The commander of the US-led air campaign
in Iraq says Republican Guard units outside
the capital Baghdad are "dead", following in-
tense bombardment. "The Iraqi military as an
organised defence in large combat formations
doesn't really exist anymore," Lieutenant-General
Michael Moseley told Pentagon reporters.
General Moseley also announced that coalition
aircraft had begun a 24-hour patrol operation
over Baghdad to be able to respond to needs
of troops on the ground. The announcement
came after US forces - backed by tanks and
armoured vehicles - made their first incursion
into the Iraqi capital.
They fought skirmishes with Iraq's elite Special
Republican Guard as they went up to the Tigris
river from the southern outskirts of the city before
moving west towards the airport.
US Major-General Victor Renuart said the inten-
tion was to indicate to the Iraqi leader that coali-
tion forces could move in and out of Baghdad
whenever they wished.
Pentagon officials added that the troops also
wanted to test the Iraqi response - and other
operations targeting more specific objectives
and points of resistance are likely.

As U.S. military troops push toward Baghdad
with the most modern equipment, technology
and training money can buy, the Iraqi leadership
will rely on a defense that is ancient as warfare
itself: underground tunnels and bunkers.
... Among the more extensive tunnel complexes
are those described by Hussein Shahristani, once
Iraq's top nuclear scientist, who was tortured and
imprisoned in Iraq. Shahristani, who escaped Iraq
during the first Gulf War, said that subway plans
developed by several foreign firms were actually
used by the Iraqi military to hide and transport the
country's chemical and biological weapons.
Shahristani told CBS's "60 Minutes" in February that
he believed Iraq had "more than 100 kilometers of
very complex network, multi-layer tunnels."
Other Iraqi exiles and former Western construction
company officials have said all of Saddam's presi-
dential palaces include deep, hardened bunkers,
some of them massive in scale. Included among
them is one $70 million palace-and-bunker complex
that is protected by thick layers of concrete, steel
and blast doors that Wolfgang Wendler, a German
engineer who helped build it, described as being
able to withstand a Hiroshima-size explosion.
... Many of Iraq's military tunnels are believed to
have been built by Aeroinzenjering, a Serbian
engineering firm once run by the military of the
former Yugoslavia. Hussein maintained a close
relationship with Communist leader Tito (Josip
Broz), and with Slobodan Milosevic, whose under-
ground tunnels and bunkers bedeviled U.S. and
NATO commanders during the 1999 Kosovo air
war.
The company's Web site boasts that Aeroinzen-
jering has constructed a 450,000-square-meter
facility described as "special airport underground
fortification structures, sheltering complete military
units and equipment." But it does not say where
the facility was built.
... A batch of technological innovations is allowing
the U.S. government to better understand what's
below the surface ... Among them are seismic
devices akin to big hammers that pound the ground
and bounce back a signature like radar.
Experts also use gravimeters, which measure the
variations in the gravitational field between two or
more points to help pinpoint underground installa-
tions. Special high-flying spy cameras that measure
thermal energy and chemical releases are used to
find clues that may indicate the presence of under-
ground activity. ...

When one of the most secure and luxurious
of his palace-and-bunker complexes was com-
pleted in 1984, at a cost of $70 million, Saddam
Hussein moved in right away. But even protected
by enormous layers of concrete, sand and steel,
behind zigzag corridors and blast doors made
to withstand a Hiroshima-size explosion, and
guarded by men who knew they'd have to be
ready to die for him, or be killed by him, Saddam
apparently could not sleep.
"All night long he heard a sound like the cocking
of a pistol," remembers Wolfgang Wendler, the
German engineer who supervised the project.
Wendler was summoned by angry officials to
find out what was wrong. He discovered a faulty
thermostat.
Today the bunker beneath the "305 Guest House"
in Baghdad's main palace compound is part of an
underground world of tunnels, shelters and stor-
age depots where Saddam may be hiding his most
fearsome weapons, as well as himself. Iraqi sci-
entist Hussein Shahristani and other exiles even
talk of a phantom subway that was built but never
opened in the 1980s.
... What is certain is that many underground bunk-
ers and tunnels do exist, and they could be a sub-
terranean nightmare for American and British forces.
Day and night some of the most powerful "bunker-
busting" bombs in the U.S. arsenal are being
brought to bear on the massively fortified infra-
structure. Some of the bunkers are buried so far
beneath the city that when British Member of Parl-
iament George Galloway met with Saddam in one
of them last August, he wrote about taking a high-
speed elevator "so deeply under ground my ears
were popping."
... the Iraqi capital is not the only city in the country
built above a warren of catacombs and secret pas-
sages --some of them centuries old-- as well as
other high-tech hiding places for troops, supplies
and senior officials.
... Some Egyptians who've worked on the capital's
underground fortifications talk fancifully about plans
to build a "mirror Baghdad" buried almost as deep
as the skyline is high. ...

the Tigris River, which bisects Baghdad, and

side them.
The cordon would differ from a siege, officials
explained, in that people who wanted to leave the
city would be permitted to go, and humanitarian

tempt to empty Baghdad of its civilian population
to isolate Iraqi forces entrenched there, because
the creation of huge refugee camps on the out-
skirts of the city could create an array of serious
