I bought a new laptop with Windows Vista. Yes, I can read Lao without
installing the Lao fonts but I wonder how I can write in Lao in either
Microsoft Word or in this forum. Also, the Lao characters appear not
properly aligned. Any help will be highly appreciated.

This is how I set the Lao keyboard to work with Vista. I use Vista
Home Premium version. I don't know if this is the same with all
versions of Vista or not so don't take what I about to say literally.

>From Control Panel windows click on "Regional and Language Options"

and Regional and Language Options window will show. Click on
"Keyboards and Languages" tab then click on "Change keyboards..."
button. The "Text Services and Input Languages" window will show.
Click on "General" tab then click on "Add" button. The "Add Input
Language" window will show up. Scroll down the list to Lao section
then check to expand "Lao (LPDR)" item then check "Lao" and "US"
checkboxs then click "OK" button to finish.
On the Text Services and Input Languages window click on the "Advance
Key Settings" you will see a list of a group of Hot keys for input
languages. Hilight "To Lao (Lao PDR) - Lao" item then click on the
"Change Key Sequence..." button. A "Change Key Sequence" window pops
up. Check the Enable Key Sequence checkbox. You now have option to
change how you will toggle US keyboard to Lao keyboard. I chose Ctrl
+
1 to be my US to Lao keyboard. Click OK button to close the window.
Click on "Appply" button. You are done!

I tested my keyboard mapping with Office 2007 and Wordpad. They work
the same. To toggle to Lao keyboard I pick DokChampa font, using
Wordpad, and typed couple text in English then I pressed my toggle
keys that I set up (Ctrl + 1) to switch to Lao font. I typed
something
and Lao scripts did show up. Easy enough.

BTW, I also set my key to toggle back to US keyboard using Ctrl + 0.

In my humble opinion, DokChampa is looking decent on Vista. I like to
see prettier Lao typefaces but this one will do. Still the Lao
keyboard layout is nothing to be written home about. If I have to
design my own Lao keyboard layout it will be more intuitive and
easier
to use than this "official" one.
