Most of Telugu stories and novels are probably not the worth the paper
they are printed on. I read the popular stuff like Yaddanapudi and Kommuri
Sambasiva Rao in school because I was not capable
of reading popular stuff in English. After I came to college I started
enjoying classic writers like Ko. Ku. I don't enjoy tyhe popular stuff
today. But I still enjoy reading Ko.Ku, Kalipatnam Rama Rao and similar
writers. If you have not already made a resolve never to touch a Telugu
novel, I recommend them.
Talking about popular novels, recently I read one by Yandamoori Veerendranath.
After I came to US in 87, I never read any of his novels. But I read most of
his novels before coming here. This novel is called 'Antarmukham'. It is
certainly different from what he usually writes. It is somewhat closer
to his earlier novels like 'Rishi' or 'Chengalvapoodanda' than his later
ones. He wrote it when his father was on the deathbed. The novel will
neither go down as a classic in Telugu literature nor will it become a
popular hit but I enjoyed reading it.

[endorsements of Ko.ku and others deleted.]
I'll save these endorsements and next time I get a chance, will try
out some of the writers mentioned. Thanks.
[endorsements of Ko.ku and others deleted.]
I too, am a latecomer to quality Telugu writings in some sense. I have
read Ko.ku's works and enjoyed them. I haven't yet got around to Kalipatnam,
but managed to read some older classics like Maalapalli and "chivaraku
migiledi". I liked both though the latter was a bit obscure. Maalapalli
(by Unnava Lakshminarayana) is sort of an epic saga set in Guntur
district during the independence struggle and combines caste politics,
and some mysticism in the context of the freedom struggle.
Another writer I can strongly recommend is Madhurantakam Rajaram. (who
recently won the Sahitya akademi award). He focusses on lower middle class
life in rural Rayalaseema, which comes alive in his short stories. I am
no critic when it comes to discussing plot and characterization, but
Rajaram's stories work for me. He has a simple style (which hides his
tremendous command of Telugu) and his stories are compassionate without
being sentimental.
What do people think of Chivukula Purushottam as a writer? I remember
reading a couple of his novels and thinking they were trash. I had
heard differing opinions, though, so it might be a matter of taste.

My personal views.
