What Does the Word "Meo" Mean?

pardon me. i did not intend to call people name, but as long as i can
remember, people always call them meo. they do in china, thailand,
laos, vietnam, and elsewhere. i truly don't know what it means. but if
said it, would i be guilty of uttering a racial slur without truly
knowing the nuture of this crime? i think not.

i think laos always have the respect for this ethnic group. even the
second laos president Keson was born from a meo mother and viet dad.

Kayson's background. Legend, Kaysone's father really a Viet like the
original poster said? I've heard about that but I'm not sure, would

you should too! your pretension of not knowing what the word "meo" mean
is clearly a show of your shortcomings. In your opening statement,
you've mentioned that your intention is not to call racial name. This

racial backgrounds coming from all over the world. You must get lost
everyday here because where ever you go you see plenty of people of
colors.

For you, Mr. Kaysone, who was half-Lao, should not considered a Lao
citizen, right? And the Hmong, who have lived for at least five
generations in Laos, should not be recognized and accepted as a
national of Laos, either, right? The Hmong had fought with both sides
during the "Independence war" and the CIA "Secret war in Laos"; they
had made history in Laos for their contributions, and you want to keep
calling them with your racial discrimination word "Meo", instead of the
word Hmong?

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, the word "Miao" which is known
as "Meo" is originated from China and it refers to all tribal
minorities in China. It's not the identity of the Hmong; Hmong in
China, Vietnam, Laos, and the rest of the world always called ourselves
Hmong. If you wish to call Hmong otherwise, a wise choice would be
"Chao Khao" or "Sao Phao Noy" like the Thai's called their Hmong
compatriots. You may call me a "hill billy" or "Montagnard" when you
could identify me with the silky baggy black pants with a long red
clothed belt tied around my waist, silver braces around my arms and
ankles, and necklaces on my neck, and a shirt half quilted that covered
just above the belly botton carrying a muzzle loader or a knife with
buffalo horn handle in its sharp point jacket. I will know you're a
Thai, Lao Lum, etc. when I can identify you doing the "Mo lam" "Oh! La
No! Oh! La Na!" And, we all shall live harmonously under one roof.

My point is, now that you know who the Hmong are; you may call us
anything but "Meo." I have seen many crazy Hmong out there waiting to
seize an opportunity.

Wow Charlies, my ball just shrunk. Pardon my input on this matter. What
I've witnessed or heard while I was in Laos was that Lao people call
Hmong as Lao Sung. I've never heard they call Lao Sung as Hmong. I
don't think they know the term "Hmong". They only know two term Lao
Sung, or Meo which you consider is a derogatory term. I don't
personally know what terms you prefer us Lao to call you folks. I'll
stick with Lao Sung. Evidence shown in Vang Vieng where there are three
ethnicities living harmiously as one. Well, at least from my observaton
on my recent trip to Laos. They have Lao Lum, Lao Sung, and Lao Theung
working at the post office in Vang Vieng. And while eating "Kao Piik"
in the morning, I couldn't tell who's who until one speak their
respective tongue that I know that person's ethnicity. As long as
everyone in Lao can speak the maine dialect "Lao", I think we'll be
able to communicate and understand each other better. I guess Lao Sung
call Lao people like Pau Siew, Mere Siew. I was called Pau Siew by an
old Lao Sung lady too. That fell kinda awkward, but was ok by me.

I asked the "meo" question on laotianinfo and got a lot of hassle for
my ignorance.
So I try to stay from any topics related to it from there on.

Some of you may know me as oudie and be familiar with my site laohub.
I just learned that there is a taiwaneses webmaster with the same name

I thought they mostly speak in Mandarin and other dialects but in
smaller number. I do think Hong Kongnese and Macau people speak mostly
Cantonese. The famous Chinese/American singer, Coco Lee, speak mostly
Cantonese and I think she know now some or fluent in Mandarin.

Oudie, Taiwanese have different dialect from Cantonese. I used to have
a Taiwanese friends when I was in high school, they have their own
Taiwanese dialect and at the same time, they're fluent in Mandarin. As
far as Cantonese closer to Pasa Lao, I've to agree with you on some
extent like numbers 7,8, 10...like ten in Lao is Sip, in Cantonese,
they call it Sup.....they also call chicken the same as we do like
"gai". and also chair. Well, I guess there are more...

What is the answer? The answer was, Meos are fine. I was called Meo
when I was young. Going to school, my teacher dis called , my friends,
gals, and so the entire neighbours. This Meo kid beaten alot of lao
kids, from fun and game with alot of lao friends. That was then. What
ticked off, once we are in the America, the sweetest word of Meo is
gone. The word Ai Hmong, where are you from? Pousao started getting
on my legs, age at 18. Gee .....Bottom line is, pousao Lao, smells so
good you are the only gook, that have not accomplished any thing in
your life and waiting to spend on other expenses. After all, you are
still the uglist mother fucker of all.

General Vang Pao,who is also powerful at that time,know these two people

You're talking about Meo Namthar right? Go ask les anciant etudiants
d'internat du Lycee de VT from 1964-74. First they saw the Hmong
students ate rice soaked in the water and they laughed, but later it
became popular, laoloum students couldn't wait till lunch time to join
and joy Meo kabkhaonamthar. I think Soulivong or Thanouxay still
remember those days.

Don't make me yell at your ears next time. Dr. Souk and laophuan did
learn a dear lesson from me.
