Hello all SCL (who...many foot in Laos) folks, I am doing a research
on the subject of "Owning a Cellular phone in Laos" I want to know how
much a decent Cell phone cost in US$. and KIP, and how much the
monthly connection cost in US$. and KIP? Who, what is the Cell phone
company (carrier) they have ? What DO and Don't when someone owning a
cell phone in Laos?

Your kindly response and advice is appreciated.

Vimlicas,

Only one company, Laotelecom, the cost of the phone would depend on
what model you want ranging from approximately $35 - $200+.

Basic service is around $15 - $20 a month. There are two types of
cell phones, one with card that you have to replace once the card is
used up and the other is by monthly fees.

Can I assume that you're looking to buy a phone for someone? If
that's the case then shop around, some people go to Nongkhai or Udon
Thani to purchase their phone there and then get a number (sim card)
for it in Laos. Don't buy the one from the states for them, it has to
be tune into Lao or Thailand I believe, don't know much about it, but
in Laos they it had to be "Joon", and I think that word came from
'tuning'. Hope this will help!

Rgds,
Joe

PS. The easiest exchange rate to use is 10,000 Kip = $1 USD, that
should give you a good ball park figure.

Joe,
It was my understanding that there were now three cell phone
companies in Laos (Laotel and 2 Thai competitors). There were
previously two and in the last year a third was given approval.
Straighten me out if I am wrong or possibly the three are
operating in different areas of the country.

Hey! Whois come back.... tell me more this is very interseting to me.
You mean if when I am in Thailand I can just buy a SIM card replace
the one in my phone then I can simply use my phone as a local cell
phone in Thailand or Laos, is that what you mean?

Vimlicas,
Be very cautious. The last word that I ever heard was that
any cell phone from outside of Laos would not work inside of Laos
(other than those signals from Thailand that could be received in
the border areas). I know that was true several years ago and it
may have changed by now. Just be cautious and confirm anything
that would have you spending money that doesn't involve something
directly through the service providers in Laos.

This is not quite true. You can buy a SIM card easily in Laos and use
it in your existing mobile phone, as long as it is a GSM phone (the
standard phone in Europe and Asia, but NOT the type used in USA). The
same goes for Thailand, where they are a little cheaper, BUT as the
previous posting says, the Thai networks are not very useful in
Vientianne (weak reception unless you are directly by the river), and
probably no use at all elsewhere in Laos. When you buy the SIM card -
from any mobile phone shop or from a phone stall in the Morning
Market, ask for a 'Number'. Asking for a Sim card may not be
understood. In BKK lots of stalls in Siam Centre sell the cards, all
same price but the Thai seem very interested in the exact number to be
allocated so the long lists displayed show what number you are
choosing (I was indifferent to this but puzzled at what was going on).
This is the best way to get mobile in Thai or Laos. As far as I
remember the SIM card was about $15 (Nov 03) of which about half was
call value (cant be sure of that amount though). There did not seem to
be room for much bargaining, I think they are a standard price. Call
charges are modest. Top up cards from same shops.
Any unused value on the card will not be useful anywhere else in the
world (ditto the Thai card) so rememebr to give the card to a friend
before you leave.

It's easy and cheap to get and use mobile phone in Laos, you can get
first hand, second hand, Europe made, Chinese made and so on. Price
may start from $50 to a few hundreds depeding on what you want to do
with it.I use siemens which costs $80, clear voice, reliable, reach any
body i want (of cause no camera). there are about 3 main service
providers in Laos (Lao telecom, ETL, and another one people know as
Tango).

You can get SIM card for different prices from different companies, as
of to day, you can get as cheap as $5 for a SIM card and with this you
get $2
call value for free and with a T-SHIRT from Tango (it nearly seems
that the SIM card cost $0). Another companies sales SIM cards from $5
up to $25. Mobile phones from most of Asian countries can be used in
Laos ( not sure about hose from the US), you just need to insert Lao
SIM card.Call charge is also quite affordable and so far I nearly
don't know any body in my surounding who does not use a mobile
phone. In the reagion, the cheapest mobile phones are in Cambodia, even
cheaper than in Thailand.

People Do make calls up to their ability to pay, and most men turn the
phones off when with their wife fearing their young girlfriends will
give them a call.
Other than that, no restriction.

Hey borntokill,

you said "born to kill meo only"? man you're sick. meo or non-meo are
human and each group have good and bad people. you're in a non-meo
group but you're in the worse category in according to your attitude.
cool down man, why hate? nothing gain from of being enemy, in the
other hand you'll gain a lot more benefits from of being friends.
think about it my friend!
