How many of you are old enough to remember The Milliionaire, when it was
on TV in the US, maybe in the 50's.

A fictional rich man would give selected persons, one at a time, a
million dollars, gift tax already paid, and his employee would watch to
see what they did with it. And it was always interesting, what they did
and what happened next.

The rich man's name was John Bears Fertipton.

After a few years, I learned that his name was John Beresford Tipton,
but prior to that I guess I thought he had a Yiddish surname.

Fertipton is a Yiddish surname? What made you think so?

I am quite old enough, but why should I remember something that happened in
the US, aired on CBS from January 19, 1955, to June 8, 1960, originally
sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive??

The only thing "aired in the US in those days" I personally can remember are
the voices of US radio-hams on short wave radio, or talking with them on
RTTY like on a primordial usenet NG, not the aired toothpaste soaps indeed.

In fact "John Beresford Tipton, Jr".

> but prior to that I guess I thought he had a Yiddish surname.

That would be a fictional Yiddish surname, I presume.

He was not even a complete fictional character,
but just his own arm and voice.

I think he's trying to be funny...the prefix fer is found in such
Yiddish words as such as ferklemt, ferblondzshet,
ferkakt, ferdreyt, fermisht, etc. From the German ver, as in
verfluchte, verdammt.

I should have probably spelled the middle name Bers

It sounded like fergessen, fercockteh, farblunget, farbrengen, etc.
Admittedly, I didn't know anyone with those names either, but he already
said what his name was. If he says it's Fertipton, who am I to
disagree?

Also, my brother's name is Dov-Ber. Never thought about that before
but that probably also had an effect.

Shaike is a diminutive form of Yeshaiyohu, which is the original Hebrew form of Isaiah. Sapir is a typical Israeli surname. Shakespeare can be mispronounced as Shaike Sapir, which sounds like an Israeli name.

Of course, like any pun or play on words, it can only be done in the original language. Once translated, it is ruined.

I'm glad someone got it right off the bat, with no explanation.

It occurs to me that I've never met or heard of anyone named Tipton
either, so why not the Jewish version Fertipton.

Checking switchboard.com, there are exactly 100 people named Tipton
listed nationwide, and the first 22 have No known [personal]
associations and No known previous cities. Even after entry 22 about
80% have No known associations and cities. Usually it's about 20%.
It must be the name used by the Witness Protection program.
