The war in Gaza – a vicious folly of a bankrupt government
Bloodshed and suffering on both sides of the border could have been avoided
It is possible to return immediately to the ceasefire, make it stronger
and firmer
The war in Gaza, the bloodshed, killing, destruction and suffering on
both sides of the border are the vicious folly of a bankrupt government.
A government which let itself be dragged by adventurous officers and
cheap nationalist demagoguery, dragged into a destructive and
unnecessary war which will bring no solution to any problem – neither to
the communities of southern Israel under the rain of missiles nor to the
terrible poverty and suffering of besieged Gaza. On the day after the
war the same problems will remain – with the addition of many bereaved
families, wounded people crippled for life, and piles of rubble and
destruction.
The escalation towards war could and should have been avoided. It was
the State of Israel which broke the truce, in the 'ticking tunnel' raid
on the night of the US elections two months ago. Since then the army
went on stoking the fires of escalation with calculated raids and
killings, whenever the shooting of missiles on Israel decreased.
The cycle of bloodshed could and should be broken. The ceasefire can be
restored immediately, and on firmer foundations. It is the right of
Israel to demand a complete end to shooting on its territory and
citizens – but it must stop all attacks from its side, end completely
the siege and starvation of Gaza's million and half inhabitants, and
stop interfering with the Palestinians' right to choose their own leaders.
Ehud Barak's declaration that he is stopping the elections campaign in
order to concentrate on the Gaza offensive is a joke. The war in Gaza is
itself Barak's elections campaign, a cynical attempt to buy votes with
the blood and suffering in Netivot and Sderot, Gaza and Beit Hanun. Also
so-called peace seekers such as Amos Oz s who give this offensive their
support and encouragement could not afterwards shrug off responsibility.

mentioned it a couple of days ago and was howled down by the usual hooked

Dear Peace Activist,
The news about the attacks in Gaza is beyond words. "Appalling" doesn't
even come close.
U.S.-supplied Israeli F-16 warplanes and Apache helicopters have fired
missiles and dropped over 100 tons of bombs on dozens of locations in
the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip. Over 300 people are dead and at least
1,400 more are injured. Many if not most of them are civilians. Food and
medicine were already in short supply in Gaza and all medical facilities
have been completely overwhelmed by this onslaught. Access to Gaza has
been cut off by Israel.
This is the most violent and heartbreaking situation that has happened
to the Palestinians in recent history, and it must stop. In addition to
calling for protests at Israeli consulates and federal buildings, as
well as letters to the U.S. and Israeli governments, Jewish Voice for
Peace staff and members are already putting together an aggressive
campaign focused on Gaza. And, without a moment to waste, we call for an
immediate end to attacks on all civilians.
I am Stephanie Roth and I've been an activist with Jewish Voice for
Peace for many years, including serving on the board of directors. I've
been involved with social justice issues my entire adult life - both in
my professional life as an editor and fundraiser, and as a volunteer and
activist. There is no issue I find more important or compelling than my
work to end the Israeli Occupation. I am particularly saddened by this
weekend's tragedy, occurring just a week after the uplifting days when
the Shministim - the young Israeli conscientious objectors - caught the
world's attention with their courage to say no to violence on December
18. I know that people in Gaza will stop dying when Israeli soldiers,
like the Shministim, have the courage to say NO. NO, we will not target
civilians; NO, we will not follow immoral orders; NO, we will not
contribute to the destruction of Palestinian society.
Together with the Shministim, and with the 1,000 Israelis in Tel Aviv
and thousands of others around the world who have already come out to
protest the Gaza onslaught, we say YES. YES, stepping up to speak for
justice and peace makes a difference; YES, we stand with the people of
Gaza, of the West Bank, of Sderot in Israel and the innocent civilians
everywhere whose lives are destroyed by cynical politicians and
warmakers; YES, our voices together are stronger than the voice of any
one of us alone; and YES, we are committed to the longterm goal of
ending the Occupation and working for justice, peace and life.
Jewish Voice for Peace's goal - MY goal - of ending the Occupation is a
long-term one. Today, I will be giving the biggest gift I can to insure
that they have the resources for a swift and sustained response to this
most recent atrocity.
We are in this struggle for as long as it takes, and we need your help.

Who is Mr. Johndroe talking as spokesman for U.S. Policy,
making nitwit remarks about overwhelming force in effect, cold-
bloodied murder from the air, is justified. How does a secular country
get away with murdering in cold-blood in a theocratic part of the
world?.
Terrorism from a rocket or two from Hamas in Palestine
doesn't justify killing in cold-blood, from the air, all the cadets at
a police academy.. Overwhelming force justifies! Mr Johndroe and the
other Zionists on The Lehrer newshour last night including the female
Rubin. Force of argument is more convincing for a people who want
peace rather than force of arms. Everyone can respect what the Chinese
spokesman said even though I was thinking about the Nepalesse Buddhist
statues being destroyed by Chinese military as he spoke. At least he
was speaking from a commom humanity. Everyone in the world except
secular jews and Zionists believe the punishment should fit the crime.
That's the problem with labeling people the enemy. In lieu of
diplomacy.
We keep hearing in the United States Hamas is a terrorist
organization. So is the JADL according to the Federal Bureau of
Investigation.

And this last is *exactly* why the Palestinian casualty toll is as
disproportionately high as it is. The izzies do indeed want a renewed
cease-fire with Hamas, but they want on terms more pleasing to
themselves. And for the izzies, a few hundred Palestinian lives is of no
consequence.
