U.S. Walks Out as Iran Leader Speaks
Josh Haner/The New York Times

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed world leaders during
the General Assembly at the United Nations on Thursday.

UNITED NATIONS — The president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, issued a
series of incendiary comments in his address to the United Nations
General Assembly on Thursday afternoon, noting in particular that some
people believe the United States orchestrated the Sept. 11 attacks as
part of a propaganda campaign to “reverse the declining American
economy” and to “save the Zionist regime,” meaning Israel.

Josh Haner/The New York Times

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed world leaders during
the General Assembly at the United Nations on Thursday.
He also lambasted the world’s nuclear powers for trying to halt Iran’s
own nuclear program.

The General Assembly, an annual gathering of world leaders, started
formally on Thursday with more than 30 presidents, kings and other
heads of state scheduled to speak. Mr. Ahmadinejad’s comments, made
just a few dozen blocks from the World Trade Center site, prompting a
walkout by representatives of the United States, 27 European nations,
the European Union, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Costa Rica.

He has said in less public circumstances that the Sept. 11 attacks
were “a big fabrication” used “as a pretext for the campaign against
terrorism and a prelude for staging an invasion against Afghanistan.”

But, as in prior years, he used the General Assembly meeting to issue
comments that generate controversy and media attention. This year’s
speech came against the backdrop of commemorations of the attacks and
a swelling anger against Islam in the United States.

The United States Mission to the United Nations quickly issued a
response to Mr. Ahmadinejad’s speech. “Rather than representing the
aspirations and goodwill of the Iranian people, Mr. Ahmadinejad has
yet again chosen to spout vile conspiracy theories and anti-Semitic
slurs that are as abhorrent and delusional as they are predictable,”
the mission said in a statement.

Mr. Ahmadinejad framed his comments about Sept. 11 as an examination
of opinions, an approach he has used in questioning the Holocaust, as
well.

“In identifying those responsible behind the Sept. 11 attacks, there
were three viewpoints,” he said. “First, that a very powerful and
complex terrorist group able to successfully cross all layers of the
American intelligence and security carried out the attack. This is the
prevalent viewpoint which has been supported mainly and advocated by
American statesmen.

“Second: that some segments within the U.S. government orchestrated
the attack to reverse the declining American economy and its grips on
the Middle East in order to save the Zionist regime. The majority of
the American people, as well as most nations and politicians around
the world agree with this view.

“Third: it was carried out by a terrorist group but that the American
government supported and took advantage of the situation. Apparently,
this viewpoint has fewer proponents.”

Other leaders spoke more circumspectly.

¶ Unlike most leaders, Wen Jiabao, the prime minister of China,
focused his speech exclusively on China’s domestic accomplishments,
with a brief global reference at the end when he suggested a vital,
peaceful China was good for the world’s peace and prosperity.

The speech, entitled “Getting to Know the Real China,” had a kind of
chamber of commerce tone to it, lauding his country’s economic
progress while recognizing that it had a way to go with 150 million
people living below the poverty line. Referring to China as “a big,
ancient country in the East,” Mr. Wen said his people were proud of
their achievements and determined to forge even greater progress
through education, science and technology.

“China’s gross domestic product is the third largest in the world, but
in per capita terms, it is only one-tenth of that of developed
countries,” he said. “China has enjoyed over 30 years of fast growth,
but its further development faces energy, resources and environmental
constraints. China is a leading producer of many important products,
but it remains at the lower end of the global industrial chain.”

Along with economic reorganization and outreach to foreign investors,
he also pledged to “respect and protect human rights, uphold social
equality and justice and strive to achieve the free and all-around
development for our people.”

He offered reassurances that China’s growth would not come at other
countries’ cost.

“The Chinese nation, which has created an economic miracle, will
create a new cultural splendor as well,” he said, adding, “China’s
development will not harm anyone, or pose a threat to anyone.”

¶ The Turkish president, Abdullah Gul, endorsed American efforts to
forge peace in the Middle East, but he also singled out Israel for
criticism both for its nuclear arsenal and for its attack on a Turkish-
organized humanitarian convoy at sea in May during which nine people
were killed.

“We hope that this new engagement can take us closer to a viable and
fair settlement,” Mr. Gul said. “On the other hand, it would be very
difficult to make progress toward permanent peace unless we put an end
to the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza.”

Mr. Gul called the attack a violation of international law, welcoming
the report Wednesday from the Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights
Council, which endorsed that viewpoint.

“The report offers a solid legal framework for establishing the facts
about this incident,” he said, repeating Turkey’s demands for an
apology from Israel and compensation for the victims.

On nuclear weapons, Mr. Gul said the reaffirmation of the Nuclear
Nonproliferation Treaty earlier this year had left a hole when it
comes to the Middle East, by “ignoring the de facto existence of
nuclear weapons of certain countries at the heart of the most delicate
regions.” He said the 2012 conference expected on creating a zone free
of unconventional weapons in the Middle East could boost similar
efforts globally. ¶ The emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-
Thani, also defended the Gaza aid flotilla and demanded that
international community to work to break the blockade around the
strip. “The persistence of Israel in violating international law and
humanitarian values was reflected in the acts of piracy which where
committed against peace activists who tried to break the unjust and
inhuman siege,” he said.

¶ President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi, speaking on behalf of the
African Union, urged the General Assembly to defer for one year the
war crimes charges brought by the International Criminal Court against
President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan, in order to avoid
jeopardizing the outcome of the January referendum on independence for
southern Sudan. Under article 16 of the Rome Statute, as the court’s
founding document is known, the Security Council has that authority,
but opponents have not been able to muster the necessary votes there
for a suspension of the charges, stemming from years of violence in
Darfur.

“One of the most immediate options in the Sudan is to consolidate the
prevailing peace and stability in the country,” he said. “The African
countries are concerned that while efforts to secure lasting peace in
Sudan are ongoing, the International Criminal Court seems to push for
a ‘pound of flesh’ by insisting on arresting President Omar Hassan al-
Bashir. There is general consensus in Africa that this will negatively
polarize the different positions of the stakeholders, thereby driving
them away from a peaceful settlement.”

Ahmadinejad Asks U.N. to Investigate 9/11
By ROBERT MACKEY

Morteza Nikoubazl/Reuters

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday in Tehran.Updated |
Wednesday | 10:24 a.m. Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who said
last month that the terrorist attacks in the United States on Sept.
11, 2001, were “a big fabrication,” wrote to the United Nations
secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, on Tuesday to ask him to open an
investigation into the events of that day.

In a letter to the secretary general, Mr. Ahmadinejad asked him to
“form an independent fact-finding committee trusted by regional
countries on major elements behind [the] September 11 attack which was
carried out as the main pretext to attack the Middle East,” according
to the Iranian Students News Agency.

The letter also accused “NATO intelligence and security forces in
Afghanistan” and “some American and European media” of supporting
terrorist attacks by Baluchi militants in Iran’s southeast. In
February, when Iran announced the arrest of Abdolmalek Rigi, the
leader of the Baluchi militant group Jundallah, it broadcast video of
the captured rebel on state television in which he claimed that he had
acted with support from the Obama administration.

Barbara Plett, the BBC’s U.N. correspondent, reports from New York
that the secretary general’s office “said that it was studying the
letter from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad but had no comment.”
A somewhat muddled translation of Mr. Ahmadinejad’s letter on the
Iranian news agency’s Web site (which, in places, does not match the
same agency’s own report on it) suggests that Iran’s president also
made an oblique reference to the killing of protesters during the
violent crackdown on dissent after Iran’s dispute election last year.
Accusing Western media organizations of being part of a plot against
his country, Mr. Ahmadinejad wrote that they “use a small mistake of a
police officer — in countries that defy hegemony and imperialistic
policies — to raise loud and deafening cries pretending to be in deep
grief for human rights abuse.”

1,100 architects and engineers worldwide signed a petition calling for
independent investigation of the destruction of those three buildings
this spring. The evidence they offer is compelling. There is no
dispute that the official explanation offered by the 9/11 commission
could stand a little work–it doesn’t even mention building 7.
Personally, I can’t believe our air defense response was what it was
and that no one seems to mind.

Conrad C. Elledge

Ahmadinejad certainly makes for a strange bedfellow but Iran does have
an interest in the matter when you consider the US military has
invaded and now occupies two countries on its border solely on the
basis that the purported perpetrators of the attacks were harbored by
those two countries.

The victims families have been calling for independent investigation
and have been largely shunned. Of course the whole subject is
extremely difficult to face because it involves accepting as a premise
some degree of complicity of forces within the US government. No
wonder the opposing response is so vehement because it strikes at the
very notion of America and I recall my own shock at learning of the US
government’s role in the white glove operation in South America. Very
troubling but exactly what marks the difference in a real patriot.

Wrong, Jake. John Farmer, who was the Senior Counsel for the 9/11
Commission, recently came out with a book called “The Ground Truth:
The Story Behind America’s Defense on 9/11″. The author builds the
inescapably convincing case that the official version… is almost
entirely untrue…
Farmer, who is Dean of Rutger Universities’ School of Law and former
Attorney General of New Jersey, was responsible for drafting the
original flawed 9/11 report. So, if its mostly untrue, then crazy
Iranian guy in this case is unfortunately not wrong in asking for a
new investigation. What’s sad is he is asking for it and our own
leaders are not… they are content to allow the myth of the 9/11 report
and the lies it was based on stand. Sad for our country

Well, Mahmoud Ahmadnejad is not boring in his rhetoric. He has
followers which may defy the rational thinking of most people, but
there are people in this country who believe 911 was a conspiracy.

What would happen if the UN did an investigation into 911? There would
more conspiracy theories out there. President Ahmadnejad would move to
a new subject like questioning the US moon landings and ask for a full
investigation. Perhaps, a rocket could be built for him personally to
go to the moon to verify his assumptions. There are people in this
country who don’t believe we went to the moon as well.

The beauty of the current communication system is that everyone has a
voice. Forget rationality! Logical thinking! Critical reasoning! Let
it all flow. Pick and choose your reality. For in the final analysis
at the end of the day, people follow who they choose and believe what
they want.

Ahmedinjiad is neither a moron nor a disgrace. Unlike American
presidents, he hasn’t killed anyone. As for denial of holocaust and
9/11… well, so does a third of America. When a goverment make it
unlawful to question holocaust, or very grudgingly, under intense
public pressure, provide conflicting reports on 9/11, with much of the
report blacked out, then don’t blame the public (or foreign leaders)
for calling it a bluff.

…interesting. I looked up that book by Farmer and found a lot of
criticism about it.
But then I found this quote by former Reagan administration official &
economist Paul Craig Roberts:
“Most of the reviews of John Farmer’s book miss its importance.
Farmer has no way of knowing what happened on 9/11 or who did it.
What he does know and has figured out is that the 9/11 Commission
was lied to by people who were supposed to be helping the Commission
deliver the truth to the public.
Whether the lies were big or little, whether the lies were told to
coverup
a false flag operation or to cover the butts of agencies that had
failed
in their responsibilities, whether Farmer’s explanations for the lies
are
correct or incorrect, the fact remains that the Commission was misled.
The conclusion to be drawn is that the Commission’s report is
unreliable
and, therefore, that we do not have the truth about 9/11.
That this conclusion comes from the legal counsel to the Commission is
compelling evidence that a new investigation is required.”

Ahmadinejad is certainly an enemy of US interests. And Robert Mackey
is certainly a pitiful journalist. The letter he links to does not in
any way suggest that Ahmadinejad was writing to the UN to deny the
events of 9/11, as this article not-so-subtly suggests. The letter
asks the UN to investigate **American military actions** that have
been undertaken on the pretext of 9/11.

What Ahmadinejad, and by extension, the Supreme Leader of Iran, is
doing is questioning the connection between 9/11 and increased
military presence in the Middle East. In asking for an investigation
into the “elements behind 9/11″ the Iranians are attempting to point
out that 9/11 was not state terrorism but was executed by a non-state
actor, Al-Qaida. Therefore, according to him, US military invasions
are unjustified and should be investigated on that basis.

That Ahmadinejad is a statist and oppressive president is obvious. But
to suggest that he is questioning the events of 9/11 based on this
letter to the UN is beyond stupid.

Your objections seem to be based in part on the fact that you have
clicked on one link I provided but not the other. At the start of the
post above, I was quoting not the translation of the letter provided
by the Iranian news agency (which I mentioned is somewhat muddled) but
the main news article from the same agency (which is under the control
of the Iranian government), which does includes a direct quote from a
part of the letter not in the other text – calling for an
investigation of “major elements behind [the] September 11 attack
which was carried out as the main pretext to attack the Middle East.”

You also provide absolutely no supporting evidence for your assertion
that Mr. Ahmadinejad is calling for an investigation of Al Qaeda’s
role in the attacks. And that assertion raises two fairly large
questions: First of all, why would he ask for an investigation to
establish the role of Al Qaeda when the group itself has already
admitted that? Secondly, why would he avoid simply using the name Al
Qaeda if that is what he meant?.32.MarvelMAApril 13th, 20109:47 pmThis
has nothing to do with fact. He doesn’t even care if they happened or
not. This is about redirecting the emotions of his people onto the
integrity of history based on belief and nationalistic pandering. It’s
about discrediting the validity of western history in a move to secure
and mold the nature of the middle east zeitgeist for total hegemonic
dominance. He wants “his” history to be known because his forever
brands everyone on the other side of the pond (i.e. anyone who has any
tendency towards Zion, is not Persian (’cause he’d like to think he
were establishing anew empire) or is gay) as not merely an enemy, but
a nemesis. If Iranians believe the West is the ultimate deceiver and
distorter, that we seek to annihilate their way of life and make it
cozier for Satan to establish his kingdom on earth then Ahmadinejad is
just doing his dictatorial job. He’s satisfying their desire for
boosting their national pride. Some wouldn’t even care if it’s
fabricated. According to them, we might as well have done it
ourselves. This is what some people believe. And if history has shown
us anything, fabricated or not, we rally around fire, not facts. Well,
not all of us.

To second #’s 12, 16, 17 and 22. The 9/11 investigation, done not at
the request or desire of the Bush-Cheney administration, was a white-
wash which does not withstand serious scrutiny. There are far too many
strange things which occurred from the total lapse of the air force
response (busy doing an “exercise” with Cheney supervising, in which
fictional planes were attacking….), the in-footprint-collapse of WTC
1&2, which structurally should have ended with the floors gone but the
central column(s) standing; to the inexplicable (by normal physics)
collapse of the ignored bldg 7, and on and on.

A true, independent investigation of 9/11 is long over-due and a
necessity, no matter where it leads, for the US to heal internally.
That our Iranian muddies the matter is of no import.

US and around the world, especially in the Middle East, who believe
that 911 was a US-backed and covered-up Black Ops event. A UN study
would do very little. The US government would not cooperate with it;
they didn’t cooperate with their own 911 Commission why would they

Ahmadinejad has created a rallying point for conspiracy theorists and
anti-US political factions at no cost to himself. If he is not
publicly humiliated for spreading lies then, by his standards, he
wins.

First the the conspiracy theorist love this nonsense. They are always
willing to add more misinformation to the pile. For example some sock
puppet using the name “joe G” says the John Farmer book questions the
conclusion of the 9/11 commission. Not so. The book calls into
question the initial description of the US response. JoeG also
provides lots of half truths and outright lies. I can hardly wait to
find out who s/he thinks really did blow up the WTC.

Second, the only way Ban Ki Moon should respond is tell the president
of Iran that his demand for an investigation is denied and that the UN
hierarchy and security council believe that the president of Iran is
lying for political gain at the expense of the memory of 3000 people
who lost their lives in a deliberate and repeatedly admitted attack on
American civilians by the Islamist terrorist group Al Queda

mild topic designed to distract the UN (and the media, and the West)
from its nuclear program.

The 9/11 truthers are the equivalent of today’s birthers. They are
poorly educated idiots that lack critical reasoning skills and are
susceptible to conspiracy theories due to their shortcomings in the
education they received.

Let’s realize that neither we nor the world at large are the primary
audiences for Ahmadinejad’s claims. He has lots of political
dissatisfaction to deal with in his own country, which nevertheless
has a populace that generally distrusts the U.S. However ridiculous
his assertions, they find ready acceptance among his citizens. It’s
simple propaganda. It diverts Iranians’ anger against the evils of
their own regime and shifts it to a foreign enemy. It also directs
awareness away from international fears of Iran’s nuclear ambitions. A
classic red herring.

Right, Osama and Al Queda have not taken credit for 9/11 and even brag
about it and threaten more incidents. There were never any training
camps anywhere nor any people connected to Al Queda or other radical
Islamic groups doing other terrorist acts or caught planning more
acts. What is wrong with people denying that some have taken credit
for 9/11 and bragging about more to come. Radical Islam doesn’t exist
I guess. We are safe and Isreal can let all Hamas cross the borders
into it’s country.

I don’t buy into all the negative propaganda against this man. I have
seen how he was treated at Colombia, I have seen how his speeches were
purposely misinterpreted, I have seen how the media here have
demonized this man to make us believe he is the Muslim Satan. Of
course he is nothing of the kind. His sole responsibility is to the
safety and well being of his country, as it should be. If his charge
is more than his critics are willing to understand, then we will
continue to see the ridiculous accusations coming from western media
organizations. I believe that once Iran acquires a nuclear weapon we
will finally see peace in the Middle East, for perhaps then Israel
will be influenced to release the Palestinians from their prison camps
and allow them to form their own state.

stunt men to jump off the roof and the WTC buildings actually never
existed. it was a three dimensional mirage created by david
copperfield.

Is Ahmadinejad mad? Put on your objective journalist hat and do your
own research. Google “where was XYZ on September 11, 2001. Read
carefully and critically. Try these names. George HW Bush. Larry
Silverstein. Jerome Hauer. Adolph Ochs Sulzberger. Richard Cheney.
Read. Evaluate. Form your own conclusions before you start hurling

The truth of 9/11 is really irrelevant in this case. Ahmadinejad’s
fascination with the 9/11 story is purely pathological. Even if the
9/11 attack was fabricated (and maybe I’m Zeus incarnate!) his probing
smacks of so much political self-interest that the question itself is
more important than any answer. Just like his Shoah revisionism stems
not from some intellectual curiosity but seeks to stir up alliances
against Israel. He quite likely believes in 9/11 and the Shoah; I
doubt the man is really as ignorant as he’s claiming to be.

Iran’s version of Limbaugh-Beck-Hannity-O’Reilly…

someone counters with evidence, repeat the lie. More evidence. Repeat

I’m a deep-dish liberal who thinks Ahmadinejad is a world-class
nutcase, and that the planet would be far better off without him.

I emphasize my locus on the political spectrum because Faux Nooze
buffoons, hate-radio jocks and reactionary blogging zealots all enjoy
regurgitating the deliberate misinformation of linking the likes
Ahmadinejad with Democrats and American progressives, to further
promote their own radical right-wing shtick.

So, to the gang that disingenuously claims Hitler and Ahmadinejad are
liberals and Joe McCarthy was a great American — it just ain’t so, and
we’ve got your number.

Many thanks to Mr. Ahmadinejad for his ask U.N. to investigate 9/11
but can he ask U.N for the following investigations also:

1.Number of people which killed by Iran police or other armed guards
after his second selection
2.Number of people which jailed by Iran different courts since 2009

Investigation is a very good way to analyze something but when we
don’t want to be investigated by our own people how we can request
U.N. to do investigation on something that many countries approved it.
By wasting Iranian people money, time and reputation he just makes his
cases more badly and Iranian more know him and his government.

Armadinejad has every right to ask for an enquiry, a neighbouring
country was invaded as a result of 9/11 – the US sabre rattling is
aiming at Iran next. If the Bush Administration were found to be
complicit in the 9/11 attacks, perhaps the West would re-think its
perception of where exactly in the world the ‘evil empire’ is located.

He must be so angry with the double standards of hawkish behaviour
towards his country for his push to becoming a nuclear power, when
Israel has had nuclear warheads at Dimona for 40 years, has not signed
up to the NPT and is not investigated by the IAEA.

The US and Israel are the ones suggesting nuclear strikes, not Iran

This is, at best, sloppy journalism. Nowhere in the Iranian
President’s UN request does he question the 9/11 events nor ask for an
investigation into it. Therefore, the whole premise of this blog is
false. Am I the only one who followed the link to read the letter?

As we explained earlier in this thread, the Iranian news agency that
published this rough and apparently partial translation of the letter
is the same one that published the report – also linked to above –
which includes the direct quoted from the letter asking for the 9/11
investigation..66.BrianBostonApril 20th, 20104:45 pmIt is kind of
frightening to think of how much of the world might agree with
Ahmadinejad and the 9/11 truthers’ views, especially judging from some
of the comments here.

In fact, you can treat a clown but this guy is just reacting at the
American and European Actions toward his country. It’s just a
political fight and if you’re so sure that your events of 11/9, why
would make a step in the back ? I mean in the last crisis or world
wars, we’ve wait 40-50 years at less, like in the death of famous
president JFK with still secret veiling the history, or today we aim
that we are developping nations but in fact, we would continue to wait
50 years again for see and mesure the reality ? We can expose ourself
straight now to the reality and the skeptical aspect must be verify
during the time that it is still fresh for the details and comparison.
After that, I think America and European Union would have more worth
for tackle Iran on the Political’s Faith of his gouvernment.

JD 2454, bi Laden attacked the US b/c he’s a mass murdering
psychopath. His justification for murdering 3,000 people was that the
US had entered Muslims Holy Land (Saudi Arabia) during the Gulf War.
Furthermore, the Taliban and Al Qaeda are similar but different. The
Taliban is a form of Govt. headed by Mullah Omar and is popular in N.
Pakistan and parts of Afghanistan. The Taliban allowed Al Qaeda, bin
Laden’s terror group, to safely harbor and train jihadists within
Afghanistan, which is why Afghanistan was attacked by the US when it
failed to hand over bin Laden and Co. and refused to cooperate with
the US.
