A blast from the past, written by a Hebraically semi-literate
journalist.
--------------------------------

August 6, 1929

The appointment of special assistant district attorneys in the
counties of the state of New York where considerable Jewish groups
live for the enforcement of the New York State Kosher Law was asked in
a resolution adopted at a conference of Kashruth boards in Greater New
York. [...]

Under the provisions of the New York Kosher Law all meat shops having
on their windows the sign “Bosher Kosher” (kosher meat) must sell only
kosher meat. Those who display the sign “kosher” and sell non-kosher
meat are guilty of fraud. The difference between the Hebrew letter
equivalent to the English “B” and “K” are indistinguishable from a
distance. Mr. Glassberg, who sold non-kosher meat, it was charged,
displayed on the windows of his shop the sign “Bosher Bosher,” (meat,
meat), instead of the prescribed “Bosher Kosher.” (kosher meat).
Glassberg was released on bail pending trial for fraud.

True. So what did they look like up close?

I can't even distinguish meet and meat from a distance. Or kosher and
farmer.

Meat, of course, is bosor, not bosher. The s and sh look identical
from a distance AND up close, without nikud, but someone should have
told the journalist how to pronounce the word.

Compare this with an article I'll soon post about the trash show "60
Minutes" which misstated the law in a 15 minute story where the law was
the crux of the story. Someone should have told the reporter the law,
and I'm sure someone did. A lot worse than this guy's pronunciation
mistake.

I'm almost surprised they didnt' settle for an agreement he wouldn't do
it anymore. He must have really messed up a lot of customers. At
least no one denied what kosher was in those days.
