Let's see... *Traditional*... Most of the Socal JA areas are relatively
new or remodeled. But for starters:

Little Tokyo--Downtown L.A. approx. bounded by 1st St to 4th St and San
Pedro to Alameda. The original (along with San Pedro up until the WWII
relocation). Japanese Village Plaza, Yaohan Plaza, Japanese American
Museum, Japan America Theater, several depaatos, lots of smaller shops,
some of which could be called "traditional." Home of the Nissei Week
Festival.

Gardena--About 10 miles south of downtown L.A., west of I-110 roughly
between Redondo Beach Blvd and 182nd(?) or so. Enbun, Yaohan, many
others. Traditional? saa...

Sawtelle District--West L.A. near I-10 and I-405 interchange centered on
Sawtelle Blvd. The original gardener's district. "Kabuki" on Santa
Monica Blvd just west of Sawtelle sells lots of traditional kinds of
things.

Costa Mesa--In Orange County south of I-405 on Bristol (another Yaohan
Plaza with a Kinokuniya and other shops). The newest area. Traditional?
Betsu ni...

I'm sure there are others but I don't know outside of the LA/Orange County
area very well... HTH

Not sure if this is traditional enough for you, but you should be able
to find a good selection of things at any area Yaohan supermarket. They
have more than just food -- books and videotapes and things can also be
purchased there.

Take care,

Little Tokyo (downtown LA) has some, many Japanese restaurants in
Gardena, Orange County has many pretty decent Japanese
restaurants. Basically, the west side has many Japanese
restaurants, check out West LA, Santa Monica, Torrance, etc.
