Dilip Kumar: The Pride of Pakistan
by Nikhil Patwardhan
Mr Dilip Kumar should definitely keep the Nishan-E-Pakistan.
Mr. Dilip Kumar has raised MILLIONS of Rupees for Imran Khan's hospital
in Pakistan and the Bosnian Muslims of Bosnia.
In addition, Mr. Dilip Kumar has certainly proved his patriotism to
India by the fact that he and his company have deprived the widows and
children of our pilots and naval officers, of a roof over their heads.
Many of the widows who have been deprived because of him are ALSO
MUSLIMS.
What is clear to all is that Mr. Dilip Kumar has not donated one Paisa
from his considerable wealth to the Indian defense forces which also
comprises of many many Muslims.
Newspapers seemed to have forgotten the Kargil crisis altogether and
instead devoted reams of paper to columns about "Thespian" Dilip
Kumar's anguish over the questioning of his patriotism.
Mr. Yusuf Khan aka Dilip Kumar ensured that the media was flooded with
reports such as "Dilip makes tearful plea to see Prime Minister
Vajpayee" and "Dilip is thinking of leaving Mumbai as it has lost its
cosmopolitan air", "Dilip traumatized by the Shiv Sena questioning his
patriotism", etc. etc. A barrage of ridiculous and unwanted information
about Dilip Kumar was thrust on Indian readers. Magazines like Rediff
online even went so far as to feature Amitabh Bachchan's thoughts on
the issue. Why on earth would anyone care about unrelated opinions such
as Bachchan's on this issue???
The propensity of useless information that has been churned out about
this thoroughly worthless man, makes us question what is truly
important to the journalists of India. National newspapers which cannot
find space for even a mention of the soldiers and heroes dying on the
Kargil battlefront found oodles of space available to discuss to death
the (non) actions of a virulently anti national, pan-Islamic, has-been
of an "actor". Quite frankly the issue of whether Mr. Yusuf Khan wants
to return his Nishan-E-Pakistan (some newspapers say Nishan-E-imtiaz)
award is entirely up to him. But the judgement of whether his refusal
to return the award means a lack of patriotism, is entirely upto the
Indian public to decide.
Let's examine the overrated controversy to unearth the real factors
underlying it.
First let's be honest, the fact that Yusuf Khan is a Muslim has
absolutely nothing to do with the issue. Protests from pseudo seculars
and Congressmen always harp on this point. What is in question here is
the fact that an Indian citizen was pleased to accept an award from a
country which has publicly declared Jihad on India. This country is not
only overtly hostile, but over the decades it's sole reason for
existence has been to antagonize and destroy India. Even if we were to
keep Pakistan's list of crimes restricted to the Kargil intrusion, it
would be one long list. Pakistan has beaten up India's foreign
representatives, it has tortured our soldiers in unimaginably inhuman
ways, it has murdered hundreds of civilians, it has displaced thousands
of Indians, it has violated our territorial integrity and flung wildly
false accusations with the intent to malign and vilify India. To any
normal nationalistic Indian citizen, such a record would certainly
inspire him/her to spit at the mention of Pakistan leave alone treat a
civilian award conferred by them with any amount of respect. But that
is exactly what Mr. Yusuf Khan insists on doing. Instead of doing what
any red blooded Indian who loves his country would have done in an
instant, Mr. Yusuf Khan whines and drones on endlessly about "Fascist
forces" and "blots on his patriotism". He ensures that the press is
flooded with repugnant stories about his opinions on Bal Thackeray and
Mumbai's lack of cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Second, the controversy began when Shiv Sena earlier this week took out
a morcha near Dilip Kumar's residence asking him to return the award.
When a Shiv Sena delegation met Dilip Kumar on Tuesday Dilip Kumar
commented that Kapil Dev's statement for calling off Sahara Cricket Cup
was "the wrong way of showing patriotism."
" Look, Kapil Dev thinks he is right under the present circumstances to
ask for what he did. At this juncture when the two countries are
fighting each other, game like this looks a bit meaningless. But making
a demand for calling off sports contact is wrong. Sports, arts,
cultures are great levelers between the two countries. These are the
mediums through which people communicate. And such communication is the
essence of life," says Dilip Kumar.
Perhaps Mr. Dilip Kumar is not aware that India is currently being
forced to sacrifice its soldiers on the Kashmir border because of
Pakistan's naked aggression. "Communication" can only be maintained
between two civilized nations of the world. Pakistan's violation of
India's borders, its inhuman torture of Indian soldiers and massacre of
hundreds of Indian civilians, clearly proves that it is NOT a civilized
nation. Perhaps Mr. Dilip Kumar should go to fight on the Kargil front
to understand exactly what the Pakistani army is "communicating" to our
soldiers everyday with their Stinger missiles.
When pointedly told that it is a bit difficult to digest this "kind of
essence of life" when day in and out bodies of soldiers who are sons,
brothers and fathers arrive at their hometown accompanied by weeping
mothers, sisters, wives and children, Mr. Dilip Kumar says "This is
indeed a tragic aspect of this age. Because of overstepping by some
persons or some miscalculation, we are in a war. But this should not be
led to the doors of culture,"
What miscalculation????? Is Mr. Dilip Kumar referring to miscalculation
on India's part or Pakistan's?? Does he mean that Pakistan
miscalculated their attack on India or is he implying that India
miscalculated and is somehow responsible for the conflict??
The Kargil conflict is NOT the result of a mere "miscalculation or
overstepping" on anyone's part. It is the result of a cold, calculated,
planned murderous strategy of Pakistan to threaten India's security and
throw her in turmoil.
Not only that, Mr. Dilip Kumar commented that the public in India and
Pakistan did not want war. "It's the Hukumats which are fighting. It's
not the war of the people," he felt. He blamed Pakistan for
"initiating" the conflict but also criticized INDIA for neglecting
Jammu and Kashmir. "They (Sharif) are the authors of war. What has
Pakistan done for Kashmir and what have WE done for it? We are fighting
for a patch of barren land and losing precious lives," he stated. When
asked whether he would visit the wounded soldiers in Kashmir,
he "regretted" that his old age would not allow him to travel to Drass
and Batalik.
To Mr. Dilip Kumar, the holy land of Kashmir may be just "a piece of
barren land" but to the entire Indian nation, it is an incomparable
symbol of our unity and identity. Perhaps Mr. Dilip Kumar does not know
an iota of history, otherwise he would surely not have insulted our
national heritage by asking what has India done for Kashmir?? This is
not the question that deserves to be asked, the right question for a
nationalistic Indian to ask is what has Kashmir done for India!
Dilip Kumar's actions speak far louder than words. The fact is that he
cherishes a prize from a country which seeks to destroy our national
integrity and culture. His being Muslim and Bal Thackeray's being Hindu
has NOTHING to do with it. Whatever Mr. Thackeray's political beliefs,
he has every right as a patriotic Indian to question Dilip Kumar's
nationalistic tendencies based on the actions done by him.
Let's see what Mr. Yusuf Khan's actual actions have been to prove his
love for India as opposed to Pakistan.
Mr. Yusuf Khan aka Dilip Kumar is the chairman of Geekay Exim India
Ltd, based in Mumbai. The Air Force and Naval Housing Board's (AFNHB)
primary responsibility is to ensure the construction of housing units
for the personnel and widows of personnel of the Indian Air Force and
Indian Navy on a no-profit-no-loss basis.
The Housing Board had placed fixed deposits (FDs) to the tune of Rs. 1
Crore for 12 months in December 1996, with Geekay Exim India ltd. In
December 1997, the Housing Board's Fixed deposit with Geekay became
mature, therefore Geekay was supposed to pay them with a refund check.
The refund check which was presented by Geekay in December 1997
bounced. Geekay then committed itself to paying the matured amount
which it owed to the Board via a fresh repayment schedule from February
1998 to December 1998. Even this promised payback was not fulfilled.
Chairman Dilip Kumar and his company Geekay again changed tactics and
demanded that YET ANOTHER repayment schedule be made available to them
starting April 1999, through November 99.
Even as the matter was taken to the high court and a fresh schedule was
advised, the payments from Dilip Kumar's company did not commence. Now
Geekay is proposing a 50-month schedule beginning in November 1999
before the Company Law Board (CLB), say the sources. The company also
promised to mortgage certain flats at Gurgaon in the AFNHB's favour as
security, but when the documents were scrutinized, the flats were not
found to belong to Geekay at all!
Geekay Exim representatives, will only say this much ``A fresh schedule
was put forth in the High Court, and the payments are being made
slowly. The intentions are clear: We are making the payment, even if
they are slightly delayed.''
Two years is not a "slight delay" to the widows and children who are
being deprived of a roof over their heads thanks to Dilip Kumar and his
company.
Mr. Dilip Kumar and his company have amply proved their patriotism to
the Country with this event. For TWO years the widows and personnel of
the Air Force and Navy who fight valiantly for India's defense, were
CHEATED of the financing that they needed for housing. Even as the
valiant Indian Air Force Pilots are defending Indian citizens like Mr.
Dilip Kumar from the enemy, he and his company are ensuring that their
widows and children do not get the housing they deserve!
Over and above this Mr. Dilip Kumar is weeping over the fact that his
precious Nishan-E-Pakistan is being questioned!
What has Dilip Kumar's role in national affairs been in the past?
In 1997 he addressed the All India Muslim OBC's Conference and exhorted
the Muslims to "unite and fight for their rights". He sang praises of
the criminal Mulayam Singh Yadav and Laloo Prasad Yadav, two of the
country's most notorious and harmful criminals. Concerning Laloo Prasad
Yadav he said that the Bihar chief minister was being singled out in
the fodder scam. " So many scams have taken place in the country. But
is anyone bothered about their culprits? From what I have seen, I have
found Mr. Laloo Prasad Yadav to be genuinely concerned about the poor
and their welfare," he said.
Yes indeed to Mr. Dilip Kumar the same Laloo Prasad Yadav who has made
Bihar a casteist and social hell is the savior of the Indian masses!
But Mr. Yusuf Khan did not end his tirade there, he demanded 8.33 per
cent reservation for Muslims within the 27 per cent earmarked for
other "backward castes. Apparently Mr. Yusuf Khan would like the
backward and deprived classes of India to be even further deprived by
snatching away their reservations and giving them to Muslims.
In a hysterical tirade the seventy year old man who has gone as far as
the US, UK and Pakistan without feeling his age, to raise funds for
Bosnian Muslims, displayed his almost psychotic hatred for Hindu
political elements.
" Thackeray says Tum Pakistani ho... they ( the Sainiks) judge me as if
I am being brought out from the jail. In these circumstances I do think
of leaving Mumbai. The entire city of Mumbai is living under the terror
of Sena supremo Bala Saheb Thackeray. They control not only the film
industry but the government itself. The Bharatiya Janata Party is
merely playing second fiddle to them. The Sena has the whole of filmdom
in its claws. Today within the industry, labor is Shiv Sena's, Cine
artists association is under the Sena. The controversy is because of
Thackeray's hatred for me. Thackeray is fond of me. He can't do without
me. Har waqt mere pichhe pada rahta hai (He is always after me)! I
think he hates my Pakistani connection that I was born there. But it
can't be undone. I was born in India" he said in delirious tones.
Dilip Kumar letter to Prime Minister Vajpayee was a clear indicator of
this malicious person's intention to politicize the issue and give it a
communal color.
In the letter he had written: "Were you, revered Prime Minister, to ask
me to surrender the award in the larger interests of the nation, I
shall gladly abide by you because my acceptance of the award enjoyed
your consent. However, as submitted earlier, I cannot get myself to
yield to this blind and ill-informed pressure. However, if I were to
hold my ground under the vitiated circumstances, I cannot do so without
your tacit support."
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has told Dilip Kumar to retain the
award.
Yusuf Khan has proved his malicious intent to politicize the issue by
the comments he made after the PM's advice.
" I know that I am being targeted because I belong to the Muslim
community and was born in Pakistan. At this juncture the Shiv Sainiks
should better concentrate on the "real crisis on the Kargil front".
As we all know the fact that Yusuf Khan is a Muslim had absolutely
NOTHING to do with this controversy. It is Muslims like Yusuf Khan who
give the Muslims of India a bad name.
What is clear to all nationalistic Indians is that Mr. Dilip Kumar has
not donated one Paisa from his considerable wealth to the Indian
defense forces. In contrast he has raised MILLIONS of Rupees for Imran
Khan's hospital in Pakistan and the Bosnian Muslims of Bosnia.
In addition, Mr. Dilip Kumar has certainly proved his patriotism to
India by the fact that he and his company have deprived the widows and
children of our pilots and naval officers, of a roof over their heads.
Many of the widows who have been deprived because of him are ALSO
MUSLIMS.
Dilip Kumar should definitely keep the Nishan-E-Pakistan. It is the
perfect symbol of his anti-Indian loyalties and treasonous character.
As we all know the fact that Yusuf Khan is a Muslim had absolutely
NOTHING to do with this controversy. It is Muslims like Yusuf Khan who
give the Muslims of India a bad name.
