Hello,
My wife and I are Jewish and we are expecting a baby girl in a few
months. We want give her a name of Hebrew origin that starts with a
"Y", after my grandmother. One name that has come up is Yasmine. Most
web sites say Yasmine is of Persian origin, but other web sites state
that Yasmine is a very popular name in Israel and has a Hebrew origin.
We want to be true to our heritage. Can anyone shed some light on
this?
Thank you

We have girls named Yasmine in our community, but they're Persian Jews!
The name does seem to originate in Persian (see
http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=jasmine). I means Jasmine.
The fact that it isn't Hebrew doesn't mean that it isn't a venerable
Jewish name, since many Persian loan words entered the Hebrew language
at least 2500 years ago, but if you are set on an authentic Hebrew
name, there are many baby naming books specifically for Jewish names.
The one I remember consulting at the time is Alfred Kolatch's "The
Complete Dictionary of English and Hebrew First Names". Also take a
look at http://www.hebrewbabynames.com/
