Biography of General NOSAVAN Phoumi.
From the family of the siamese governor ruling the now Savannakhet province
and Mukdahan, he was secretary of the french police (sureté) at the WWII.
Member of the organization Lao Pen Lao, he participated to the formation of
the Lao Itsala South Committee and became the chief of Souphanouvong's
headquarter, job that he continued to work during the exile at Bangkok
(1946-1949). Then he followed Souphanouvong in the North VietNam; but
disappointed by the nomination of Nouhak Phoumsavanh as chief of the Lao
Itsala troops, he joined the lao royal army. He was "lieutenant" in 1950,
then commanded the military region of Vientiane in 1956. Invited by France
in 1957 to study at the military school of Saint Cyr, he refused and
prefered the American, like his uncle, the marshal Sarit Thanarat dictator
of Thailand. He founded the Party " Khana kammakan pong kan phon pa nhot
khong xat " (Committee of national interest defense) in 1958 then the " Phak
Pasasangkhom " (socialist popular Party) majority to the parliament after
the faked votingof May 1960. Minister of defense at the time of the coup
d'etat of Kong Lč, he organized the " committee against coup d'etat " helped
by the United States and Thailand. Dethroned in 1965 by the coup d'etat of
the general Kouprasith Abbhay, he escaped in Thailand and is condemned by
default to 20 years of jail. In 1981, he created with Inpeng Souryadhay the
united Front of national liberation. Dead in Thailand (1985).

To many, he was a traitor, a puppet of Sarit who want to bring laos
under siamese ambition of uniting the tai groups to one nation,
thailand, the grandiose plan of Por (Plaek) Phibounsongkram. The joke
was that anyone (royal gvt or lao issara force) can kill him if he was
sighted on laos soil as long as he/she can prove that he was phoumy
norsavanh, no jail for the shooter. He eventually succeeded on living
and dying in siam soil, but only for himself and his family. That was
his karma.

The Nosavans were no siamese.
Some Nosavan younsters are still living in thailand but keep their
nationality lao.
Sarit tanarat, former thai PM, was half lao. Sarit's lao mother was
related to the Nosavans of Savannakhet.

sabaidi thongvan,
the older son of phoumi was my friend, at "petit lycée". some years in the
past, he had said in the thai newspaper that he had nothing to do with lao
because he is now thailander.

One of his sons is a singer (Thai songs, of course). Dr. Souk, what
about General Ma? Do you know about him?

Ai ລາວເກົ່າ,

Are asking about BrigGen Thao Ma of the Royal Lao Air Force? According
to the book that I just started reading, he led LRAF in October's coup
attempt in Vientiane. I don't have anything to contribute to this
discussion, but I am lurking in here trying to learn more about the
history of Laos.

Why isn't Vientiane spelled Viengjun or ViengChanh?
