Hello Everyone!

I was wondering if anyone else out there is a fan of the Japanese singer
Seiko Matsuda. I "discovered" her music about 8 months ago and have
been slowly collecting her albums and whatever other information that
I can find on her. From what I can gather, she used to be popular in
Japan during the 1980's, but has lost a lot of popularity in recent
years.

Anyway, if you are/were a fan of hers, I'd love to write to you! Her
music really appeals to me, even though I only know a handful of Japanese
words!

'Allo,

I've been looking around a couple of newsgroups for a decent place to
discuss j-pop, and it seems that this might just be the best one.

Yes, I've heard of Seiko Matsuda. She has been a very popular music
star since the late 1970's. Her style is mostly 'bubblegum' (gawd,
there's a phrase I've not heard in ages), but is still well done. She
is still popular, and puts out new material about once a year.

I have a few performances of hers on a show called 'Music Station'.
The're pretty good.

Seiko also had an english language release on CBS records about 3
years ago. I haven't heard much of it, but the one single released
(Who's That Boy?) was good. On at least one song, she was forced to
sing with Donny Wallberg (of NKOTB).

That's about all I can tell you about Seiko, but if you have any
other questions about Japanese pop, feel free to e-mail me or post
to this newsgroup (using the artists or group's name is a sure way
to snare my interest)

Ja, na,

Seiko was just losing popularity to the likes of Akita Nakamura when I was
in Japan, '85-87. She's a cutey, though, and fun. One of Japan's few
talents (in the English sense of the word). Personally, though, I was hot
on Akita.

What I heard went further than that. Akina and Masahiko were a
"couple" for a while, and then rumors started that Masahiko was
secretly seeing another Japanese singer. On Masahiko's birthday in
1989, Akina was alone at his condo and a phone call came in. Akina
answered it, and it was Seiko Matsuda (apparently, she had called to
wish Masahiko happy birthday). Akina was then found later in his
condo with her wrists slashed. These are all rumors, of course.

On a related note, Jeff Nichols, an American that Seiko met in 1990, has
recently written a book called "Jitsu No Ai - Seiko To Boku No Sannenkan"
[True Love - Three Years of Seiko and Me]. It's supposed to detail the
affair that they both had.

Well, the song they sung was more of a nursery rhyme, but it sounds
*very pleasant*....considering her age (I think she's 6 or 7), it was
a good job!

Agreed. There definitely are other Japanese artists that have a better
command of the English language. Seiko *is* improving her English
singing though, and she has a tendency to include at least 1 or 2 English
songs in her new albums.

Seiko Matsuda is cute but too bad she has such an image.
I wouldn't want my girlfriend to have numerous affairs and cheat on me
behind
my back.
I have heard her latest english album and some of the tunes were pretty
catchy.
"the right combination", "halfway to heaven" and "all the way to heaven"
were
very fun to listen to. However they seem to be very shallow and the
feelings
described in the songs were mere infatuations.

The only single released in the U.S. from that album was, in fact,
the duet with Donny Wahlburg -- "The Right Combination". "Who's that
Boy" might have been released in Japan though(?).

Seiko's _very first_ English album was "Sound of My Heart", released in
Japan back in 1985. It was produced by Phil Ramone.

'Fraid I have to dispute you on that one. The song 'Who's that Boy'
was released in the US (CBS Cassette Single 38T 73523) in 1990. It
came from the album 'Seiko' (CBS records 46046). And to tell you
how well it was distributed, I originally bought it in a musicland in
Hays, Kansas (pop. 15,000). It's a shame CBS gave no push to this song
and released the duet quickly after it.

As for new Seiko news, she was on the Music Station 'Top Ten Request'
Special (aired 4/1/94 - the rental store in town just got it in.) Her
top ten list included:

10 Natsu no Tobira
9 Rock'n Rouge
8 Shiroi Parasol
7 Tengoku no kiss
6 Seifuku
5 Sweet Memories
4 Aoi Sangosho
3 Daite
2 Daisetsuna anata
1 Akai Sweet Pea

Most of these songs (the major exceptions being #2 & 3) were from
1980-1984.

Seiko performed 'Akai Sweet Pea' and a new song, "Mo ichido Hajime kara".

The show also featured Chisato Moritaka, Princess Princess, and the
one and only Shizuka Kudo (plus a couple others I'm too tired to recall
now. I'll post on the rest of the show after I've watched it in it's
entirety).

Shizuka looked great! Aside from the #1 request, she performed her new
single 'Blue Rose'. Very Hot!

Another artist with a great command of english is Nokko (formerly
of Rebecca), who had an all english release in the states last year.
('Call Me Nightlife' Epic EK53135)

And ... no conformation on either of these yet ... but X Japan and
Dreams Come True look to be poised for the American market this year.
Toshi's english has jumped leaps and bounds since 'Jealousy' came out,
and the band just signed with Atlantic records. Dreams Come True's last
single 'Winter Song' is completely in English, and the B side of it was
a song from their last album, also redone in English. Since they are
already on Sony records ....

Now if I can only regain my command of English ...

To the best of my knowledge, "Who's that Boy?" didn't chart. Too bad.

Music station is a weekly (or nearly weekly) show that features current
songs from a wide range of pop/rock artists. Seiko shows up at least
a couple times a year. The special I refered to happens every 6 months
on Music Station. The network lets the public know who is going to
be on the show and then asks them to mail in a list of which songs they
would like to have the artists do.

I have about 40 different Music Station broadcasts, and I know Seiko is
on at least 3 or 4. I might even be persuaded to tape trade for them.
E-mail me for more info ...

That!s right, Princess Masako is a superior human being to Seiko Matsuda.
She has more worth to society than Seiko. She is intelligent and
accomplished and she is a role model not only to Japanese people but to
people all around the world. She is a virtuous and highly intelligent
woman. What has seiko matsuda done but to promote immorality and serve as
a terrible role model to many confused japanese kids. It is time the
world turn to God and goodness rather than the immorality and sinfulness
which can be seen so evidently in some of the people responding to the
newsgroups. The bible says, thou shalt not commit adultery etc. etc.

What is immorality? What is sin?

Why do you refer to the bible? Even if the bible says so
it doesn't convice me. I think this is true for a lot of
people in this newsgroups. What is adultery anyway?

Sleeping with Princess Masako. :-) Just kidding! The name just popped into
my head when I was trying to think of some famous Japanese woman more
desirable than Seiko. If you're reading this group, Your Highness (yeah,
right), gomen nasai.

I shall refrain from commenting on the rest of schin's post because IMHO
debating with fundamentalists is only slightly less annoying than debating
with gun advocates....

PS Just for the record, no, I _don't_ have Imperial family fetish.

:-) :-) :-) Or, at the other end of the spectrum: Princess Kiko's next
child, at its present stage of development (if it's a girl, of course).

Let's turn this around, it's too easy like this. I challenge anyone to
name me a *less* desirable (or less talented) Japanese woman than
Seikei "Shippai" Matsuda... Well, come on. Surprise me!

Bleergh,

While Akina has had her share of personal problems and not-so-hot record
releases lately, I think it's unfair to place her in the same category as Seiko.
Akina is nowhere as ditzy (sorry to all you Seiko fans out there) and at
least doesn't choke on live performances. At least, Akina doesn't try to
have a sweet girl image anymore. Not to mention, Akina's off and on acting career
hasn't been too shabby (Sugao no Mama de is the only one I remember off the top
of my head if you want a reference).

Well, Akina did have a problem with her relationships, and I'm under the
impression she's incapable of getting along with her managers.

Can't say I can compare the two, but she's dropped quite low...

Hmmm... I must admit I'm not too familiar with Japanese tarento in
general... I don't know Nakamori Akina, Saito Yuki and Awaya Noriko...
Sorry, guys! I'll study and try to catch up, okay?

As for the other two, I suppose they rank fairly low on the
desirability scale, but at least they have *some* redeeming qualities.
Sakurada Junko, especially, is really not a bad actress, as Japanese
actresses go (I'll refrain from commenting on her singing career).

:>Wada Akiko. Everyone go home now, no one's going to beat this one. :-)

Ma...maketa....

:-) Wada Akiko is a (much) better-than-average singer. As for Ken
Naoko, I'm glad you mentioned her: she's solidly fixed on my nr. 2
spot :-)

You're doing a great job, but you haven't beaten Shippai yet! Come on,
one more effort... How about Hotta Katsuhiko's "obatarian" (the manga
character)? Only, she's in a different age class, so that's not fair.
Yamase Mami? Oh that voice... And to top it all off, she's in Fujitsu
commercials! (or was, I suppose)

Cheers,

Eric.

With that, I'm sure she lost a lot of supporters and fans.
