Well there's a socioeconomic component as well. Just as 'only the rich
can afford to look poor', rap and blacks can be cachet in some upper
middle class+ circles when deployed correctly, provided that you're
under 20 (shows you btw an expiry date of a lower IQ), much like grunge
fashion. And from that socioeconomic point of view, blue collar whites
probably more seldom listen to rap (due probably to their racial
experiences) when they're not repelled by it, while they gravitate
towards heavy metal which is more or less an exclusively white phenomenon.
There are times when this cachet goes too far though. One example being
in the official government-sponsored "Korea Sparkling" campaign a few
years ago when one reason cited why it was so good to visit Korea was
that it's got the best b-boys on the planet.
Hmmmm.
Now maybe Korea is too comfortably ensconced in its peninsula to
understand the lurid real-life details.
It still didn't sound right (let alone cool) except to the most
uninitiated.
