Kashmir heading for white revolution

SRINAGAR JUNE 4. Despite the turmoil caused by militancy, Kashmir is
heading for a white revolution with the milk production crossing 6.50
lakh metric tonnes generating an income of Rs 650 crores annually.

Milk production in the Valley registered a three-fold increase during
the last six years with the production swelling to 6.50 lakh metric
tonnes last year from 3.69 lakh metric tonnes in 1995-96.

Pulwama district, known as the ``Anand of Kashmir'' alone supplies
over
two lakh litres of milk, Budgam one lakh litre and Baramulla 60,000
litres to Srinagar city daily, he said.

The increase in the milk production has been made possible with the
convertibility of 56 per cent local livestock into cross-bred variety.

Following introduction of frozen semen technology and artificial
insemination, birth of 2.63 lakh cross-bred calves, valued at Rs 105
crores was registered in the Valley during the past six years, he
said.

With the increase in production, the per capita availability has
surpassed the national and the recommended average, he said. Against
the
ICMR recommendations of 280 ml per person per day, the per capita
availability in the valley is 325 ml.

He said four pasteurised plants are currently functional in the
private
sector in the Valley. --PTI
