So there are a bunch of Planters nuts with the OU, but the Dry Roasted
Peanuts have a K. I can't figure out what could be wrong with these
nuts that they wouldn't get a hechsher like so many other Planters
products. Does anyone here have some insight about it?
Thanks,
Lisa
Who does that K belong to? Could it just be that another agency certifies
the factory that makes these nuts? Dry Roasted should be the EASIEST of the
nuts to certify, unless they use some chemical in place of oil.

There are many potential kashrus issues concerned with roasted nuts.
See http://www.crcweb.org/Articles/BNuts.htm
Because food technology is so advanced these days, even the simplest
products can have significant kashrut concerns.

Look at the ingredients. It contains gelatin. The OK refused to certify
all planters that were kosher, but when they put the gelatin in and put
plain K, the OK dropped planters altogether. The OU then took the
rmainder of Planters that was kosher.

Huh. It's pretty chutzpadik to put a plain K on after being told that
the gelatin makes it non-kosher. I'm not surprised that the OK
dropped them, but I guess I am a little surprised that the OU was
willing to step in.
Thanks for the info. But I'm bummed. Does anyone know if there are
any kosher brands of dry roasted peanuts? Maybe a company that uses
fake gelatin or something?

Yaakov K, waiting for SCJR :-,
You can make your own. buy raw peanuts and toss with a little oil and a
mixture of spices and bake for 15 or so minutes. There are lots of recipes
online, and it's very easy. I like pecans with chili powder, cumin, garlic
powder, salt, and sugar.

Almost every company other than Planters is Kosher. (Planters unsalted
dry roasted are kosher). Most dry roasted are just nuts and salt.
Planters are highly seasoned.
I believe Fisher's are OU. Many store brands also have
hechsherim. Gelatin is mostly not used in dry roasted nuts anyway.

My first thought is "Yeah, I'm w/you."
My next thought is, "Well, maybe they're doing it for people who have health
cvoncerns.
Then my next thought is "Get a different mark - that's chutzapdik."
