My name is So Yong Park, and I am a member of the Korean Art Committee of the
Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. We are currently holding a membership drive
in conjunction withan upcoming pojagi exhibition. The following is a
description of the KoreanArt Committee, the Korean Art Department, the coming
pojagi exhibition, and the membership form for those who are interested
in becoming members.
KOREAN ART DEPARTMENT:
The Korean Art Department was established in 1989 with the appointment of
Dr. Kumja Paik Kim as curator of Korean Art. The Korean Art Department of the
Asian Art Museum is the only museum with a dedicated gallery and curator in the
Western world. Since its inception, the Korean Art Department has added 140
objects to its collection, boasting the most beautiful Korean Art collection
outside of Korea. It sponsors many Korean Art related programs including
lectures, a film festival, picnics, the Chu’sok Gala and a lecture/performance
series. Many exciting events are being planned for the coming year.
THE KOREAN ART COMMITTEE:
Was established in 1989 to support the activities of the Korean Art Department
of the Asian Art Museum. Recent contributions by Mr. Chong Moon Lee
of Diamond Computers, the Koret Foundation, and the Korea Foundation
has ensured the continuation of the Korean Art Department and the curatorship
of Korean Art at the museum.
The department is at a critical juncture at this time. A recent bond measure
in San Francisco approved approximately $40 million dollars to convert the old
main library into a new home for the Asian Art Museum, currently housed adjacent
to the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. Of great cencern for the Korean Art
Committee is to establish a viable body of those interested in Korean Art,
especially among the greater Korean American community, actively particpating
in general museum functions and Korean Art specific activities. Your membership
in the Korean Art Committee will assure the continued growth of the department
and assure the Korean collection favorable exhibit space in the upcoming move
to the new museum space in 1997.
POJAGI: KOREAN WRAPPING CLOTHS OF THE CHOSON DYNASTY
The upcoming pojagi exhibit will showcase nine period costumes
and 54 pojagi or wrapping cloths. Pojagi served a variety of purposes,
from wrapping ordinary objects or covering food tables to wrapping sacred
texts and draping Confucian or Buddhist altars, exemplifying creative talents
of the women of the Choson Dynasty.
