Pope slams rise of anti-Semitism

COLOGNE, Germany -- Pope Benedict XVI, on a visit yesterday to a
synagogue once demolished by the Nazis, condemned Nazi ideology and
counseled vigilance against increasing racism in the world.
"In the darkest period of German and European history, an insane
racist ideology born of neo-paganism gave rise to the attempt to
exterminate European Jewry," the pope said at Roonstrasse Synagogue,
razed in the Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938 and rebuilt in 1959.
"Today, sadly, we are witnessing the rise of new signs of
anti-Semitism and various forms of a general hostility toward
foreigners. We must without fail awaken our conscience."
Reaching out to Protestants, Jews and Muslims is a major theme of
Benedict's visit to the six-day festival known as World Youth Day, a
convention of prayer and music that has brought more than 400,000 young
pilgrims from nearly 200 countries.
The pope, on the second day of his first international visit,
became the first head of the Catholic Church to visit a German
synagogue.
His predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who died in April, was the
first pontiff to visit a synagogue, in Rome, in 1986.
Yesterday's visit was especially significant for Benedict, 78, a
German, who was forced into the Hitler Youth as a teenager and later
drafted into the German army. He underwent training before deserting
close to the war's end.
Stopping to pray before a memorial to the Holocaust, in which the
Nazis killed 6 million Jews, he said that people have a duty to
remember the "terrible events" of 60 years ago.
Benedict also promised to continue to reach out to the Jewish
community.
"Today I, too, wish to reaffirm that I intend to continue on the
path toward improved relations and friendship with the Jewish people,
following the decisive lead of John Paul II," Benedict said.
"There has been progress, but much more remains to be done."
Benedict, as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, worked behind the scenes to
create the framework for his predecessor's outreach initiatives that
included restored relations between the Vatican and Israel.
He said Catholics and Jews have a "complex" and often painful
history. He added that both communities need to work together on common
goals.
"This dialogue, if it is to be sincere, must not gloss over or
underestimate the existing differences," he said. "We need to show
respect for one another, and to love one another."
One difference, evoked yesterday by synagogue board member Abraham
Lehrer, is over Vatican archives dealing with World War II.
Mr. Lehrer told Benedict that he has a duty to open the files, to
settle the question as to whether Pope Pius XII knew about the
Holocaust.
Benedict did not directly address the issue except to say that the
communities need to "arrive at a shared interpretation of disputed
historical questions."
Cologne's Jewish community is one of the oldest in Europe. It
numbers about 5,000.

Why You Should Not Believe In Jesus

In the wake of Mel Gibson’s phenomenally successful film and the
production company’s ambitious plans to market the film worldwide to
“the faithless,” taking advantage of what is perhaps “the best Christian
outreach opportunity in 2,000 years,” it is important for people to
understand why they should not “believe” in Jesus.
The purpose is not to disparage other religions, but rather to clarify
the position set forth in God’s SOURCE DOCUMENT?Torah.
One should not accept Jesus as the messiah because:
1) Jesus did not fulfill the messianic prophecies.
2) Jesus did not embody the personal qualifications of the Messiah.
3) Biblical verses “referring” to Jesus are mistranslations.
4) Jewish knowledge is based on national revelation.
But first, some background: What exactly is the Messiah?
The word “Messiah” is an English rendering of the Hebrew word
“Mashiach,” which means “Anointed.” It usually refers to a person
initiated into God’s service by being anointed with oil. (Exodus 29:7, I
Kings 1:39, II Kings 9:3)
Since every King and High Priest was anointed with oil, each may be
referred to as “an anointed one” (a Mashiach or a Messiah). For example:
“God forbid that I [David] should stretch out my hand against the Lord’s
Messiah [Saul]...” (I Samuel 26:11. Cf. II Samuel 23:1, Isaiah 45:1,
Psalms 20:6)
Where does the Torah concept of Messiah come from? One of the central
themes of Biblical prophecy is the promise of a future age of perfection
characterized by universal peace and recognition of God. (Isaiah 2:1-4;
Zephaniah 3:9; Hosea 2:20-22; Amos 9:13-15; Isaiah 32:15-18, 60:15-18;
Micah 4:1-4; Zechariah 8:23, 14:9; Jeremiah 31:33-34)
Many of these prophetic passages speak of a descendant of King David who
will rule Israel during the age of perfection. (Isaiah 11:1-9; Jeremiah
23:5-6, 30:7-10, 33:14-16; Ezekiel 34:11-31, 37:21-28; Hosea 3:4-5)
Since every King is a Messiah, by convention, we refer to this future
anointed king as The Messiah. The above is the only description in the
Bible of a Davidic descendant who is to come in the future. One will
recognize the Messiah by seeing who the King of Israel is at the time of
complete universal perfection.

1. JESUS DID NOT FULFILL THE MESSIANIC PROPHECIES
What is the Messiah supposed to accomplish? The Bible says that he will:
a. Build the Third Temple (Ezekiel 37:26-28).
b. Gather all Jews back to the Land of Israel (Isaiah 43:5-6).
c. Usher in an era of world peace, and end all hatred, oppression,
suffering and disease. As it says: “Nation shall not lift up sword
against nation, neither shall man learn war anymore.” (Isaiah 2:4)
d. Spread universal knowledge of the God of Israel, which will unite
humanity as one. As it says: “God will be King over all the world?on
that day, God will be One and His Name will be One” (Zechariah 14:9).
If an individual fails to fulfill even one of these conditions, then he
cannot be “The Messiah.”
Because no one has ever fulfilled the Bible’s description of this future
King, Jews and Noachides still await the coming of the Messiah. All past
Messianic claimants, including Jesus of Nazareth, Bar Cochba and
Shabbtai Tzvi have been rejected.
Christians counter that Jesus will fulfill these in the Second Coming,
but Torah sources show that the Messiah will fulfill the prophecies
outright. The Hebrew Bible has no concept of a second coming.

2) JESUS DID NOT EMBODY THE PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS OF MESSIAH
a. Messiah As Prophet
The Messiah will become the greatest prophet in history, second only to
Moses. (Targum - Isaiah 11:2; Maimonides - Yad Teshuva 9:2)
Prophecy can only exist in Israel when the land is inhabited by a
majority of world Jewry, a situation which has not existed since 300
BCE. During the time of Ezra, when the majority of Jews refused to move
from Babylon to Israel, prophecy ended upon the death of the last
?Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.
Jesus was not a prophet; he appeared on the scene approximately 350
years after prophecy had ended.
b. Descendent Of David
According to Torah sources, the Messiah will be born of human parents
and possess normal physical attributes like other people. He will not be
a demi-god, 1 nor will he possess supernatural qualities.
The Messiah must be descended on his father’s side from King David (see
Genesis 49:10, Isaiah 11:1, Jeremiah 23:5, 33:17; Ezekiel 34:23-24).
According to the Christian claim that Jesus was the product of a virgin
birth, he had no father -- and thus could not have possibly fulfilled
the messianic requirement of being descended on his father’s side from
King David. 2
c. Torah Observance
The Messiah will lead the Jewish people to full Torah observance. The
Torah states that all mitzvot remain binding forever, and anyone coming
to change the Torah is immediately identified as a false prophet. (Deut.
13:1-4)
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus contradicts the Torah and states
that its commandments are no longer applicable. (See John 1:45 and 9:16,
Acts 3:22 and 7:37)

3) MISTRANSLATED VERSES “REFERRING” TO JESUS
Biblical verses can only be understood by studying the original Hebrew
text?which reveals many discrepancies in the Christian translation.
a. Virgin Birth
The Christian idea of a virgin birth is derived from the verse in Isaiah
7:14 describing an “alma” as giving birth. The word “alma” has always
meant a young woman, but Christian theologians came centuries later and
translated it as “virgin.” This accords Jesus’ birth with the first
century pagan idea of mortals being impregnated by gods.
b. Suffering Servant
Christianity claims that Isaiah chapter 53 refers to Jesus, as the
“suffering servant.”
In actuality, Isaiah 53 directly follows the theme of chapter 52,
describing the exile and redemption of the Jewish people. The prophecies
are written in the singular form because the Jews (“Israel”) are
regarded as one unit. Throughout Jewish scripture, Israel is repeatedly
called, in the singular, the “Servant of God” (see Isaiah 43:8). In
fact, Isaiah states no less than 11 times in the chapters prior to 53
that the Servant of God is Israel. When read correctly, Isaiah 53
clearly [and ironically] refers to the Jewish people being “bruised,
crushed and as sheep brought to slaughter” at the hands of the nations
of the world. These descriptions are used throughout Jewish scripture to
graphically describe the suffering of the Jewish people (see Psalm 44).
Isaiah 53 concludes that when the Jewish people are redeemed, the
nations will recognize and accept responsibility for the inordinate
suffering and death of the Jews.

4) TORAH WISDOM IS BASED DIRECTLY ON NATIONAL REVELATION
Throughout history, thousands of religions have been started by
individuals, attempting to convince people that he or she is God’s true
prophet. But personal revelation is an extremely weak basis for a
religion because one can never know if it is indeed true. Since others
did not hear God speak to this person, they have to take his word for
it. Even if the individual claiming personal revelation performs
miracles, there is still no verification that he is a genuine prophet.
Miracles do not prove anything. All they show?assuming they are
genuine?is that he has certain powers. It has nothing to do with his
claim of prophecy.
Judaism, unique among all of the world’s major religions, does not rely
on “claims of miracles” as the basis for its religion. In fact, the
Bible says that God sometimes grants the power of “miracles” to
charlatans, to test Jewish loyalty to the Torah (Deut. 13:4).
Of the thousands of religions in human history, only Judaism bases its
belief on national revelation?i.e. God speaking to the entire nation. If
God is going to start a religion, it makes sense He’ll tell everyone,
not just one person.
Maimonides states (Foundations of Torah, ch. 8):
The Jews did not believe in Moses, our teacher, because of the miracles
he performed. Whenever anyone’s belief is based on seeing miracles, he
has lingering doubts, because it is possible the miracles were performed
through magic or sorcery. All of the miracles performed by Moses in the
desert were because they were necessary, and not as proof of his
prophecy.
What then was the basis of [Jewish/Torah] belief? The Revelation at
Mount Sinai, which all Jews saw with their own eyes and heard with their
own ears, not dependent on the testimony of others... as it says, “Face
to face, God spoke with you...” The Torah also states: “God did not make
this covenant with our fathers, but with us?who are all here alive
today.” (Deut. 5:3)
Judaism is not miracles. It is the personal eyewitness experience of
every man, woman and child, standing at Mount Sinai over 3,315 years

WAITING FOR THE MESSIAH
The world is in desperate need of Messianic redemption. And to the
extent we are aware of the problems of society, is the extent we will
yearn for redemption. As the Talmud says, one of the first questions
asked of a Jew on Judgment Day is: “Did you yearn for the arrival of the
Messiah?”
How can we hasten the coming of the Messiah? The best way is to love all
humanity generously, to keep the mitzvot of the Torah (as best one can),
and to encourage others to do so as well.
Despite the gloom, the world does seem headed toward redemption. One
apparent sign is that the Jewish people have returned to the Land of
Israel and made it bloom again. Additionally, a major movement is afoot
of young Jews returning to Torah tradition.
The Messiah can come any day, and it all depends on our actions. God is
ready when we are. For as King David says: “Redemption will come
today?if you hearken to His voice.”
FOOTNOTES
1.Maimonides devotes much of the “Guide for the Perplexed” to the
fundamental idea that God is incorporeal, meaning that He assumes no
physical form. God is Eternal, above time. He is Infinite, beyond space.
He cannot be born, and cannot die. Saying that God assumes human form
makes God small, diminishing both His unity and His divinity. As the
Torah says: “God is not a mortal” (Numbers 23:19).
2. In response, it is claimed that Joseph adopted Jesus, and passed on
his genealogy via adoption. There are two problems with this claim:
a) There is no Biblical basis for the idea of a father passing on his
tribal line by adoption. A priest who adopts a son from another tribe
cannot make him a priest by adoption;
b) Joseph could never pass on by adoption that which he doesn’t have.
Because Joseph descended from Jeconiah (Matthew 1:11) he fell under the
curse of that king that none of his descendants could ever sit as king
upon the throne of David. (Jeremiah 22:30; 36:30)
To answer this difficult problem, apologists claim that Jesus traces
himself back to King David through his mother Mary, who allegedly
descends from David, as shown in the third chapter of Luke. There are
four basic problems with this claim:
a) There is no evidence that Mary descends from David. The third chapter
of Luke traces Joseph’s genealogy, not Mary’s.
b) Even if Mary can trace herself back to David, that doesn’t help
Jesus, since tribal affiliation goes only through the father, not
mother. Cf. Numbers 1:18; Ezra 2:59.
c) Even if family line could go through the mother, Mary was not from a
legitimate Messianic family. According to the Bible, the Messiah must be
a descendent of David through his son Solomon (II Samuel 7:14; I
Chronicles 17:11-14, 22:9-10, 28:4-6). The third chapter of Luke is
irrelevant to this discussion because it describes lineage of David’s
son Nathan, not Solomon. (Luke 3:31)
d) Luke 3:27 lists Shealtiel and Zerubbabel in his genealogy. These two
also appear in Matthew 1:12 as descendants of the cursed Jeconiah. If
Mary descends from them, it would also disqualify her from being a
Messianic progenitor.

The Law Defines Human Rights
The Torah's social laws and social system <1> include a statement of
fundamental and scientific social laws of behaviour, of human rights, of
social and community organisation.
It is the social laws of the Torah which in effect state that all are
equal, that no person may exploit another or oppress so as to exploit.
All have the right to be free and independent masters of their own fate
and there has to be a system of social security which guarantees not
just freedom from need but also protection against loss of material and
spiritual independence. In effect, oppression can be and has to be
resisted, struggled against and opposed.
The essential social provisions of Torah law are clear and to the point.
This is what the Torah lays down as a matter of law {1}:
1.. The community has to provide ('lend') money to those who need it,
free of interest.
2.. All such loans, if outstanding, are to be cancelled every seventh
year.
3.. The country's wealth, and this applies particularly to productive
capital such as land, belongs equally to all and needs to be shared out.
4.. Inhabitants are also entitled to have a sabbatical year every
seventh year. During this sabbatical year they are entitled to be freed
from work at the expense of the community.
Every person is entitled as a matter of right to social security. This
means that people are entitled to be supported by the community not only
when they fall on hard times but also to maintain their independence as
independent breadwinners for their families. For example, the community
has to provide backup funds to those who need them and they have to be
provided as and when required.
To prevent people being exploited through their need these funds have to
be provided without charging interest and such 'loans' are cancelled
every seventh year if the borrower has been unable to repay them.
It is the inhabitants who keep the social laws, who keep Torah law, who
are entitled to these rights.
Dictatorship
Obviously it is not surprising that those who follow and keep the social
laws of the Torah have in the past been persecuted by dictatorships of
both right and left, by those who wish to establish and support such
dictatorships, by those who wish to oppress so as to exploit people.
Openly under dictatorship and in more hidden ways under other forms of
government.
The Jewish religion keeps alive the knowledge of these human rights and
social laws, as Jews read the whole of the Torah each year from
beginning to end at weekly services. Jews also celebrate every year the
exodus from Egypt, that successful rebellion of slaves against their
overlords when God freed the slaves.
Hence dictatorships both of the left and of the right, or those who
approve or condone such systems, persecute Jews so as to discredit and
wipe out from human memory that which the Jewish religion teaches,
namely the social laws and social system of the Torah.
Consequences of One's Behaviour
(Social Cause-and-Effect Relationship)
So far we have had a look at the social laws and system of the Torah.
But the Torah also clearly states the consequences of keeping or
rejecting the social laws and social system of the Torah. {1}
In the language of religion the Torah states a fundamental scientific
law, the Social Cause-and-Effect Relationship {1}, which is that the
consequences of keeping or not keeping the Torah laws are inescapable,
that what happens to one is in the end the inevitable result of one's
own behaviour. Also clearly stated is that this is a scientific law
which was defined and stated using the language of religion to get the
message across to listeners in such a way that they could understand at
least the effects of this 'cause-and-effect relationship'. The
relationship is stated in precise terms.
We are told that the cause-and-effect relationship applies to all
without exception and at all times, wherever one may be, regardless of
type of government, form of religion or social system or country. It
applies whether you like it or not, agree or disagree. Freedom and
independence of mind and person and the quality of life depend on one's
behaviour.
Keeping or not keeping the Torah laws has consequences which cannot be
avoided. The consequences are outlined both ways and we are told that
the process is reversible. {1}
The Torah lists and describes the actual results of behaviour both ways,
clearly and powerfully illustrating intermediate stages between the two
ends of the scale. The results of observing the Law are described and so
are those of disregarding the Law.
The process is reversible. Increasingly disregarding the Law results in
greater suffering and oppression, increasingly behaving according to the
Law results in greater freedom and a better life.
The relationship is stated in a way which enables people to benefit from
the effects of their behaviour, even if they do not understand the
underlying interrelation.
If we want freedom, independence, good life of high quality, then we
have to follow these laws. If we do not, then we lose freedom,
independence, good life and the country in which we live. This
Cause-and-Effect Relationship is a fundamental scientific law. The
consequences of our behaviour cannot be avoided but we can change the
course of events by behaving differently.
It so happens that the relationship was stated in the Torah for the
first time but this does not change the general validity of the
relationship. Statistically speaking, whole communities prosper or
suffer (are 'persecuted') as a consequence of their individual and thus
collective behaviour.
Not knowing the law does not prevent consequences of one's behaviour.
Jewish Belief and Practice at the Present Time
Unaware of the Effects of their Behaviour
The social laws of the Torah are now but vaguely understood and commonly
disregarded. Few are aware of their existence as a practical social
system.
What is remarkable is that at the present time the Jewish people are
unaware of the need to keep the laws, of the need to implement the
social system and laws of behaviour which would guarantee their survival
and security and a high standard of living in the land of Israel at the
present time.
How come?
Two Thousand Years Ago
According to Torah law the role of those who are rich is seen to be that
of administering money on behalf of the community and not that of
enriching themselves at the expense of the community. People are
entitled to support from the community not just when hungry or starving
but so as to maintain their independence and improve their security.
Those who were wealthy simply did not wish to provide funds (to those
who needed them) without charging interest and in the knowledge that the
'loan' would be cancelled after some years if it could not be repaid by
those who remained in need.
As the community failed to ensure that those who were wealthy obeyed and
followed the laws, they (the rich and powerful) had the laws changed on
their own behalf to suit themselves. {2, 3, 4}
So about two thousand years ago, just before and during the formative
years of Christianity, the Jewish establishment of that time argued
against the social system of the Torah and succeeded in having the core
laws, which prevented them from exploiting people, bypassed and the
whole social system abrogated, in effect annulled. {3, 4, 5}
They did so by having their religious 'experts' argue against these laws
over a considerable period of time and in this way succeeded in
bypassing the social legislation.
But the changes the establishment of the time was making were so drastic
that the process and the changes were recorded in what is now known as
the Talmud because 'the law was becoming like two laws'. Even so, the
establishment of the day attempted to hide what was actually being said
by abstract arguments and sheer volume of words and succeeded to the
extent that the memory of what they had done faded away into the
background.
While this process took place and while the establishment changed Jewish
religious belief and practice there were some who would not agree and
recorded what was happening and how it was being done. Others, unable to
change the course of events, formed communities who attempted to follow
the fair and just social legislation. And this seems to have been how
Christianity began in the first place. {5}
Basic Causes of Antisemitism
So we see that there are two apparently separate and distinct reasons
for anti-semitism. On the one hand we have that persecution is at least
instigated, or encouraged by condoning, by those who wish to oppress so
as to exploit. On the other we have the fact that Jews behave in ways
which by themselves cause the persecution, apparently unaware at present
that persecution could arise as the direct and inevitable consequence of
their own behaviour.
The fact is that it is because Jews as a people have not observed and at
the present time do not observe the social laws of the Torah that they
quite inevitably suffer from persecution, from anti-semitism.
On the one hand the Jew is persecuted by oppressors because of the laws
of justice and equality he believes in as a matter of God-given law. On
the other hand he suffers the direct consequences of not practicing, of
not putting into effect, the very same laws he is being persecuted for.
Remedies and Cure
Obliterating the observance of the social laws will not prevent
persecution from oppressors. On the other hand the dire consequences of
not putting into effect the social system of the Torah are quite
inevitable. Twice already were Jews driven out of Israel because the
social system of the Torah was bypassed and rejected {2} and the third
time is at present coming closer year by year.
Hence the Jew if he wishes to avoid anti-semitism has to find out about
and put into effect the social system of the Torah under modern
conditions. {7}
To the extent to which this is done will the knowledge spread that Jews
are persecuted by oppressors and dictators because Jews are on the side
of freedom and independence, that Jews are in the forefront of this
struggle.
A New Factor has Entered into the Equation
This is the end of the twentieth century and a new factor has entered
the equation. {6, 7}
Up to now it did not really matter whether a few people suffered,
whether the odd village was wiped out in a war fought for the benefit of
another establishment, whether a whole country and its people were
devastated. Of course, it did matter but what I mean is that it did not
mean the end of humanity. The point is that as a result of the impact of
technology and increasing speed of transport and communication it is
possible for the first time in the history of human beings on this
planet for just one or only a very few socially irresponsible persons to
do something or to introduce changes which could destroy us all as human
beings or else make this planet uninhabitable for human beings.
I showed ten years ago in 'Social Responsibility, Profits and Social
Accountability' {6} that we were experiencing a sequence of accidents
and catastrophes which were occurring more and more frequently and were
affecting more and more people.
Since then most people have become aware of this. But I also showed what
could be done about this trend of events.
So now we do not have a choice. If we do not now observe and put into
effect the social system of the Torah and its code of behaviour then the
planet will become uninhabitable for human beings.

Anti-Semitism: ..... What Is It?

SUMMARY:
The word "anti-Semitism" is inadequate. It is a misnomer. The word was
coined in 1879 from the Greek words "anti", meaning "against" and
"Semite", meaning a descendant of Shem. The word was first used by
Wilhelm Marr a German agitator, who created it to explain the current
anti-Jewish campaigns in Europe. Since the Arab peoples are also Semitic
people it is not the best expression. Anti-Jewish, and Jew- hatred, are
more descriptive. It is more than just prejudice. The word came into
general use in the past hundred years and encompasses all forms of
hostility manifested toward Jews throughout history.
There can be economic and social or racial anti-Semitism. It didn't
reach epidemic proportions until 175 B.C. Previous uprisings against
Jews were not really anti-Semitic. It began almost exclusively in
countries which later became part of the Roman Empire. Prejudice flared
it seems because Jewish people in honouring their Jewish laws, appeared
to be in defiance of Gentile governments. The false assumption began to
emerge that Jews didn't have any respect for whatever was held in esteem
by the rest of humanity.
In the Greek Hellenistic period no other nation denied the gods of
it's neighbours; on the contrary they recognized those gods, identifying
them with their own deities. These heathen "gods" created a social bond
between people in their domains. None of the people refrained from
dining at table with their neighbours and from partaking of the
sacrifices offered to their gods except the Jews. None of the peoples
refused to send gifts to its neighbours temples, except the Jews. None
of the peoples was unequivocally hostile to intermarriage except the
Jews.
In the eastern Mediterranean area friction arose over the difference
in occupations between Jews and Gentiles. The Jewish population was
engaged primarily in small scale farming; the non-Jewish population
occupied itself primarily in commerce. The sea trade was almost entirely
in the hands of the trans-Jordanian cities, which connected Syria, Asia
Minor and the regions of the Euphrates with the Arabian countries. The
inhabitants of Eretz Israel had connections abroad. Non-Jews also knew
that Jews looked upon their land as their divine inheritance.
The first serious manifestation of anti-Semitism was in the days of
the Syrian, Antiochus Epiphanes in 175 B.C. Hellenistic rulers saw the
unfriendliness of the Jews as obstacles to the cultural scene. He
undertook to destroy those laws of the Talmud that he regarded as
unacceptable to humanity. To this end he desecrated their place of
worship by sacrificing a pig on their altar in Jerusalem, and ordered
that the residual juices be sprinkled over the Holy Books containing
these Jewish laws.
Greek authors in the first century portrayed the Jewish people as
descendants of a mob of lepers. They further stated that because of this
uncleanness Jews shunned the flesh of pigs, since pigs were more prone
to contract disease. The Gentiles knew that their own pagan religions
and practices rendered them unclean in the eyes of the Jews.
The fact remains that even after four thousand years the idea of a
covenant between the Jews and Jehovah is still alive; and is mentioned
daily in prayers in synagogues throughout the world. The idea of a
covenant with God has remained constant. Because Jehovah is immortal He
never dies and because He never dies He never has to be reincarnated.
Thus the Jews dispensed with the reincarnation rites of the pagans. The
Jews' God was invisible. The concept of "one God", Jehovah, being
completely withdrawn from sexuality led to a curb of licentious impulses
through inner discipline. By contrast ,the Greek gods themselves set the
pattern for the unbridled lust and perversion which finally weakened the
moral fibre of that people; whereas the Jews, even when they later came
in contact with the Greeks, refused to indulge in the Grecian sexual
excesses, which included even temple prostitution. The Jewish religion
did away with all fertility rites.
As a consequence of the Jewish dietary laws, intermarriage was
forbidden and no real social intercourse with gentiles was possible.
Also, Jews refused to enter into Emperor worship. It was considered to
be an expression of loyalty to the state. About their own religious
practices a libel began to circulate that Jews actually sacrificed
humans on their altars, allegedly using the blood for Passover rites.
Further it was said that the sacrificed person must be a Christian or
one of their children. This became known as the "Blood Libel" against
the Jews. It mattered not that it was a total fabrication.
Another libel circulating was that unclean leprous people were
expelled from Egypt, and that the Jews were these people. Therefore,
being foreigners, it was stated that the Jews had no right to claim
ancient Israel as their divinely given land.
The destruction of the temple by Titus in 70 AD was seen as hatred by
God of the Jews, and as punishment. Jews in Rome felt the barbs of Roman
writers. Nero's teacher was anti-Semitic. Cornelius Tacitus wrote about
every libellous fabrication against Jews that he could find in Greek
anti-Semitic literature. Juvenal wrote a poem revealing that to him the
Jews were hateful not only to man but to the gods as well.
In the fourth century AD, when Constantine became the Roman Emperor
and supposedly converted to Christianity, he harnessed Political power
to Religion and passed anti-Jewish laws, whereby Jews were excluded from
every sphere of political influence, and denied civic rights.
The Gospel accounts began to be the source from which wrong teachings
grew, until the word "Deicide" meant the Jews killed God, and were
labelled "Christ-killers". Matthew 27:25 which spoke of some Jewish
leaders was used instead to apply to all Jews: "His blood be on us and
on our children...Ye are of your father the devil."
Converts to Christianity and converts to Judaism sparked a seriously
divisive rivalry. Religious competition began between the Greek fathers
of the Church, and Jews. Church laws were passed whereby Jewish
relations with Christian women was now punishable by death.
Anti-Semitism at this time was mainly limited to the clergy, who were
the educated minority.
Islam arose in the seventh century AD, and also attacked the Jews
because the Jews did not recognize Muhammad as a legitimate Prophet. The
Koran contained their writings; and many statements in it were hostile
to Jews. In the Middle Ages church councils legislated to prevent
contact with the Jews because Christians were saying after visiting
synagogues that the Jews were better priests.
This historical background of centuries of anti-Semitism eventually
exploded in the 20th century "Holocaust". The hostility and hatred
manifested in the holocaust was therefore not new. As we have stated
ancient writings contain much anti-Semitism. In pre-Roman times most
people did not read or write. At times, Rome tried to eradicate Judaism
and "Jewishness". Followers were assumed to be treasonous and
subversive. This in turn led to major revolts on the part of the Jewish
community.

Titus took Jerusalem - second revolt. Over one million Jews killed.

Purim festival celebrating God's deliverance to Mordecai and the Jews
through Esther and the fasting. Lies spread that Jews kill Christians
for sacrifice. Emperor Severus also said the Jews purchased 90,000
Christians to kill them.
306 A.D.
Council in Spain banned Christians & Jews meeting or marrying.
325 A.D.
Constantine changed the celebration of Easter on the calendar so that
it did not coincide with the Jewish Passover.
379 A.D.
Vicious writing by St. John Chrysostom and St. Ambrose in Milan who
said: "The Jews are the most worthless of all men. They are lecherous,
greedy, rapacious. They are perfidious murderers of Christ. They worship
the Devil. Their religion is a sickness. The Jews are the odious
assassins of Christ and for killing God there is no expiation possible,
no indulgence or pardon. Christians may never cease vengeance, and the
Jew must live in servitude forever. God always hated the Jews. It is
essential that all Christians hate them." He was called the Bishop with
the Golden Tongue. St. Ambrose, Bishop of the Church offered to burn the
synagogue himself.
395 A.D.
St. Gregory of Nyssa in sermons and writings characterized Jews as
assassins of the Prophets, companions of the Devil, a race of vipers, a
Sanhedrin of Demons, enemies of all that is beautiful, hogs and goats in
their lewd grossness.
415 A.D.
Bishop Severus BURNED THE SYNAGOGUE IN THE VILLAGE OF MAGONA. BISHOP
OF
ALEXANDRIA, ST. CYRIL EXPELLED JEWS FROM ALEXANDRIA AND GAVE THE MOB

This notorious allegation that Jews murder non-Jews, especially
Christians, in order to obtain blood for the Passover or other rituals
is a complex of deliberate lies, trumped up accusations, and popular
beliefs about the murder-lust of the Jews and their blood-thirstiness,
based on the conception that Jews hate Christianity and mankind in
general. It is combined with the delusion that Jews are in some way not
human and must have recourse to special remedies and subterfuges in
order to appear at least outwardly, like other men. The blood libel led
to trials and massacres of Jews. Its origin is rooted in ancient almost
primordial, concepts concerning the potency and energies of blood. It is
one of the most terrible expressions of human cruelty and credulity.
These blood rituals are expressly forbidden in Judaism. (See Leviticus
17;11 etc.)

The Reformation. At the end of Martin Luther's life the German
reformer vilified the Jews in violent pamphlets which could not fail to
exert their influence. But because Calvinists were steeped in Old
Testament theology, the Dutch people respected the Jews as "the Chosen"
people; and were not anti-Semitic in their faith. The reformation was a
time of turmoil as the Roman Church and feudalism lost their supremacy.
There was a rising up of Nationhood and Luther was a German nationalist.
The Talmud was seized and burned everywhere by Papal authority. Jews in
Catholic countries and Polish Jews suffered greatly. Luther's
anti-Semitic writings were later used in anti-Semitic literature.
1553 A.D.
Rome seized and burned the Talmud by order of the POPE.
1559 A.D.
12,000 copies of Talmud burned in Milan.
1569 A.D.
POPE PIUS V ordered all Jews out of the Papal states.
1593 A.D.
EXPULSIONS from Italy and Bavaria.
1598 A.D.
Ritual murder charge that sent three Jews to their deaths. Execution
of the supposed guilty was done by QUARTERING. (In his book the "Birth

spreading. It was concocted in Paris by an unknown author working for
the Russian secret police. It was an alleged conference of the leaders
of World Jewry. It was translated into all the world languages. In 1963
a Spanish edition was published. During World War II, the Protocols of
the elders of Zion became an implicit justification for the GENOCIDE of
the Jews and Nazi propaganda relied on them until the last days of the
Third Reich. Smaller pamphlets of it have been distributed in B.C. 1983

CONCLUSION:
The above catalogue is only the tip of the iceberg! One would think
that anti-Jewish atrocities would have ended with the nightmare of the
Holocaust. One-third of the world's Jews were murdered by an ungodly
German conspiracy that had accused the Jews of "conspiracy". It is not
often emphasized that two-thirds of the world's Jews survived; and that
due to the faithfulness of their G-d. God has again, as in times past,
protected them from total extermination, as He promised. (the Book of
Esther, and Jeremiah 31:35-37)
The Holocaust was the final catalyst which led to the re-creation of
the State of Israel in 1948. But we have to go back at the very least to
the DREYFUS CASE to understand the long range process.
Alfred Dreyfus was the son of a wealthy Alsatian family in France. He
entered the French Army in 1892 and became a Captain, and the only Jew.
He was framed by a fellow officer for allegedly giving secrets to the
enemy, arrested and tried for treason. He was sentenced to life
imprisonment. Eventually Emile Zola took up the fight proclaiming the
man's innocence and published an open letter to the President of France
titled "I ACCUSE." Dreyfus was eventually declared unjustly convicted by
the Parliament of France. The injustice was totally motivated by
Jew-hatred.
During the course of the trumped-up trial a Jewish journalist became
involved; and he was the man that was to lead the Jews back to their
Land. His name was THEODORE HERZL (1860 - 1904 A.D.) and he called
European Jewry together in Basle, Switzerland in 1897 at the now famous
"First World Zionist Congress". There in 1897 he publicly predicted to
friend and foe alike that the Jews would be back in "the Land" of
Palestine "within 50 years". In 1947, exactly fifty years later the
United Nations passed the "Resolution For the Partition of Palestine",
which lead to the declaration of Statehood on May 14,1948.
With the shouts of "death" to the Jews still ringing in his ears from
the Dreyfus Trial, Herzl became convinced that the only solution was the
mass exodus of the Jews from their present places of residence to a
territory of their own... So out of the suffering of the Dreyfus family
came the State of Israel. Herzl became the father of Political Zionism
and founder of the World Zionist organization.
Herzl was born in Budapest. He left a German students society in 1883
in protest against his first encounter with anti-Semitism. He came
across this "Jewish problem" again and again in his life. Although he
graduated in 1884 with a doctorate of law he left the legal profession
and became a famous writer. He wrote many literary works, some of them
plays.
In 1891 he became the Paris correspondent of a Vienna newspaper. He
pursued politics and organized the first Zionist Congress is Basle in
1897. (In 1960, Israel issued a centenary stamp with a well known
painting of Herzl on the bridge at Basle.) The World Zionist
organization was formed. He was chairman and remained so for the next
five congresses. He knew Great Britain would be the deciding factor in
the realization of Zionist aims. In 1917 the Balfour Declaration became
the launching-pad for the founding of the modern Jewish state.
Herzl did not have an easy task. Even his own people were difficult on
this issue. His heart failed in 1904. He did not live to see the
creation of Israel in 1948. But in 1949 he was laid to rest, reinterred
in a place that was named in his honour Mount Herzl, in Jerusalem. A
Herzl monument stands nearby. The anniversary of his death on the 20th
of Tammuz was declared a National Memorial Day in Israel. In the April
1983 issue of the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, following a report on Jerusalem
there is a picture that could be titled: "The sorrow of the Jewish
People". There are three young Israeli ladies, soldiers, who happen to
be very beautiful standing or kneeling at the Herzl Tomb site where
there are three new graves...the first soldiers to die in the 1982
conflict in Lebanon.
1983 was the 50th anniversary of Hitler's rise to power; since he was
made chancellor in 1933. There was an extensive report on this subject
in the April 1983 issue of the Jerusalem Post. Their man in Bonn stated:
"There has been no substantial break with the past. Therefore West
German Democracy must continue to be subject to question by Germans more
than by anyone else." The Post also offered these words which are worth
contemplating. Perhaps you never considered this. I had not...
"The destruction that Hitler brought on his own people ranks only
after the mass murder he committed on the Jews and the destruction and
death rained upon the Soviet Union. He left Germany not only physically
ruined, but stripped of its' self respect, ashamed of its' place in
human history, uncertain of its' identity, seeking refuge in the
compulsive reconstruction of material damage."
They also mentioned...
"The war Hitler unleashed and the organized mass murder that was a
central part of his design cost the lives of 40 million human beings in
Europe alone. Among them 6,000,000 Jews - two-thirds of the Jews in
Europe. More than 6,000,000 of his own people also died and others were
left hungry."
God promised Abraham: "I will bless those who bless you (and your
descendants); and I will curse those who curse you" (Genesis 12:1-3) We
can see that the Germans have paid an awful price for allowing this man
to lead them down a path contrary to Scripture, by declaring them to be
a super race. The man who wanted to obtain the whole world, gained
nothing but eternal damnation. He and those who followed him lost
everything.
What about Canada?
Most of us would be quick to say that our hands are clean. A truly
shocking indictment of our role in the Holocaust can be found in the
book "None is Too Many". This title was taken from a statement made by
an immigration official when a delegation of Jews went to Ottawa in 1939
to ask: "How many Jews will Canada take in?" The Immigration Minister
answered "None is too many".
The authors, Irving Abella and Harold Troper, published this book in
1982 and was on the Canadian Best Sellers List. They received an award
early in 1983 for it. It is thoroughly researched and documented proof
that our top bureaucrat in the Immigration Department, Fred Blair, a
professing Christian, wanted no Jews in Canada and did everything he
could in the way of roadblocks to prevent it. In studying it I find I
want to scream with the agony of our shame.
MacKenzie King didn't want them. Perhaps he was too busy talking to
his dead mother and his dead dog as he gazed into his crystal ball (all
told in his published diaries). The authors record that Canada's Prime
Minister thought Hitler had a good face and that he was sweet. King was
deathly afraid of what Quebec would do if he gave in and allowed in
refugees. The French -Canadian press was very hostile to Jews (Le
Devoir). There was also a very vocal fascist Party in Quebec; headed by
Adrianne Arcand.
Blair had the opportunity to rescue thousands, but wouldn't budge on
his restrictive policy. He just didn't want any Jewish immigrants.
Lester Pearson said that we didn't have a boat. Ottawa would not
listen either to the pleas of George Vanier; even though he was Canadian
Ambassador to France and was there on the scene.
Conservative Robert Manion didn't want any either. In the midst of all
of the obstruction the Toronto Globe & Mail asked at one point "Does
Canada stand for anything?" Manion wanted no Jews as long as Canadians
were unemployed. Ernest LaPointe of Quebec and the Le Devoir newspaper
and Vincent Massey of External Affairs wanted Jews kept out of Canada.
Massey was a fringe member of the Pro-German anti-Semitic Cliveden set
centred around Lord and Lady Astor in London; where Vincent was Canadian
High Commissioner.
We had one social worker on the scene and her name was Charlotte
Whitton, outspoken Mayor of Ottawa. She fiercely fought not to have
Jewish children here as she favoured British children. She led a
movement to evacuate endangered British mothers and children. The
Canadian Jewish Congress saw her as an enemy of Jewish immigration.
Oscar Cohen said she "almost broke up the inaugural meeting of the
congress on Refugees by her insistent opposition and very apparent
anti-Semitism."
The saddest story I have ever read in my life is the whole chapter
from the Abella book titled "The children that never came." It takes
care of any pride we may have in being Canadians. It is documented
evidence 25 pages in length of continuous pleading on behalf of
officials in places like France and Poland to take children whose lives
were in immediate danger. Blair's hard hearted efforts lead to the
declaration in the end of that chapter that reads: "There were no more
schemes to help...save the refugee children. None were needed." By the
time of the allied invasion of France in June 1944 most of these
children had been murdered. NOT ONE of them had made it to Canada! They
had been talking at times about as many as 5000.
I am happy to report that good has come out of the publishing of this
book. The authors report that Lloyd Axworthy, current Minister of
Immigration, apologized for the behaviour of predecessors and promised
that it would never happen again. But also having read some papers by
these authors prior to publication, Ron Atkey, former Conservative
Minister of Immigration, took the responsibility and opened the doors to
the BOAT PEOPLE because he did not want to be known as another Frederick
Blair.
In "Bridges for Peace", the 1983 issue from Tulsa, Oklahoma we read
about the state of anti-Semitism as in this day, media coverage is
slanted.
"While some would have you believe the world is becoming a better
place and anti-Semitism is on the wane, I believe that careful
observation will prove otherwise. In the last two years, we have seen a
growing double standard used by the media in reporting events concerning
Israel. And as we saw this past summer in Greece, Italy, and France,
this very distorted, even false media reporting about Israel's
involvement in Lebanon resulted in attacks against local Jewish
communities solely because they were Jewish; regardless of their
affiliation with Israel. For example: In France a video tape of a
Palestinian boy holding his bleeding, dying sister was repeatedly shown
as the result of an aggressive Jewish attack on civilians in Lebanon.
Local Frenchmen, incensed by this news, staged an anti-Israel,
anti-Jewish march which culminated in the bombing of synagogues and
Jewish owned businesses killing many. It was later proven that this
video tape was six years old and showing the destruction of the
Tel-Zatar refugee camp by the SYRIANS in 1976. Jews were NOT even
involved but the ugly head of Anti-Semitism had already shown itself."
AND SO IT NEVER SEEMS TO END.
But it will. One day the Bible says we shall take the hem of the Jews'
skirt and go with them to Zion because we know God is with them.
Zechariah tells us that the Lord will come and place His feet on the
Mount of Olives. He will fight for His people Israel against all the
nations of the world. All the land of Israel will dwell in safety and
peace when the Messiah comes. He will rule and reign from Jerusalem, the
Son of David, sitting on David's throne. (Read 2 Samuel 7:11-16; and
Psalm 2:6-8;and 89:20-37)
Regardless of Israel's sins of the past the Lord will forgive,
cleanse, and restore (Jeremiah 31:31-34).
Christians throughout the world are awakening to a call to stand by
the side of the Jewish people. Beginning in 1979 Christians in Jerusalem
rallied to her side when the governments of the World began to pull
their embassies out of Jerusalem in fear because of the Arab oil power.
The "International Christian Embassy, Jerusalem" was established. With
people like Jan Willem Van Der Hoeven and the Comfort Zion ministry of
Merv and Merla Watson, Jews are beginning to be provoked to jealousy.
They are watching Christian love in action; and hope is being reborn
when they see 5000 Christians celebrating during the Jewish "Feast of
Tabernacles", dancing with joy on Mount Zion and supporting them in
their hour of need.
If Canada's Joe Clark had kept his promise to move our embassy to
Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, he would have done better. Six months after
breaking his promise he ceased to be Prime Minister; and twelve months
later he was removed as Leader of the Progressive-Conservative Party.
Coincidence? God hears our promises; even "election promises". The
Scripture says God will bless those who bless Israel and curse those who
curse her. Every nation that has persecuted the Jews has, in the long
run, inherited the negative side of God's promise to Abram: "and I will
curse those who curse you (and your descendants)."
SO IN CONCLUSION:
Anti-Semitism is a venomous condition of the heart of man and not just
prejudice, hatred or discrimination. Jealousy and envy of the Jew more
than anything else seems to be the main root of this condition. It is a
spiritual problem. But Jeremiah said it best and it is truth from God's
Word... "The heart is deceitful, and desperately wicked; who can know
it?".
Anti-Semitism engages man in a conduct that is: inconceivable,
unbelievable, shocking, grotesque, incomprehensible, unthinkable,
inhumane and intolerable.
This information has been gleaned from Alan Lazerte's course on
anti-Semitism given at Fraserview Assembly, January, February and March
1983 as Director of the Canadian Friends of the International Christian
Embassy, Jerusalem.

THE NOMINATION OF SENATOR LIEBERMAN, THE GOLEM, THE DEATH OF JESUS, AND
THE REAL CAUSE OF ANTI-SEMITISM
The nomination of Senator Joseph Lieberman for Vice-President was one of
the most important moments in American Jewish history. For the New Haven
Jewish community, it was an incredible moment. This is a man whom a lot
of us know personally. We see him at the Kosher Deli. For those of us
who have been his supporters for years when he ran for offices including
Congress, Attorney General and then Senator, well, we were busting with
pride and personal excitement.
To state the obvious, the nomination of Lieberman was a fantastic shock
because we did not think that it would ever happen to a Jewish person.
At my family's Friday night dinner table a few days before the
announcement, the adults told the children that it would never happen.
We were thinking about anti-Semitism. We were proud but we were worried.
Now some weeks have passed, and, for the most part, we’re feeling less
worried. The nomination of Lieberman does not seem to have awakened the
anti-Semitism that we feared. Is anti-Semitism out there? Is it right
here in our community and our state? Don’t be misled: There’s plenty of
hatred, plenty of ignorance. What we have learned is that, for right now
at least, anti-Semitism in public is not fashionable. But don’t pretend
that it’s not there: It is. If you ask my daughter Rachel, who works in
Senator Lieberman’s office in Washington, how much hatred is pouring
into that office, you'll learn that none of this is smooth or easy.
Here we are on Rosh Hashanah, happy with ourselves, happy with life,
full of pride. It is the time when our Jewishness is at the max, when we
are full of pride in our religion and our people. And yet, there have
been many moments in our lives when, to tell you the truth, being Jewish
has been very difficult. Being different from the majority is hard
enough. December is hard enough. But when you have been the victim of
prejudice, or a cutting remark about your people or your religion, it
gets to you in a way that you never really get over. Someone said
something 50 years ago and it's still there, gnawing at you.
I was raised in Maryland. My father was a rabbi so my Jewishness was not
exactly a secret. My father’s synagogue was burned to the ground by
anti-Semites. I grew up hearing things that make me shudder even today.
I had pennies thrown at me.
Some place inside every Jewish heart is a question: “Why do people hate
us?” Every time we hear of a madman shooting innocent people or of the
waves of hate coming over the Internet, we wonder: “Why? What did we do
to deserve this?”
I’d like to speak today about one theory concerning anti-Semitism. There
are many theories about anti-Semitism and many reasons for it. I’m
giving a course this fall in the Midrasha Institute about these issues.
Today I just want to talk about one theory, a theory you probably haven’t
heard before. I’ll get into it in my own roundabout way.
Tomorrow I’ll talk about Judaism and magic. Of all of the stories about
Jewish magic, the most famous is that of the Golem. The Golem was a kind
of Frankenstein monster, created by Rabbi Judah Loew of Prague, a great
scholar and leader of his community. By harnessing the power of the Name
of G-d, Rabbi Loew was able to create a kind of living robot who would
do important errands for him. The Golem could not speak but it could
follow orders.
We are speaking of the Jewish community of Prague in the sixteenth
century. The Jewish people were always at the mercy of their
anti-Semitic neighbors. The Golem was a kind of Jewish Columbo, who
acted as a detective to figure out what was really going on.
On Erev Pesach, on the Eve of Passover 1584, Rabbi Loew was chanting the
prayers and he made a mistake. Instead of saying that G-d changes the
seasons, “umachalif et hazmanim,” Rabbi Loew said that G-d “sours the
seasons”, “umachamitz et hazmanim.” Now you or I might make such a
mistake, but Rabbi Loew didn’t make such mistakes. What frightened him
was the ill omen that seemed to be involved. He assumed that G-d had
made him make this mistake. He figured that there must be a hint in the
fact that he said umachameetz, to make the seasons hametz, leavened,
soured. There seemed to be a connection to chametz and to matzah. He
told everyone to stop praying immediately, and sent the Golem to his
house to get two different matzahs, a regular piece and a piece of
Shemurah Matzah, special matzah used at the Seder. The Golem came back
with the two matzahs, and Rabbi Loew told him to taste them. The first
piece was fine, but the shemurah matzah made the Golem deathly pale and
full of pain. The matzah had been poisoned.
The anti-Semites of Prague were full of glee: "Look at these stupid
Jews," they said, "They poison each other at their holy festival meal."
Rabbi Loew decreed that no one should eat any matzah made in Prague,
that it was chametz, because he was so worried that most of the matzah
was poison. He then did an investigation and found out that on the last
day of baking, two non-Jewish men, called Redbeards, had been hired to
help bake. Rabbi Loew sent the Golem to the house of the Redbeards to
look for any suspicious vials of liquid or packages of powder. The Golem
was back in an instant, with a box of powder that had the same odor as
that of the poisoned matzah. Rabbi Loew had the Golem return the box of
powder to the Redbeards’ place. He then went to the police. When the
police interrogated the Redbeards, they explained that a certain monk
had told them to do it. The monk wanted the Jewish people to stop
observing their religion by making the matzah poison. He wanted to make
it seem that Pesach was a holiday of death. He wanted to connect all
this to the accusation that the Jews had killed Jesus on Passover; now
they would be punished by dying from poisoned matzah on the same
holiday.
This anti-Semite wanted to accuse the Jewish people of a terrible thing
that he had done. He had poisoned the matzah. But G-d made Rabbi Loew
make the mistake, and gave the community the Golem, so that they would
not suffer and so that the accusations of the anti-Semites would be
demonstrated to be false.
I have always thought of the Golem as a quaint subject of magical
stories. Now I understand the deeper meaning of these stories. Just as
we love superheroes like Superman who have the power to save us, so the
Golem was a mythical creature who, in our fantasies, saved us from the
injustice of anti-Semites.
But notice something else, and this is crucial: The Golem shows that the
crimes committed are not committed by the Jewish people who will suffer
for the crimes but by the anti-Semites themselves.
This fits perfectly with the theory of Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel in
Holland in 1656 who said that people who hate Jewish people notice
something about themselves and then project it onto the Jewish people.
This psychological theory of projection, centuries before Freud, is a
fascinating explanation of what anti-Semitism is.
Anti-Semitic accusations are about crimes that the Anti-Semites did.
The world’s evils, the evils of the non-Jewish world, are made into
Jewish evils.
Two years ago on Rosh Hashanah, I gave a sermon about the movie Shine. I
pointed out that this popular and seemingly harmless movie about a young
piano prodigy was actually astonishingly anti-Semitic, turning the
father of the prodigy into a concentration camp victim, which he was
not, and then into a kind of Nazi who preyed on his innocent son. It was
saying: "You see, don’t have so much sympathy for the victims of the
Holocaust; they’re as bad as the Nazis."
My point, especially to all of the nice people who saw the movie and
missed what was going on, was that we must see anti-Semitism in its
subtle forms. We need to see how anti-Semitism even creeps into our own
thoughts and expressions.
Today I am trying to explain that not only is this true, but that we can
learn historically where the lies come from. If we can understand where
the lies come from, we can defend ourselves against anti-Semitism in a
very different way. We can stop being defensive, we must stop
half-believing the lies.
They took our money, and said that we stole other’s money. Look at
history and see how one nation after another would bring the Jews in,
allow them to prosper, and then take their money and throw them out.
They took our money, and accused us of being moneygrubbers. And they
still do.
They sold slaves, and called us the slave traders. On a local campus,
here in New Haven, this lie of saying that Jews were the principal slave
traders has been perpetrated. But do you know what? There were a lot
more black slave traders of black slaves than there ever were Jewish
slave traders. There are black slave traders to this very day.
One of the most important stories in the history of anti-Semitism is
that of Alfred Dreyfus. Around a hundred years ago in France, this
Jewish officer was accused of selling military secrets to the Germans.
He was innocent, but in the most celebrated case of its time, Dreyfus
was found guilty, stripped of his military rank in a horrific public
humiliation, sent to Devil’s Island, to torture and inhuman cruelty, all
for something he didn’t do. But somebody did do the spying. Guess who?
One of the accusers. The real spy was a man who had received money from
the Jewish financier Rothschild, needed more money, got it by spying
against France for the Germans, but then was instrumental in framing
Dreyfus for the crime that he had committed.
Watching the horrible scene of Dreyfus’ public humiliation was a
Viennese journalist named Theodore Herzl. Herzl had been only nominally
Jewish before this event. But Herzl became the father of modern Zionism
because he realized that without a state of their own, the Jewish people
would always be at the mercy of lies and hatred.
Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel’s theory that anti-Semites accuse Jewish
people of their own crimes has been utilized by a modern scholar named
James Shapiro, first in a book about Shakespeare and the Jews and now in
a new book about the German passion play. This horrible play, though
somewhat modified today, is about the killing of Jesus by the Jewish
people.
Of all the stories, of all the accusations, of all the reasons for
anti-Semitism, it is the accusation that the Jewish people killed Jesus
that has been the most destructive. So let's talk about it.
After researching this issue for years, after digging into every primary
source and after reading the best modern scholarship on the subject, I
have come to a strong and positive conclusion:
The anti-Semites turned a story about a Jewish man who was killed by
non-Jews into a story about a non-Jewish man who was killed by the
Jewish people.
The Romans were the only people in Judea who could execute anyone. No
Jewish person could execute anyone. In fact, it would have been a
capital crime for a Jewish person to do so.
Early Christianity, trying to spread in the Roman Empire, did not want
to blame the Romans for the death of their savior. While trying to
convert the Romans, it just wouldn’t do to blame them for the death of
Jesus. But the death of Jesus was a key part of the story. You have to
blame someone. Who do you blame? There’s only one other candidate: The
Jewish people. Never mind that they couldn’t have done it. Never mind
that in your own story all of the masses of Jewish people loved Jesus.
Blame it on the Jews. And while you're at it, turn Jesus into an Aryan
hero who really wasn't Jewish at all.
And while you’re at it, make up a character named Judas. Make him up out
of whole cloth to represent the Judeans. Get it: Judas-Judea-Judaism.
But where will we get the story about Judas? I know: Look in the Bible
in the story of David. David, after all, is the ancestor of the Messiah.
Now let's see here, when there was a revolution against King David, one
of his advisers went to the other side; he betrayed his king. If you
follow the story of this adviser who sold out, detail by detail, you
will find that the story of Judas was plagiarized from that earlier
story. It was made up.
I’ll say it again: The execution of a Jewish man by non-Jews was turned
into a story about a non-Jewish man who was killed by the Jews.
That’s the formula: Blame us for what they did!
In understanding anti-Semitism, we must be like the Golem, detectives
for the Jewish people, trying to understand where the false accusations
come from.
Be proud of your Jewishness.
And if anyone says that the Jews killed Jesus, or that Jews are
moneygrubbers, or any other such canard, be prepared with the facts. You
learn more about the accuser than the accused.
A personal story. The week of the Democratic convention, I was on
vacation with my family in Virginia. We were down there because our son
Danny was participating in the Maccabi games. The Maccabi games are the
third biggest sports event in the world, next to the Olympics and the
Pan-American games. The participants are thousands of Jewish teenagers
from around the world.
So here I am, in Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederacy, at
VCU, Virginia Commonwealth University, and I’m out of place and frankly
I’m bored by the speeches and welcomes. But then at a certain point, the
lights go out and the spotlight is on one large delegation of young
Jewish athletes after another. There’s one from Great Britain and one
from Michigan and one from Venezuela and one from Canada. And each
delegation in its own distinct outfit walks in, carrying a banner,
yelping and dancing. I don’t even know it, but the tears are streaming
down my face. All of the centuries of hatred and persecution and ghettos
and concentration camps and we’re still here and we’re young and proud
and free. And then just in case I don’t get it, here come the athletes
from the State of Israel. And I’m so moved that I can hardly breathe. I
look at Dorene, the daughter of Holocaust survivors, who’s crying and
cheering at the same time. And then here’s the group from Connecticut,
and in the middle is my son Danny, gabbing with a girl. He could be at a
party for all he knows. I’m weeping and he’s flirting. And then I
realize that that’s just perfect, because to him, anti-Semitism is part
of history. Thank G-d, he didn’t go through what I went through, or G-d
forbid what his maternal grandparents from Europe went through. He never
had pennies thrown at him. Instead, he’s a Maccabi athlete, one of five
thousand, and all of them collected pennies, 600,000 pennies, to give to
disabled kids. And all of this is happening in Richmond, the capital of
the Confederacy.
Later that night we went to a motel and I watched a nice Jewish boy
being nominated for Vice President of the United States.
And I realized why the anti-Semites will lose. They will lose because
they were never right about us to begin with. The horrible accusations
they made about us were really about themselves, and evil, in the end,
will always self-destruct.
Whenever people spread evil gossip, or make up accusations out of whole
cloth, think about it: They are revealing more about their own lurid
imaginations than about anyone or anything else. They are projecting.
We Jewish people, for all we’ve been through, will prevail.
And if there were ever a time for us to be confident, the time is now.
But that does not mean that we should pretend that hatred is gone. What
I’ve tried to do today is to make you think about where the hatred comes
from. It comes from ignorance, and prejudice, but mostly it comes from
the imaginations of people who are revealing their own evil by their
crazy accusations about the Jewish people. That’s what the
investigations of the Golem showed.
They poisoned the matzah and then said that we did.
We didn’t kill Jesus; he was a Jewish man who was a threat to the
non-Jewish Romans.
Dreyfus wasn’t a German spy; one of his accusers was.
We are the Jewish people. We have survived for thousands of years,
through all of the genocide and persecution, because we knew that the
haters and killers were wrong about us.
So when someone in your workplace says that the Jews killed Jesus, don’t
let it go. Answer from knowledge.
If someone makes a crack about the Jews and money, or even a so-called
compliment about Jews and money, don’t let it go.
Whether or not Joe Lieberman becomes Vice President, we have a right to
be proud and thrilled. And we should learn the lesson that ultimately,
truly being Jewish can earn the respect of others. Being observant does
not have to be a handicap. We don’t have to hide it. People respect a
person who follows his or her religion. But you have to be consistent
about it. You can’t pull out your Jewishness when you want a day off.
You have to be consistent.
So here we are on Rosh Hashanah 5761, proud to be Jewish.
We read on Rosh Hashanah about Isaac, Yitzhak, he who laughs. We have a
right to feel joy, to feel triumph. Those who laugh last, laugh best.
To all of the anti-Semites who ever filled our lives with their hatred,
we can say, “We’re still here, and, thank you very much, we’re doing
very well indeed.”

Prejudice, it seems, is a standard fare of life. In his folksong
entitled "National Brotherhood Week," Tom Lehrer sings:
Oh the Protestants hate the Catholics,
and the Catholics hate the Protestants,
and the Hindus hate the Moslems
and everybody hates the Jews.
In this song Lehrer expresses a truism, that hatred for the Jew is
uniquely commonplace. The question is: Why?
What lies behind these millennia of hatred? Why has the undercurrent of
anti-Semitism bubbled and boiled and exploded against Jews everywhere,
time and again throughout history?
Historians propose six possible reasons.
Causes versus Excuses – How Can We Tell the Difference?
When we study such theories, it is important to distinguish between a
"cause" and an "excuse." The difference is not difficult to recognize:
When one thing causes another, if we remove the cause, the effect should
vanish. If, on the other hand, one thing is an excuse for another, then
taking away the excuse will change nothing -- the effect will remain.
A child who is chronically late to school may say in his defense, "But I
don’t have a watch. How do you expect me to get to school in time if I
don’t even have a watch?"
If his parents would buy him a watch and he would still be late for
school, then it will be clear to all that his lack of a watch was just
an excuse for his lateness, not its cause.
Concerning anti-Semitism, if we succeed in identifying the cause of
anti-Semitism, then eliminating that cause should put an end to hatred
for the Jews. However, if we can eliminate that which we have identified
as the cause – and the hatred remains – then we know that what we
thought was a cause was in fact merely an excuse.
The Big Six – Are They Causes or Excuses?
Keep this distinction in mind as we embark on our brief study. As we
touch upon each of the principal explanations for the phenomenon of
anti-Semitism, we will try to ascertain whether it is the cause of the
hatred, or whether it is merely an excuse which people mistake for the
real cause.
Historians and sociologists have come up with numerous theories to
explain the recurrent pattern of antipathy towards Jews. In this
presentation we will explore the six most common theories which have
been set forth as the principal causes of anti-Semitism, hence the term
"The Big Six."
We will examine these "causes," one by one, and discuss the validity of
each.
Economic
We hate Jews because they possess too much wealth and power.
Chosen People
We hate Jews because they arrogantly claim they are the chosen people.
Scapegoat
Jews are a convenient group to single out and blame for our troubles.
Deicide
We hate Jews because they killed Jesus.
Outsiders
We hate Jews because they are different than us.
Racial Theory
We hate Jews because they are an inferior race.
Let us examine these six frequently given reasons and determine if they
are truly causes or excuses.
The Economic Theory of Anti-Semitism
Many people have claimed that Jews as a group possess far too much
wealth and power.
We call this the Economic Theory of Anti-Semitism. It postulates that
Jewish wealth and power arouses the envy of other groups, and this in
turn leads to anti-Semitism.
This theory has surfaced in different guises throughout history. One of
the ways it became popularized was through "The Protocols of the Elders
of Zion."
"The Protocols of the Elders of Zion"
"The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" is a viciously anti-Semitic book.
It is the second most widely published book in history.
The book is a complete fabrication, created by the Russian secret
police. It is an alleged record of the minutes of a secret meeting held
by Jewish leaders. These influential Jews, says the book, were plotting
to take over the entire world.
This fictional account provided an excellent excuse for the Russians to
intensify their campaign of oppression against the Jews. It also
strongly influenced the masses and bolstered the credibility of the myth
that Jews control governments.
Do people today still believe that Jews have some mysterious financial
and organizational advantage over the rest of humanity?

An Ancient Chinese Secret?
A True Story:
A physicist who works for Exxon Corporation, who happens also to be an
Orthodox rabbi, spent well over half a year working on a project in
coordination with a world-renowned scientist whom Exxon had brought in
from China. The two experts developed a good working relationship and
became friendly with one another.
One day the Chinese scientist commented to the Jew, "You know, ever
since we first met I’ve been meaning to ask you a question: Why did you
become a physicist? Why didn’t you just go into business?"
"What kind of question is that?" was the Jewish scientist’s baffled
response. "I became a physicist because I wanted to be a physicist!"
"But aren’t you Jewish?" the Chinese partner persisted.
"Of course I am! What difference does that make?"
"Well," the Chinese scientist patiently explained, "there would be
countless risks involved if I would go into business, but for you it’s
risk-free! Why wouldn’t you go into business?"
"Forgive me, but I’m not following you," said the Jew. "What sort of
business is risk-free?"
"For you? Why, any business! Come on," he said with a conspirational
wink, "we all know you have the Organization behind you."
"Huh? What ‘organization’?" the Jew asked in confusion. "For goodness
sake, man, what are you talking about?"
"Come on," insisted the Chinese scientist. "You know what I mean – the
Organization! Everybody knows that all Jewish men get money from the
Organization when they get married. That’s how all the Jews get started
in business. There’s no risk involved, because if the business fails the
Organization buys out the debt and then funnels even more start-up money
to the Jew. This goes on until the fellow hits upon a business that
prospers!"
No such fantastically endowed international organization exists. Yet the
assumption of this leading scientist demonstrates that the myth of
Jewish access to unlimited wealth is alive and well today.
Does this attitude explain anti-Semitism? Is the Economic Theory a cause
or an excuse for anti-Semitism?
Applying the Litmus Test to the Economic Theory
If we use the Economic Theory to explain the phenomenon of
anti-Semitism, then anti-Semitism becomes purely a class struggle: the
poor versus the rich, the less fortunate versus those with unlimited
financial and organizational backing.
How can we test this explanation?
First, consider universal attitudes towards the rich. Have anti-Semites
persecuted wealthy non-Jews as well?
As soon as the persecution is in any way limited to Jews it is no longer
based upon economics, because at no time in history were Jews the only
wealthy people. As soon as the hater decides to single out wealthy Jews
and ignore wealthy non-Jews, economics no longer can be the cause for
his hatred.
Second, if we remove the element of wealth and power from the Jews, does
the anti-Semitism vanish?
Case Study: The Warsaw Ghetto
The Jews who lived in the shtetels of Poland and Russia between the
seventeenth and the twentieth centuries were poor and powerless, utterly
lacking any form of influence whatsoever. Yet they were hated. Often
they were persecuted and subjected to unspeakable torments. On many
occasions entire villages were ransacked and their Jewish inhabitants
massacred in cold blood. Under those circumstances, anti-Semitism did
not distinguish between rich and poor, between strong and weak, between
powerful and powerless.
Likewise, anti-Semites in the middle ages initiated countless pogroms
against Jews without first investigating their bank accounts or
investment portfolios.
When the Nazis liquidated the Warsaw Ghetto there were no Jewish
businesses to destroy. In fact, the impoverished conditions under which
the Jews there lived were appalling. The Jews in the ghetto could not
have been thought of as "rich" by anyone’s standards, and yet the Nazis
felt they had to be eliminated.
Poor Jews have always been hated just as rich Jews have been. When a Jew
meets with financial success, it may set the anti-Semite’s teeth on
edge, but the Jew’s success clearly is not what created the anti-Semite.
Money therefore cannot be the cause of anti-Semitism.
How about power? Can it be the cause of anti-Semitism?
The Fugu Plan
If someone who is rich and powerful comes to you for a favor, you don’t
persecute him – you help him. Having such a person indebted to you is a
great insurance policy.
There was one nation that did treat the Jews as if they were powerful
and rich. The Japanese never had much exposure to Jews, and knew very
little about them. In 1919 Japan fought alongside the anti-Semitic White
Russians against the Communists. At that time the White Russians
introduced the Japanese to the book, "The Protocols of the Elders of
Zion."
The Japanese studied the book and, according to all accounts, naively
believed its propaganda. Their reaction was immediate and forceful --
they formulated a plan to encourage Jewish settlement and investment
into Manchuria. People with such wealth and power as the Jews possess,
the Japanese determined, are exactly the type of people with whom we
want to do business!
The Japanese called their plan for Jewish settlement "The Fugu Plan."
The "fugu" is a highly poisonous blowfish. After the toxin-containing
organs are painstakingly removed, it is used as a food in Japan, and is
considered an exquisite delicacy. If it is not prepared carefully,
however, its poison can kill a person.
The Japanese saw the Jews as a nation with highly valuable potential,
but, as with the fugu, in order to take advantage of that potential,
they had to be extremely careful. Otherwise, the Japanese thought, the
plan would backfire and the Jews would annihilate Japan with their
awesome power.
The Japanese were allies of the Nazis, yet they allowed thousands of
European refugees – including the entire Mirrer Yeshivah – to enter
Shanghai and Kobe during World War II. They welcomed these Jews into
their country, not because they bore any great love for the Jews, but
because they believed that Jews had access to enormous resources and
amazingly influential power which could greatly benefit Japan. This is
all detailed in the book, " The Fugu Plan " by Marvin Tokayer.
If anti-Semites truly believe that Jews rule the world, why don’t they
all relate to Jews like the Japanese did?
The fact that Jews are generally treated as outcasts proves that people
do not really believe that Jews are anywhere near as wealthy or powerful
as they claim. It proves that anti-Semites do not take their own
propaganda seriously.
Whatever Happened to Jewish Power?
If there is any truth to the notion that Jews control governments, why
couldn’t the Jews get even one country to accept the refugees who were
struggling to escape the European inferno during the Holocaust? If
"World Jewry" is so powerful and wields such political influence, surely
at least one government would have agreed to take them in as refugees
and allowed them to stay until the end of the war...
The film "Voyage of the Damned" dramatically brings home the point that
when government after government buries its head in the sand while the
wholesale slaughter of Jews goes unchecked, the claim that Jews control
governments rings hollow and becomes painfully absurd.
Is Black Gold Thicker Than Milk and Honey?
Those who speak of Jewish power as a world problem have never acted as
if they really believed Jews had any power.
Anyone who really believes someone is rich and powerful treats that
person with kid gloves. As a case in point, the Arab countries initially
did not find favor in the eyes of the Twentieth-Century world at large.
However, because the world needed Arab oil, the world appeased the
Arabs. Think about it -- when is the last time the United Nations issued
a proclamation condemning a member of OPEC other than Iraq?
If anyone really believes that the Jews are the possessors of tremendous
power and wealth, why do they not treat Jews in accordance with this
belief? They should treat Jews with at least as much respect as the
Japanese once did...
So money and power are not the cause of anti-Semitism. Jewish financial
success may make an anti-Semite gnash his teeth, but that’s not what
made him an anti-Semite in the first place. Poor Jews have been just as
hated as rich Jews.
Obviously, the economic reason for anti-Semitism is really an excuse.

Persecution of Jews by Christians:
Initial persecution of Jews was along religious lines. Persecution would
cease if the person converted to Christianity.
306: The church Synod of Elvira banned marriages, sexual
intercourse and community contacts between Christians and Jews. 3,4
315: Constantine published the Edict of Milan which extended
religious tolerance to Christians. Jews lost many rights with this
edict. They were no longer permitted to live in Jerusalem, or to
proselytize.
325: The Council of Nicea decided to separate the celebration of
Easter from the Jewish Passover. They stated: "For it is unbecoming
beyond measure that on this holiest of festivals we should follow the
customs of the Jews. Henceforth let us have nothing in common with this
odious people...We ought not, therefore, to have anything in common with
the Jews...our worship follows a...more convenient course...we desire

339: Converting to Judaism became a criminal offense.

367 - 376: St. Hilary of Poitiers referred to Jews as a perverse
people who God has cursed forever. St. Ephroem refers to synagogues as

379-395: Emperor Theodosius the Great permitted the destruction of
synagogues if it served a religious purpose. Christianity became the
state religion of the Roman Empire at this time.
380: The bishop of Milan was responsible for the burning of a
synagogue; he referred to it as "an act pleasing to God."
415: The Bishop of Alexandria, St. Cyril, expelled the Jews from
that Egyptian city.
415: St. Augustine wrote "The true image of the Hebrew is Judas
Iscariot, who sells the Lord for silver. The Jew can never understand
the Scriptures and forever will bear the guilt for the death of Jesus."
418: St. Jerome, who created the Vulgate translation of the Bible
wrote of a synagogue: "If you call it a brothel, a den of vice, the
Devil's refuge, Satan's fortress, a place to deprave the soul, an abyss

489 - 519: Christian mobs destroyed the synagogues in Antioch,
Daphne (near Antioch) and Ravenna.
528: Emperor Justinian (527-564) passed the Justinian Code. It
prohibited Jews from building synagogues, reading the Bible in Hebrew,
assemble in public, celebrate Passover before Easter, and testify
against Christians in court. 3
535: The "Synod of Claremont decreed that Jews could not hold
public office or have authority over Christians." 3
538: The 3rd and 4th Councils of Orleans prohibited Jews from
appearing in public during the Easter season. Canon XXX decreed that

561: The bishop of Uzes expelled Jews from his diocese in France.
612: Jews were not allowed to own land, to be farmers or enter

613: Very serious persecution began in Spain. Jews were given the
options of either leaving Spain or converting to Christianity. Jewish
children over 6 years of age were taken from their parents and given a
Christian education
692: Cannnon II of the Quinisext Council stated: "Let no one in the
priestly order nor any layman eat the unleavened bread of the Jews, nor
have any familiar intercourse with them, nor summon them in illness, nor
receive medicines from them, nor bathe with them; but if anyone shall
take in hand to do so, if he is a cleric, let him be deposed, but if a
layman, let him be cut off." 5
694: The 17th Church Council of Toledo, Spain defined Jews as the
serfs of the prince. This was based, in part, on the beliefs by
Chrysostom, Origen, Jerome, and other Church Fathers that God punished
the Jews with perpetual slavery because of their responsibility for the
execution of Jesus. 5
722: Leo III outlawed Judaism. Jews were baptized against their
will.
855: Jews were exiled from Italy
1050: The Synod of Narbonne prohibited Christians from living in
the homes of Jews.
1078: "Pope Gregory VII decreed that Jews could not hold office or

1078: The Synod of Gerona forced Jews to pay church taxes
1096: The First Crusade was launched in this year. Although the
prime goal of the crusades was to liberate Jerusalem from the Muslims,
Jews were a second target. As the soldiers passed through Europe on the
way to the Holy Land, large numbers of Jews were challenged:
"Christ-killers, embrace the Cross or die!" 12,000 Jews in the Rhine
Valley alone were killed in the first Crusade. This behavior continued
for 8 additional crusades until the 9th in 1272.
1099: The Crusaders forced all of the Jews of Jerusalem into a
central synagogue and set it on fire. Those who tried to escape were
forced back into the burning building.
1121: Jews were exiled from Flanders (now part of present-day
Belgium)
1130: Some Jews in London allegedly killed a sick man. The Jewish
people in the city were required to pay 1 million marks as compensation.
1146: The Second Crusade began. A French Monk, Rudolf, called for
the destruction of the Jews.
1179: Canon 24 of the Third Lateran Council stated: "Jews should be
slaves to Christians and at the same time treated kindly due of
humanitarian considerations." Canon 26 stated that "the testimony of
Christians against Jews is to be preferred in all causes where they use
their own witnesses against Christians." 7
1180: The French King of France, Philip Augustus, arbitrarily
seized all Jewish property and expelled the Jews from the country. There
was no legal justification for this action. They were allowed to sell
all movable possessions, but their land and houses were stolen by the
king.
1189: Jews were persecuted in England. The Crown claimed all Jewish
possessions. Most of their houses were burned.
1205: Pope Innocent III wrote to the archbishops of Sens and
Paris that "the Jews, by their own guilt, are consigned to perpetual
servitude because they crucified the Lord...As slaves rejected by God,
in whose death they wickedly conspire, they shall by the effect of this
very action, recognize themselves as the slaves of those whom Christ's
death set free..."
1215: The Fourth Lateran Council approved canon laws
requiring that "Jews and Muslims shall wear a special dress." They also
had to wear a badge in the form of a ring. This was to enable them to be
easily distinguished from Christians. This practice later spread to
other countries.
1227: The Synod of Narbonne required Jews to wear an oval
badge. This requirement was reinstalled during the 1930's by Hitler, who
changed the oval badge to a Star of David.
1229: The Spanish inquisition starts. Later, in 1252, Pope
Innocent IV authorizes the use of torture by the Inquisitors.
1236: Pope Gregory ordered that church leaders in England,
France, Portugal and Spain confiscate Jewish books on the first Saturday
of Lent. 1
1259: A "synod of the archdiocese in Mainz ordered Jews to
wear yellow badges." 1
1261: Duke Henry III of Brabant, Belgium, stated in his will
that "Jews...must be expelled from Brabant and totally annihilated so
that not a single one remains, except those who are willing to trade,
like all other tradesmen, without money-lending and usury." 2
1267: The Synod of Vienna ordered Jews to wear horned hats.
Thomas Aquinas said that Jews should live in perpetual servitude.
1290: Jews are exiled from England. About 16,000 left the
country.
1298: Jews were persecuted in Austria, Bavaria and
Franconia. 140 Jewish communities were destroyed; more than 100,000 Jews
were killed over a 6 month period.
1306: 100,000 Jews are exiled from France. They left with
only the clothes on their backs, and food for only one day.
1320: 40,000 French shepherds went to Palestine on the
Shepherd Crusade. On the way, 140 Jewish communities were destroyed.
1321: In Guienne, France, Jews were accused of having
incited criminals to poison wells. 5,000 Jews were burned alive, at the
stake.
1338: The councilors of Freiburg banned the performance of
anti-Jewish scenes from the town's passion play because of the lethal
bloody reactions against Jews which followed the performances. 9
1347 +: Ships from the Far East carried rats into
Mediterranean ports. The rats carried the Black Death. At first, fleas
spread the disease from the rats to humans. As the plague worsened, the
germs spread from human to human. In five years, the death toll had
reached 25 million. England took 2 centuries for its population levels
to recover from the plague. People looked around for someone to blame.
They noted that a smaller percentage of Jews than Christians caught the
disease. This was undoubtedly due to the Jewish sanitary and dietary
laws, which had been preserved from Old Testament times. Rumors
circulated that Satan was protecting the Jews and that they were paying
back the Devil by poisoning wells used by Christians. The solution was
to torture, murder and burn the Jews. "In Bavaria...12,000
Jews...perished; in the small town of Erfurt...3,000; Rue Brulיe...2,000
Jews; near Tours, an immense trench was dug, filled with blazing wood
and in a single day 160 Jews were burned." (5) In Strausberg 2,000 Jews
were burned. In Maintz 6,000 were killed...; in Worms 400..." 3
1354: 12,000 Jews were executed in Toledo.
1374: An epidemic of possession broke out in the lower Rhine
region of what is now Germany. People were seen "dancing, jumping and
[engaging in] wild raving." This was triggered by enthusiastic revels on
St. John's Day - an Christianized version of an ancient Pagan seasonal
day of celebration which was still observed by the populace. The
epidemic spread throughout the Rhine and in much of the Netherlands and
Germany. Crowds of 500 or more dancers would be overcome together.
Exorcisms were tried, but failed. Pilgrimages to the shrine of St. Vitus
were tried, but this only seemed to exacerbate the problem. Finally, the
rumor spread that God was angry because Christians had been excessively
tolerant towards the Jews. God had cursed Europe as He did Saul when he
showed mercy towards God's enemies in the Old Testament. Jews "were
plundered, tortured and murdered by tens of thousands." The epidemic
finally burned itself out two centuries later, in the late 16th century.

1391 : Jewish persecutions begin in Seville and in 70 other
Jewish communities throughout Spain.
1394 : Jews were exiled, for the second time, from France.
1431 +: The Council of Basel "forbade Jews to go to
universities, prohibited them from acting as agents in the conclusion of
contracts between Christians, and required that they attend church
sermons." 5
1434: "Jewish men in Augsburg had to sew yellow buttons to
their clothes. Across Europe, Jews were forced to wear a long
undergarment, an overcoat with a yellow patch, bells and tall pointed
yellow hats with a large button on them." 1
1453 : The Franciscan monk, Capistrano, persuaded the King
of Poland to terminate all Jewish civil rights.
1478: Spanish Jews had been heavily persecuted from the 14th
century. Many had converted to Christianity. The Spanish Inquisition was
set up by the Church in order to detect insincere conversions. Laws were
passed that prohibited the descendants of Jews or Muslims from attending
university, joining religious orders, holding public office, or entering
any of a long list of professions.
1492 : Jews were given the choice of being baptized as
Christians or be banished from Spain. 300,000 left Spain penniless. Many
migrated to Turkey, where they found tolerance among the Muslims. Others
converted to Christianity but often continued to practice Judaism in
secret.
1497: Jews were banished from Portugal. 20 thousand left the
country rather than be baptized as Christians.
1523: Martin Luther distributed his essay "That Jesus Was
Born a Jew. " He hoped that large numbers of Jews would convert to
Christianity. They didn't, and he began to write and preach hatred
against them. Luther has been condemned in recent years for being
extremely antisemitic. The charge has some merit; however he was
probably typical of most Christians during his era.
1516: The Governor of the Republic of Venice decided that
Jews would be permitted to live only in one area of the city. It was
located in the South Girolamo parish and was called the "Ghetto Novo."
This was the first ghetto in Europe. Hitler made use of the concept in
the 1930's.
1539: A passion play was forbidden in Rome because it
prompted violent attacks against the city's Jewish residents. 9
1540: Jews were exiled from Naples.
1543: In his 20's, Martin Luther, had expected Jews to
convert to Christianity in large numbers. Distressed by their
reluctance, he developed a hatred for Jews, as expressed in his letters
to Rev. Spalatin in 1514, when he was 31 years of age. He wrote:
"I have come to the conclusion that the Jews will always
curse and blaspheme God and his King Christ, as all the prophets have
predicted....For they are thus given over by the wrath of God to
reprobation, that they may become incorrigible, as Ecclesiastes says,
for every one who is incorrigible is rendered worse rather than better
by correction." 6
In 1543, he wrote "On the Jews and their lies, On Shem
Hamphoras" :
"...eject them forever from this country. For, as we have
heard, God's anger with them is so intense that gentle mercy will only
tend to make them worse and worse, while sharp mercy will reform them
but little. Therefore, in any case, away with them!...What then shall we
Christians do with this damned, rejected race of Jews?
First, their synagogues or churches should be set on
fire,...
Secondly, their homes should likewise be broken down
and destroyed... They ought to be put under one roof or in a stable,
like Gypsies.
Thirdly, they should be deprived of their prayer
books and Talmuds in which such idolatry, lies, cursing and blasphemy
are taught.
Fourthly, their rabbis must be forbidden under threat
of death to teach any more...
Fifthly, passport and traveling privileges should be
absolutely forbidden to the Jews...
Sixthly, they ought to be stopped from usury. All
their cash and valuables of silver and gold ought to be taken from them
and put aside for safe keeping...
Seventhly, let the young and strong Jews and Jewesses
be given the flail, the axe, the hoe, the spade, the distaff, and
spindle and let them earn their bread by the sweat of their noses as in
enjoined upon Adam's children...
To sum up, dear princes and nobles who have Jews in
your domains, if this advice of mine does not suit you, then find a
better one so that you and we may all be free of this insufferable
devilish burden - the Jews." 7
1550: Jews were exiled from Genoa and Venice.
1555-JUL-12: A Roman Catholic Papal bull, "Cum
nimis absurdum," required Jews to wear badges, and live in ghettos. They
were not allowed to own property outside the ghetto. Living conditions
were dreadful: over 3,000 people were forced to live in about 8 acres of
land. Women had to wear a yellow veil or scarf; men had to wear a piece
of yellow cloth on their hat. 8
1582: Jews were expelled from Holland.
1648-9: Chmielnicki Bogdan led an uprising
against Polish rule in the Ukraine. The secondary goal of Bogdan and his
followers was to exterminate all Jews in the country. The massacre began
with the slaughter of about 6,000 Jews in Nemirov. Other major mass
murders occurred in Tulchin, Polonnoye, Volhynia, Bar, Lvov, etc. Jewish
records estimate that a total of 100,000 Jews were murdered and 300
communities destroyed.

Medicine in Europe during the Middle Ages found itself restricted by the
Christian Church. The church taught that it was irreligious to seek a
natural cure from a physician when one could obtain supernatural help
from a priest. Some church leaders criticized medical schools because
they taught that diseases and disorders came from natural means and not
from the evil efforts of Satan.
With medicine in such ill repute among Christians, much of the
leadership by the 10th century was provided by Jews and Muslim scholars.
Jews were largely responsible for founding the medical Schools at
Salerno and Montpellier in the 10th century.
Pope Eugene IV, Nicholas V and Calixtus III forbade Christians from
using the services of a Jewish physician. The Trullanean Council in the
8th century; Béziers Council & Alby Council in the 13th century; Avignon
council & Salamanca Council in the 14th century, the Synod of Bamberg
in the 15th century; the Council of Avignon in the 16th century, etc.
also ordered Christians to not seek healing from Jewish physicians and
surgeons. This continued even into the 17th century when the city of
Hall in Würtemberg (in what is now Germany) granted some privileges to a
Jewish physician "on account of his admirable experience and skill." The
clergy of Hall complained that "it were better to die with Christ than
to be cured by a Jew doctor aided by the devil."
The conversion from religiously-based to racially-based persecution:
Prior to 1800 CE: Persecution was directed at followers of Judaism
because of their religious beliefs; it has been referred to as
anti-Judaism. CE, Jews could escape oppression by converting to
Christianity, and being baptized. The Christian church taught in past
centuries that all Jews (past, present and future) were responsible for
Jesus' death. The Church also believed that some Jews must be allowed to
live, because the biblical book of Revelation indicated that they had a
role to play in the "end times." They concluded that it was acceptable
to make Jews' lives quite miserable.
Since about 1800: "...Nationalism became a dominant value in the Western
and Arab worlds...antisemitism increasingly focused on the Jews'
peoplehood and nationhood." 15 Persecution became a form of racism, and
has generally been called "anti-Semitism" -- a word "created by an
antisemite, Wilhelm Marr [in 1879]. Marr's intention was to replace the
German word Judenhass (Jew-hatred) with a term that would make
Jew-haters sound less vulgar and even somewhat scientific." 15 The word,
(variously spelled antisemite, anti-Semite and anti-semite). It is not a
particularly good choice, because the root word "Semitic" refers to a
group of languages, not to a single language or to a race, people or
nation. However, it is in near-universal usage.
Antisemitism: Persecution of Jews along Racial Lines:
Subsequent attacks against Jews tended to be racially motivated. They
were perpetrated primarily by the state. The Jewish people were viewed
as a separate people or race.
1806: A French Jesuit Priest, Abbe Barruel, had written a treatise
blaming the Masonic Order for the French Revolution. He later issued a
letter alleging that Jews, not the Masons were the guilty party. This
triggered a belief in an international Jewish conspiracy in Germany,
Poland and some other European countries later in the 19th century.
1846 - 1878: Pope Pius IX restored all of the previous restrictions
against the Jews within the Vatican state. All Jews under Papal control
were confined to Rome's ghetto - the last one in Europe until the Nazi
era. On 2000-SEP-3, Pope John Paul II beautified Pius IX; this is the
last step before sainthood. He explained: "Beatifying a son of the
church does not celebrate particular historic choices that he has made,
but rather points him out for imitation and for veneration for his
virtue."
1858: Edgardo Mortara was kidnapped, at the age of six, from his
Jewish family by Roman Catholic officials after they found out that a
maid had secretly baptized him. He was not returned to his family but
was raised a Catholic. He eventually became a priest.
1873: The term "antisemitism" is first used in a pamphlet by
Wilhelm Marr called "Jewry's Victory over Teutonism."
1881: Alexander II of Russia was assassinated by radicals. The Jews
were blamed. About 200 individual pogroms against the Jews followed.
("Pogrom" is a Russian word meaning "devastation" or "riot." In Russia,
a pogrom was typically a mob riot against Jewish individuals, shops,
homes or businesses. They were often supported and even organized by the
government.) Thousands of Jews became homeless and impoverished. The few
who were charged with offenses generally received very light sentences.

1893: "...anti-Semitic parties won sixteen seats in the German
Reichstag." 2
1894: Captain Alfred Dreyfus, an officer on the French general
staff, was convicted of treason. The evidence against him consisted of a
piece of paper from his wastebasket with another person's handwriting,
and papers forged by antisemitic officers. He received a life sentence
on Devil's Island, off the coast of South America. The French government
was aware that a Major Esterhazy was actually guilty. 3 The church,
government and army united to suppress the truth. Writer Emile Zola and
politician Jean Jaurès fought for justice and human rights. After 10
years, the French government fell and Drefus was declared totally
innocent. The Dreyfus Affair was world-wide news for years. It motivated
Journalist Theodor Herzl to write a book in 1896: "The Jewish State: A
Modern Solution to the Jewish Question." The book led to the founding of
the Zionist movement which fought for a Jewish Homeland. A half century
later, the state of Israel was born.
1903: At Easter, government agents organized an anti-Jewish pogrom
in Kishinev, Moldova, Russia. The local newspaper published a series of
inflammatory articles. A Christian child was discovered murdered and a
young Christian woman at the Jewish Hospital committed suicide. Jews
were blamed for the deaths. Violence ensured. The 5,000 soldiers in the
town did nothing. When the smoke cleared, 49 Jews had been killed, 500
were injured; 700 homes looted and destroyed, 600 businesses and shops
looted, 2000 families left homeless. Later, it was discovered that the
child had been murdered by its relatives and the suicide was unrelated
to the Jews. 4
1905: The Okhrana, the Russian secret police in the reign of Czar
Nicholas II, converted an earlier antisemitic novel into a document
called the "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion." 16 It was
published privately in 1897. A Russian Orthodox priest, Sergius Nilus,
published them publicly in 1905. It was promoted as the record of
"secret rabbinical conferences whose aim was to subjugate and
exterminate the Christians." 5 The Protocols were used by the Okhrana in
a propaganda campaign that was associated with massacres of the Jews.
These were the Czarist Pogroms of 1905.
1915: 600,000 Jews were forcibly moved from the western borders of
Russia towards the interior. About 100,000 died of exposure or
starvation.
1917: "In the civil war following the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917,
the reactionary White Armies made extensive use of the Protocols to
incite widespread slaughters of Jews." 5 Two hundred thousand Jews were
murdered in the Ukraine alone.
1920: The Protocols reach England and the United States. They are
exposed as a forgery, but are widely circulated. Henry Ford sponsored a
study of international activities of Jews. This led to a series of
antisemitic articles in the Dearborn Independent, which were published
in a book, "The International Jew." The Protocols were sold on
Wal-Mart's online bookstore until they were removed on 2004-SEP-21.
1920: The defeat of Germany in World War I and the continuing
economic difficulties were blamed in that country on the "Jewish
influence." One antisemitic poster has been preserved from that era. 6
It shows a German, presumably Christian woman, a male Jew with distorted
facial features, a coffin and the word "Deutschland" (Germany)
1920's, 1930's: Hitler had published in Mein Kampf in 1925,
writing: "Today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will
of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am
fighting for the work of the Lord." The Protocols are used by the Nazis
to whip up public hatred of the Jews in the 1930's. Widespread pogroms
occur in Greece, Hungary, Mexico, Poland, Rumania, and the USSR. Radio
programs by many conservative American clergy, both Roman Catholic and
Protestant, frequently attacked Jews. Reverend Fr. Charles E Coughlin
was one of the best known. "In the 1930's, radio audiences heard him
rail against the threat of Jews to America's economy and defend Hitler's
treatment of Jews as justified in the fight against communism." (12)
Other conservative Christian leaders, such as Frank Norris and John
Straton supported the Jews. 7
Discrimination against Jews in North America is widespread. Many
universities set limits on the maximum number of Jewish students that
they would accept. Harvard accepted all students on the basis of merit
until after World War I when the percentage of Jewish students
approached 15%. At that time they installed an informal quota system. In
1941, Princeton had fewer than 2% Jews in their student body. Jews were
routinely barred from country clubs, prestigious neighborhoods, etc. 8
1933: Hitler took power in Germany. On APR-1, Julius Streicher
organized a one-day boycott of all Jewish owned busienss in the country.
This was the start of continuous oppression by the Nazis culminating in
the Holocaust (a.k.a. Shoah). Jews "were barred from civil service,
legal professions and universities, were not allowed to teach in schools
and could not be editors of newspapers." 2 Two years later, Jews were no
longer considered citizens.
1934: Various laws were enacted in Germany to force Jews out of
schools and professions.
1935: The Nazis passed the Nuremberg Laws restricting citizenship
to those of "German or related blood." Jews became stateless.
1936: Cardinal Hloud of Poland urged Catholics to boycott Jewish
businesses.
1938: On NOV-9, the Nazi government in Germany sent storm troopers,
the SS and the Hitler Youth on a pogrom that killed 91 Jews, injured
hundreds, burned 177 synagogues and looted 7,500 Jewish stores. Broken
glass could be seen everywhere; the glass gave this event its name of
Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. 9
1938: Hitler brought back century-old church law, ordering all Jews
to wear a yellow Star of David as identification. A few hundred thousand
Jews are allowed to leave Germany after they give all of their assets to
the government.
1939: The Holocaust, the Shoah -- the systematic extermination of
Jews in Germany -- begins. The process only ended in 1945 with the
conclusion of World War II. Approximately 6 million Jews (1.5 million of
them children), 400 thousand Roma (Gypsies) and others were slaughtered.
Some were killed by death squads; others were slowly killed in trucks
with carbon monoxide; others were gassed in large groups in Auschwitz,
Dacau, Sobibor, Treblinka and other extermination camps. Officially, the
holocaust was described by the Nazis as subjecting Jews "to special
treatment" or as a "solution of the Jewish question." Gold taken from
the teeth of the victims was recycled; hair was used in the manufacture
of mattresses. In the Buchenwald extermination camp, lampshades were
made out of human skin; however, this appears to be an isolated
incident. A rumor spread that Jewish corpses were routinely converted
into soap. However, the story appears to be false. 10
1940: The Vichy government of France collaborated with Nazi Germany
by freezing about 80,000 Jewish bank accounts. During the next four
years, they deported about 76,000 Jews to Nazi death camps; only about
2,500 survived. It was only in 1995 that a French president, Jacques
Chirac, "was able to admit that the state bore a heavy share of
responsibility in the mass round-ups and deportations of Jews, as well
as in the property and asset seizures that were carried out with the
active help of the Vichy regime." 11
1941: The Holocaust Museum in Washington DC estimates that 13,000
Jews died on 1941-JUN-19 during a pogrom in Bucharest, Romania. It was
ordered by the pro-Nazi Romanian regime of Marshal Ion Antonescu. The
current government has admitted that this atrocity happened, but most
Romanians continue to deny that the Jews were killed on orders from
their own government. 12
1941: Polish citizens in Jedwabne in northeastern Poland killed
hundreds of Jews, by either beating them to death or burning them alive
in a barn. According to the Associated Press: "The role played by Polish
citizens was suppressed for nearly six decades until publication of a
book by a Polish emigre historian, Jan Tomasz Gross. After release of
the book in 2000, the Polish government launched an investigation. 'The
role of the Poles was decisive in conducting the criminal act,'
[prosecutor Radoslaw] Ignatiew, said. The book, 'Neighbours,' sparked
national soul-searching among Poles, many of whom could not believe that
anybody but the Nazis would have committed the atrocity." 13
1942: The Nazi leaders of Germany, at the Wannsee conference,
decided on"the final solution of the Jewish question" which was the
attempt to exterminate every Jew in Europe. From JUL-28 to 31, almost
18,000 Russian inhabitants of the Minsk ghetto in what is now Belarus
were exterminated. This was in addition to 5,000 to 15,000 who had been
massacred in earlier pogroms in that city. This was just one of many
such pogroms during World War II. 14
1945: The Shoah (Holocaust) ended as the Allied Forces over-ran the
Nazi death camps.
1946: Even though World War II ended the year before, antisemitic
pogroms continued, particularly in Poland, with the deaths of many Jews.
