Just looked at the paper the other day and saw that another child
of Soeharto's greedy half-brother, Sudwikatmono, is becoming an
instant businesswoman. We all know his first daughter, the one
married to the Panamanian plumber who owns Jakarta's Planet
Hollywood and has a collection of US$ 500,000 Cartier watches.
Kind of an Imelda Marcos in the making... Gee, the parallels
between Indonesia and the Philippines get closer all the time.
It's like this. Sudwikatmono's second daughter, Tri Hanurita will
be the agent for Emery Worldwide. Transportation is big Muslim
business in Indonesia (and Malaysia, too); you need to get
approval from the hypocrite Tutut (she wears that silly scarf
over her head all the time in public to show how pious she is but
everyone knows she has a heart blacker than Al Capone. He was in
the transport business, too, in a manner of speaking) Anyway, one
can imagine that in the case of Tri Hanurita, getting approval
for Fed-Ex's poor cousin, Emery, wasn't too difficult considering
she will not be treading on the toes of Tutut or the generals.
And her father is in good with Soeharto, Bapak Pembangunan Anak-
2-Nya, as well.
In my observation of the Indonesian situation, I have to ask, why
do "anak pejabat" and "anak teman pejabat" (children of political
big-shots and children of friends of political big-shots) always
get into business? They have access to unlimited money. Why don't
they study something other than business in school? Like a
profession or biology or art or something other than how to
generate more money? Why don't they take advantage of the
blessing of all that money they have access to and just enjoy a
life of creative leisure? Stupid question?

Actually I think his dad was/is a general or something in the Panamanian
Army. Big surprise, huh?

I think Indonesians, like most people, are opportunists. Their
philosophy must be, "Grab now while the gettin's good!" And besides, do
you think those these people will have to work at these businesses
they're getting? They own it. Doesn't mean that they'll actually be
doing the day to day running.
Why don't they take advantage of the

Exactly. Take up a hobby other than accumulating mass wealth. They're
already so rich it's vulgar. Kick back. Enjoy life on a yacht
somewhere.

No. In a jungle you can do anything.
