... but wrong as to the reason why Carter "apologized":

http://jta.org/news/article/2009/12/22/1009863/carter-grandsons-race-not-reason-enough-to-apologize

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Jimmy Carter is asking the Jewish community for
forgiveness -- and insists its not simply because his grandson has decided
to launch a political career with a run for the Georgia state Senate.

Jason Carter, 34, an Atlanta-area lawyer, is considering a run to fill a
seat covering suburban DeKalb County should the incumbent, David Adelman,
win confirmation as President Obama's designated ambassador to Singapore.

The seat, which is university heavy -- Emory, among others, is situated
there -- also has a substantial Jewish community.

IMO former Pres. Carter's alleged apology should have nothing to do
with his grandson. They each must stand on his own two feet.

AFAIK, no.

Of course. But, the way I see it, Carter is saying a
lot more about himself than he is about his critics.

If it is a TRUE request - as in, the transgressor acually shows
how sorry he is, tries to make amends, he should be forgiven.
Such is not the case, ehere.

There is a tradition, rule, something or other (I wish Micha was here)
that after one has apologized and asked forgiveness 3 times, the
responsibility shifts to the person wronged, B. Maybe responsibility
is not the right word. I can't remember how it was phrased. It's B's
turn? I think what it means or maybe says) is that A is not obliged
to keep apologizing. If it means that B is obliged to forgive A, it
seems to me that would refer to little and medium things, not terrible
things.

Just like I said in another post that Xians don't have in mind
something really serious when they talk about [I forget] , this is an
example in Judaism where I believe the topic discussison also assumes
it's not something really serious. The topic woudl be something like
dropping and breaking a glass, borrowing and wrecking a car, saying
something rude, gossipping about someone maybe.

It doesn't mean I think that if A intentionally murders someone in B's
family, then after A apologizes 3 times, there is some responsiblity
on B to forgive him.

I'll accept his apology after he refunds all the salary we paid in
during his disastrous 4 years as President.
It was a clear case of fraud.
