The issue is so painful, that I am making my answer to you
public.

I have to sources:

1) The Revolt. by Menachem Begin, Z"L.
2) The restored State of Israel, by David Ben Gurion, Z"L.

The versions do not concurr.

Nevertheless, it is interesting to read the following quote
from the preface to the 1972 edition of Begins book:

"About twenty years after the tragedy, one of the people
closest to Mr. Ben Gurion came to me and told me, on his own
initiative, the following words: "WE HAVE ARRIVED AT THE
CONCLUSION THAT IN THE ALTALENA MATTER BEN GURION WAS MISLED"

From the book's account, it is clear that he was referring to
Ben Guirion's Cabinet Member Mr. Galili, who was the go-between
during the affair.

One appalling feature, is that, in spite of the highly
emotional contents of the issue, both great men tell the story
with great pain, but without a hint of hatred. No one says who
gave the direct order to open fire, but both of them show their
regret at the victims deaths.

I, like you, would like to see a scholarly work done by
historians, politically unbiased. I think that such a work is
still waiting to be done.

The Altalena issue (as the Deyr Yassin one) are used by
unscrupulous politicians on both sides, to bash the opponent,
before all the facts are duly elucidated, and using hearsay
only.

Additional to Haim Guivon's list (below) may I also recommend two books, which I have in Hebrew. I don't know if they were published in English: ALTALENA by Shlomo Nakdimon, published by Edanim, a Yediot Aharonot publication, 1978. and THE STORY OF THE ALTALENA COMMANDER (Sipuro shel mefaked Altalena) by Eliahu Lankin, published by Hadar books (I have trhe 1974 edition). Notes:

It is sayed that the mentioned commander Galeely refused to
take the task of sinking the ship Altelana. ( Some may use
the term "murdering the right-wingers Jews on Altalena" ).

Does any one know a source for that ?

No one deny now that Rabin did cary that mission.
Does any one know a sourse opposing that fact?

Ben Gurion declared, just after the killing the 16 right wingers:

"Blessed be the holy-canon his place will be at the thierd temple".
