The other day, somebody in the net was asking the "Mudras"
of Vaggeyakara Trimurtulu.
Vakku = Sound + Geya = Song, means Persons who write the song
and also compose the music for the song in a Raga.
Firstly, Mudra means the "Identification Mark" which the writer
implants into the work. (Might be as a copyright or patent
during those old days !)
Each writer has a speciality in using the Mudra. Meaning, in all
their works, we can see the mark of identification - Mudra
somewhere or other in the composition.
Vaggeyakara Mudra
Thyagaraja - Uses his own name in the song or composition.
Mutthuswami Dikshitar - Uses the word "Guru Guha" and also the
name of the Raga in the composition.
Syama Sastri - Uses the word "Syama Krishna" somewhere.
Swati Tirunal - Name "Padmanabha"
Prof Sambamurthi - Sambavinuta
Ksheytrayya - MuvvaGopala
In the song Vatapi Ganapathim Bhajeham, Muthuswami Dikshitar
uses `Anadi "Guru Guha" Shobhita Bimbam, "Hamsadhwani" Bhushita
Herambam.... using both the name of the Raga and the word Guru Guha.
Similarly, for other compositions..
Types of Mudras (Marks of Identification) for those interested:
1. Writer's Mudra
a) Swanama Mudra
Using own name like Thyagaraja, Jayadeva, Narayana Tirtha etc
b) Paranama Mudra
Using someother name
eg: Annayya uses "Umadasa", Patnam Subramanyam Iyer uses
"Venkatesa", Subbaraya Sastri uses "Kumara."
2. Raga Mudra - Like Sri Mutthuswami using name of the raga.
3. Tala Mudra - Giving the name of the Tala in all works.
4. Acharya Mudra - Giving the name of Master or Guru.
5. Raja Mudra - Name of the King ruling the land. (Poshaka)
6. Vamsa Mudra - Name of the family.
7. Prabhanda Mudra - Name of the lierary work the song belongs.
8. Nayaka Mudra - Name of the hero. (Muvva Gopala by Khestrayya)
9. Stala Mudra - Name of the place - visits - piligrimages.
10. Birudu Mudra - Some using the Titles as mudra.
11. Lakshana Grandha - Dont know the details.
12. Swagrama Mudra - eg: Kshetrayya using the name of Movva town.
Honestly, I dont know the ABC of music and no flames if there
are mistakes. I referred to a book and am posting this info.
Still I curse myself of not learning this divine Gift of God
through Gurumukha.
Fellow netters who are gifted, why dont you share your knwoledge-
atleast by posting the film songs and their ragas , thereby
developing some kind of interest.
