"Trader Joe's is a 35-year-old private company owned by a group of German
investors. Hoover's Online estimates the company's sales at $1.9 billion for
2001."
Not sure if I would want to buy any groceries there for reasons having
nothing to do with hadash and yoshon...

According to Hoovers:
When it comes to grocery chains, Trader Joe's isn't your average Joe.
With more than 175 stores in 15 mostly West and East Coast states, the
company offers upscale grocery fare such as health foods, organic
produce, and nutritional supplements. To keep costs down, its stores
have no service departments and average about 9,000 sq. ft. (and thus
have a more limited selection than typical supermarkets). The
company's specialty is its line of more than 2000 private-label
products, including beverages, soup, snacks, and frozen items. Started
by Joe Coulombe as a Los Angeles convenience store chain in 1958, the
company was bought in 1979 by German billionaires Karl and Theo
Albrecht, who also own the ALDI food chain.

In our neck of the woods, its the closest place which carries hechshered
cheese and Empire chicken. So for a quick - "oops, I need a chicken for
tonight" or pizza fixings, it is our store of choice.
They also have a decent stock of hechshered dry goods, and a pamphlet
listing all their koshers items, all the different hechshers, their
sponsoring organizations, and the organizations addresses. Very helpful.

I thought the Albrecht brothers' names were Sieg and Heil. In any case, ALDI
and its owners are a keystone of the German economy. I would not buy
anything at any store owned by them, given the choice.

In our weekly shul bulletin, there was the following announcement:
: The following stores have been researched by the Rabbinical
: Council and are approved for buying chometz immediately after
: Pesach: Giant, Trader Joe's, Sutton Place Gourmet, Safeway,
: Shoppers Food Warehouse, CVS, RiteAid, Wal Mart, K-Mart,
: Target, Costco, Fresh /Fields/Whole Foods and Super /Fresh
I have no way of knowing if those are on there because the entire
company is approved, or if individual stores near the shul are approved,
but that's what those of us in Washington DC were told.
Address to the bulletin is at http://www.yise.org/shabshorts.pdf if
you'd like to confirm. :-)

Well, feel free to boycott if you please, but I think that there are
countries which are more nefarious to Jewish interests worldwide than
Germany at this time. In any case, they're fine vis-a-vis Hametz, and
their selection of products with hashgaha is remarkable given their
size (I've described them as "the museum of bizarre hashgaha"
before).

"Who owns Trader Joe's, anyway? Coulombe sold out in 1979 and retired
in 1988. Although the chain preserved his hokey South Pacific décor
and still touts the chain's goods in its eccentric "fearless
flyers"--illustrated with 19th century pen and ink clip art, no
less--it treats the identities of its new owners as some sort of state
secret. When pressed, Gorski says they are European and that she's met
them. Clippings from the Los Angeles Times and U.S. News & World
Report identify the owners as the Albrechts, a German family that owns
about 10 percent of Albertson's, a U.S. supermarket chain."

"Trader Joe's step into the market will also increase the regional
presence of the company's owners, the reclusive brothers Karl and Theo
Albrecht -- who last year were ranked as the fourth-richest people in
the world by Forbes magazine.
"Based in Germany, the Albrechts have built a $27 billion grocery
empire through their discounter, Aldi. According to Forbes, there are
now more than 4,000 Aldi supermarkets in 11 countries, amassing annual
revenue of $27 billion.
"The Albrechts bought the Trader Joe's chain in 1979 from original
owner Joe Coulombe, and also own a stake in the Albertson's grocery
chain based in the West."

I don't know if it's still the case. That's the best I could find.
As of midway through last year, they were owned by those German
brothers. Are the Albrechts Jewish? The only thing I could find on
line that gave any indication was the anti-semitic JewWatch dot com
site, which claims that they are. But you can assume that they're
just ranting.
You can probably buy chametz there, but CYLOR.

If you don't have a choice, it is one thing. If you do, there is no reason
to contribute to the German economy.

I don't know who the owners are, but they do what they can to help in
Kashrut issues. The are proud of the number of kosher items.

That is a good call. I found some real interesting items there which
would have been great for me since I travel quite a bit to remote
locations. But, when I checked into the reliability of the Hashgacha from
India, I was told NOT recommended at this time.
