i was browsing through the byerly's website. they're supposed to be a
swanky/upscale grocery store. they listed kalbi as a korean teriyaki.
i'm in minnesota right now (twin cities), and i'm seriously
considering going to a different store for fruit (they have good fruit
there).
i got upset by this and i e-mailed saying that i had to protest this. i
got to speak with their "head chef" (i'm not sure what that means) on
the phone.
my argument was that kalbi is a marinade, not really a teriyaki. even
in japan they call kalbi korean bbq (something to be noted, i believe).
he felt that he was in the right. his proof was "korean friends in
california" who told him so.
i still don't like it being called teriyaki. i'm not even sure why!
i'm vegetarian and no longer eat it, so it's even more ironic. end of
the story is i doubt that they'll change the description. the cynic in
me says that i should be thankful that they even used the word kalbi and
included korea in the description.
any comments?

: We eat lots of korean and Japanese food here. Teriyaki has a different
: flavor then Kalbi marinade. Teriyaki is sweet in flavor versus Kalbi,
: which is a sesame/ Shoyu(soy sauce) flavor. I make Kalbi all the time
: and rather use Kalbi marinade on all my meats then Teriyaki.
Got agree with you here...kalbi is some much better than teriyaki
(particularly when that teri sauce gets all over my plate lunch...way too
sweet)
: Am I right? The flavor is totally different from each other. That is
: my opinion.
Yes...you are right. They are totally different (and Kalbi and bulgogi are
much better!)

: How about we all swamp their e-mail site with e-mail petitions.

well, not quite what i was looking for.
my sister (mrs "foodtv") herself was pretty appalled when told about
this. i'm considering a letter. on stationery! muhahaha.
(oh, and sorry about the repost of boram's posting, my env settings were
weird)
any chef who thinks that kalbi marinade and teriyaki marinade is the
same has a shitty restaurant, so it will just end up nowhere soon
enough.
teriyaki is just soy sauce, sugar, some vinegar and maybe pepper. i
think they add corn starch to make it stick to the meat as a glaze. in
fact i'm not sure that it's a marinade at all.
kalbi on the other hand is a true marinade, and has soy sauce, sugar,
grated onion, garlic, shallots, pepper, and sesame oil.
geez...now i'm getting hungry...
