sentence that was ruled in absentia by
Lao People Court since the current regime took power in 1975."
There Is Always a Way
Laos may still seize the opportunity to bring closure to a war that
has been going on for far too long. Only by letting fear and suspicion
yield to commonsense may we obtain access to our mutually profitable
future.

trying to do it should have been done in private with all parties
involved and get agreements with all parties before it can come out in
the public. When it comes out in public all parties should have been
at the unvailing together. With the reactions of the Lao and Thai, it
seemed that neither parties (Thailand and Laos) were part of the
discussion of reconciliation with GVP. It seemed like the General
just thought "hey let's do a press release", it was done in haste to
say the least. My experience has taught me that if you want something
that important such as that to work out you do your behind the scene
work and get agreement with all parties before going to the press.
This seemed like it was done either by people who had no clue or done
for another purpose other than reconciliation.

group. LPDR should not turn down GVP offer so Laos will be peace in
