There are plenty of popular film songs based on classicial ragas.
Once we develop an "ear" for the music, it is interesting
and amusing that even persons not really trained in any
classical music can really develop a taste for "Ragas" in the
film songs.
Can you believe that "Abba Nee Tiyyani Debba" from the film
"Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari" is based on "Sivaranjani" raga !
But for the song to be catchy, the music directors use the
base of the raga.
If we know that a song is based on a particular raga, if we
try singing the song in a slow pace or at a speedy pace,
we will be able to identify other similar songs in the same raga.
The best example is a song from Amara Deepam - Naa Jeevana
Sandhya Samayamlo Oka Devata ... If we try to sing the same
song in a slow pace (RPM) , we can make out that there is a song
in the movie Andame Anandam - "Madhumasa Velalo, Marumalle Thotalo,
manasaina chinnadi - ledelano" which are based on raga "Khamas."
