For those who knew him in person, in correspondence, or as a
contributor to soc.culture.irish it is my sad duty to inform you
that Tony Dermody, my father, died suddenly and unexpectedly at
his home on September 4th 2004.

It was a shock to all our family and to those friends, comrades
and colleagues closest to him. He will be sorely missed.

He was cremated at Newlands Cross Crematorium on Thursday 9th of
September at a very well attended memorial service. We (his
family) scattered his ashes at the farm in Douras, Co. Galway
where he grew up last Saturday.

He tremendously enjoyed posting to this news group, and we often
argued the subjects raised over pints at the local pub when I
came to visit on weekends or holidays. Reading over some of those
posts now is a painful and bitter-sweet experience. My
admiration for an excellent father continues to grow.

Thanks to all who knew him.

Kind regards,

Denis Dermody

He will be greatly missed on s.c.i. as well. I didn't know him
personally but the impression I got from reading his posts was of a
well-read, intelligent man who always had something worthwhile to
contribute to the discussion. We could do with a lot more of his like
here and he is a sad loss.

Condolences to you and the rest of his family,

Crikey, that's a shock. He was one of the best informed and most
intelligent posters I've read, not just on sci but on the 'net in
general.

R.I.P. and sorry for your trouble.

Sad sad news to get this morning.
I only knew your father from his posts on this newsgroup which I
always admired for their depth, incisiveness and intelligence. They
were well written, fair, educational and sprinkled with his own subtle
wit, a wit he could weild like a rapier when he wanted. Reading them
was an absolute pleasure, and that's no overstatement.

You couldn't but respect his passion for poetry, the Irish language,
and Ireland's labour and trade union history. Men and women like Tony
Dermody make me proud to be Irish.
I can only imagine knowing him in person was an honour, and he was one
of a very small handful of people on Usenet who I wish I could have
known beyond the confines of a newsreader and a computer screen.

Very very sad.

I measc na nGael go raibh a anam fíoruasal.

My condolonces to you and yours Denis.

I have only read relatively few of Tony's posts over the years - but it is
with sadness that I hear he has departed.
May he rest in peace, and may you and yours forever cherish the good times
you had with him.

I'm sorry to hear of his death. I think I met him briefly over a
decade ago when Paul invited me to a party in the family home.

I am saddened more than I can say by this news. My deepest sympathies
are with you & your family, Denis.

We in s.c.i. were privileged to know some small part of your father’s
wit, warmth, & sharpness of mind, as well as the generosity of spirit
that somehow so seamlessly blended with his conviction & purposefulness:
a rare combination indeed of head & heart.

His love of a good argument – in the best sense of the word - & the
exuberance & dedication with which he would engage ideas & discussions,
elevated his contributions to the newsgroup above the ordinary level.
He would hold his corner with determination… yet he was not afraid to
admit he could be wrong. How many of us can show that same confidence &
courage?

His intellectual curiosity must have been evident even to the most
casual observer, but I for one have reason to know it was as deep as it
was broad: I still have in my files the reading lists he & I exchanged
over the years, on science, & social evolution, & socialism…

… & always, of course, poetry.

Like Michael McCullough, I can say Tony Dermody was one of the
s.c.i.tizens I most would have liked to know in real life - & like
Gerard Cunningham, I think he is best remembered thru his own words.

In the thread Ger quoted, Tony’s love of poetry & his gallantry were
both in full & glorious display. An unsuspecting newbie had forged into
s.c.i seeking our help in identifying Irish poems that might be suitable
to share with children: where others might have teased or grumbled,
Tony replied with a bouquet of well chosen works - promptly, simply, &
with follow-ups.

& having expressed his unhappiness with the rather leaden translation of
one of those works - Seán Ó Ríordáin’s _Cúl An Tí _ - it was in true
Tony Dermody form that he then rose to my challenge to address this
deficiency himself, producing a translation that I consider beyond
question a work of art in its own right.

http://www.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=35156938.18740980%40news.iol.ie

The world may read Tony’s work on Ger’s poetry pages, at
<http://homepage.eircom.net/~abardubh/poetry/gael/dan008.html> - but I
copy it here in honour of a good man, who will be much missed - even in
the homes of strangers.

_Back of the House_
Translation by Tony Dermody
~~~
At the back of the house is a land of youth,
A jumbled beautiful space among
The farmyard beasts unclothed, unshod,
Nor knowing the Irish or English tongue,
Walking the way.
Yet each one grows an ample cloak,
Where chaos is the heart of rule,
And in that land the language spoke
Was taught of old in Aesop’s school,
Long passed away.
Some hens are here, a chicken clutch,
A simple duck, though fixed of mind,
A big black dog with wicked looks
Barking loud like a good watch-hound,
A cat sun-baking;
There, a heap of bric-a-brac,
The cast-off treasure stuff of life,
A candlestick, buckles, an old straw hat,
A bugle quiet, and a kettle white
Like a goose waking.
Here the tinkers come uncouth,
Blessing generously all they see,
Feeling at home in the land of youth,
Seeking cast-off things for free,
All over Ireland.
I would go back in the dead of night,
The treasure gilded in the moonbeams’ reach,
Perhaps to see in the eerie light
The child-wise Aesop’s phantom teach
His ghostly learning.
