What does the word 'sahai' mean?
I've got a recent vientiane newspaper, the headlines still show the
same or similar news as they flood lao newspapers during late 70's,
something like, "Sahai Pathan khamtay TonHab PhooThairn Viet...(Sahai
president khamtay received Vietnamese delegation in Vientiane) "...
Every news on the front page of lao newspapers must have news about
vietnamese appeared every day, every month, every years, no exception.
I wonder why people still call their rich leader, high ranking
dictators as sahai to this day? Is he really Sahai, Siao or friend of
lao people? Can anybody calls him sahai too? or it just reserved for
the ones of the same kind, omong the sahai only? How come he can be
Sahai and Pathan at the same time?
Why the commu leaders keep lying lao people for 30 + 27 years that
they are sahai of the people? In fact, they live high above people's
head. Look at their mansions, big houses, deluxe cars, tons of $$$...
What a shame to pretending to be people friend or Sahai!
The commu world collapsed long time ago, it's about time to get rid of
this garbage regime and live in the real world. It's about time to
stop lying. Sahai and president can't mixed in real live. Stop lying,
stop commu regime, then we all lao people can help each other build
and rebuild our beloved country in a right way, the more civilized
way, the free and democratic way, which is our lao way of live since
time immemorial.
commu regime goes to hell.

MY UNDERSTANDING IS THIS, WHEN AI-NONG TOOK OVER IN 1975, EVERYONE
SHOULD BE TREATED EQUALLY; NO JAO-NAI; EVERYONE IS SUPOSED TO BE
"SAHAI" TO ONE ANOTHER. BUT THE PLAN DIDN'T WORK. THEY STILL LIKE TO
USE/WANT TO USE THE PROPER TITLE TO DISTINQUISH THEIR RANKS. I'M SURE
I CAN'T CALL PRIMIER KHAMTAY "SAHAI". SO, IT WAS A JOKE RIGHT FROM THE
BEGINNING. BUT I BELIEVE IT'S USED WITHIN THEIR CIRCLE.

commu go to heaven!
Sahai means "Man!" to me in my lao language. Hey man! in english or
Hey Sahai! in lao. It is a word use between a friend and an enermy in
the commy pathet lao. They use to express somebody either you're their
friend or enermy. This means "When pathet lao people call you Sahai
they mean they can either kill you or save you whatever they want.
Watch out when you are in laos and some guys come to you and call you
Sahai instead of Ai or Nong. You might get robbed.
Dear Sahai Paslimyeeb,
"Sahai" means "friend" in a good and a proper manner--defined by both
possess an equal social/economic/ability/education status--eventhough
some may have used it sarcastically to degrading people as to what
happens with the word "Siaow" used by the Ayudhayans or Siamese to
call the Isaan/Lao people.
Discrimination and bias based on one's own ethnicity, culture, race,
social and economic status,,,,blah blah blah is nothing new. It exists
since the beginning of time for it is one of the traits born to every
human being. The logic behind this is people are craving for their own
"self-identity." Just take a look at the Augusta Golf Club membered by
the Old White Boys who happened to be CEO of corporations and
financial institutions and these old geezers refused to accept women,
many of whom belong to the same race as they are, as their members. Do
they have the right to do so? Of course they have the absolute right
and it is even quaranteed by the constitution. On the other hand,
social activists argued that if these old geezers used the public
money (i.e., the membership dues, luncheons & dinners and other
activities have all been claimed as their business reduction in their
income tax return) and public resources (their main event--the
Master-was televised using the public airwave) to make money and to
further their business they indeed have no right to deny the right of
women who happened to be the majority of this country and they do pay
taxes to support these old geezers.

I have never heard of the term "Sahai" been used to degrade the Hmong
people. However, I heard a lot of the term "por siaow" and "mae siaow"
instead. But, the term and the meaning in its self is not degrading
unless it's intended to use in such way, otherwise it's quite normal to
use it among friend.
Sri
Never cheer the Communist victory. You've just killed one of
Democratic Lao's souls.

The word and meaning is so meaninful but practically those com leaders
are as same as animal farms: if you ever watched the movie "ANIMAL
FARM" then this movie is the best example of communist leaders.
