Talmud teacher convicted of sodomy
Teacher abuses mentally ill children, family members; judges criticize local
authorities

JERUSALEM - The Jerusalem District Court sentenced a 37-year-old Talmud
(Oral Law) teacher of mentally challenged students to a 12 year prison term
Wednesday for acts of sodomy and sexual misconduct involving teens and
children.
The teacher, who is currently divorced without children, mainly molested
family members, including his nephew, who was 10-years-old at the time.
Investigators found dozens of naked photos of children on his personal
computer.
The teacher, who grew up in New York, arrived in Israel to study in a
Yeshiva; he later returned to the U.S. to complete his degree in Computer
Science, but came back to Israel to teach children with learning
disabilities and serve as a boarding school counselor.
The teacher told welfare services that a summer camp instructor had sexually
assaulted him when he was 11 years-old.
The judges criticized the teacher's relatives for not taking action even
though they were aware of some of his problems after he had discussed them
with his parents.
The judges also criticized the authorities.
"Today, the state is not sufficiently prepared to deal with sex offenders,
and this harms both the public and the accused," they said in the ruling.
"An extended sentence is not enough to deal with and rehabilitate sex
offenders, and especially sick pedophiles, who in some cases are not even
aware that what they are doing is wrong."

Despite at least 500 complaints of child sex abuse at Pakistani Muslim
schools this year there has yet to be one successful prosecution.
Aamer Liaquat Hussain, a minister in the nation's religious affairs
department, is facing death threats and denunciations from Islamic
clerics for his insistence that Pakistan confront the sex abuse at its
"madrassas," the BBC reported Friday.
There are about 10,000 madrassas in Pakistan.
This year's 500 complaints compares with last year's 2,000, Hussain
said, but still no one has been convicted in any of those 500 cases.
He praised the Federation of Madrassas for its willingness to
investigate the problem, which he said was besmirching Islam's good
name.
Hussain also rejected demands from some Islamic politicians that he
apologize for discussing the situation, saying he himself experienced
attempted abuse at a school when he was 8.

No religion is immune to this.
Here in Australia, sex abuse is associated with Anglican (Episcoplian to the
Americans ) churches and institutions.
At least one Anglican bishop has been sacked for covering up sex abuse
cases and denying victims justice.
The Marist Brothers ( a Catholic organisation ) have a bad record too.
Sex abuse is supposed to have been wide spread in Buddhist monasteries in
Tibet. The original poster's message alluded to abuse in Jewish
institutions.
Pedophile are presumably attracted to organisations where they can come into
contact with children.
Blaming individual religions or sects simply hides the problem.
The solution is :
1. better screening for pedophiles
2. education of non-pedophiles to monitor and report incidents to the police
3. close monitoring of children
4. providing safe and confidential and effective reporting systems to children.

There are some cultures where marrying and presumably having sex with
young girls is normal, are these men actually pedophiles? If not what
are the guidelines to distinguish culturally condoned child abuse and
in cultures where it is rightly a serious crime?

Those who prey on vulnerable girls are probably not "queers".

cases above, the girls are young (and underage according to many
Western countries) but generally not pre-pubescent.
The age of consent is dropping as children mature earlier. In Spain,
