Subject: When will Telugu films get real?
Did anyone feel that only Indian movies provide entertainment in the
form of duets (background songs as well as dancing steps)? If so, does
any one know the first Indian movie that had a duet? It had to be a talkie
and the duet couldn't be a group performance (as in an opera).
Now to some opinions: Am I the only one who thinks duets are excellent
bug repellents, if only provide breaks from an otherwise heady (achy)
drama? It seems heroines are especially gifted with the rich
imagination so that they can conceive of every dancing step, nuance,
beat, and of course, the never failing bare feet, with their fiancee.
I was watching this ego-centric, narcissistic movie directed and acted
by Dasari Narayana Rao called "Mamagaru" or something, where this poor
babe, who can't afford to eat balanced food (Dasari as the director
makes her serve him, the actor father, ganji--the viscous liquid left
after cooking rice with excess water), dressed not in rags but in
exotic colorful clothes (I'm sure Dasari made sure she looked good on
the silver screen), when accosted by a 6'3'' Ravi-Sastry-type
unathletic, drum-stick variety, hirsute 25 yr. old, self-proclaimed
hero of the movie, launches herself into a dream sequence, where she
ain't making vicarious love to her crickety-boy, but strangely dancing
with him in some park, which is empty to the last insect in the
feeding chain, leaving some happy flowering plants to thrive in
abundance, under apparently white-hot noon Sun, with not even a swear
drop on her brow.
This is not the first time I've watched a duet, but this is the first
time I am questioning the probability of it ever happening? Let me put
it this way: what is the probability that you will wear good clothes
and don't have a decent meal to eat? what non-zero probability can be
given for finding a park to dance without stepping on some homeless
person's throat? what non-negative probability, Bayesian preferably,
can be assigned to an event where a man indulges in erotic dance
instead of having more satisficing, by general population standards
of India, sex with a bear-footed woman, and in realistic terms who
couldn't afford to wear any clothes, and hence would've been nude but for
the generosity of the director? (Even Charlie Chaplin was a director-actor and
in such sequences made sure he gifted some clothes to the orphan he would
like to shack-up in the movie.)
Isn't it time, we are shown what happens behind the scenes, in-between
the scenes, than in actual scenes, by the Telugu directors? I wonder
how many unfortunate kids (I was one too) out there in AP growing up
thinking, one day, they could dance with a girl as good looking as
Vijaya Santi or Sri Devi. I bet they wouldn't hold any girls' hands,
unless they sell bangles or become their husbands, whichever is
profitable. Meanwhile, the Telugu teen-ager grows up like a mutant
duet-crazy tap dancer, until he meets the real tap dancers in
Bronx....right? NOT!

I have my own views on this. But I can relate a particular community that s
handled this matter admirably without any government intervention. In all
probability, the Orissa legislation may be extraconstitutional, because it
infringes on the religious rights of a person (marriages are performed
according to religious rituals) in inviting his relatives and friends
to his wedding and caring for the guests ()again beset with enormous
religious content in Hinduism.).
Leaving aside all this, I can narate the way teh Vysya community of
Proddatur town handled marriage expenses.
Marriages are usually celebrated with a lot of pomp and chivelry. There were
times when an marriage used to last roughly seven days, and relatives
and other guests were being cared for a minimum of that duration.
Such elaborate weddings have been common place among many communities.
Gradually, as the financial effect of such weddings had taken its toll,
marriages used to be celebrated for three days. Now a days however, it
lasts for about a day and a half.
The Proddatur town of AP is famous for its vysya community; a thriving
and prosperous mercantile community based on gold and jewelry trade,
and oil seeds etc. Not all members of the community are rich. Some are
rich and some are poor, and many are in the middle. All the vysyas were
members of Aarya Vysya Mahasabha, a caste organization serving the cultural
and welfare interests of its people and also others. The organization
itself was very much respected by every person of all communities. It was
almost like a cultural organization.
It became a custom, in that community, that on the day of the marriage
the bride and bridegroom will ride a fully lit flower boat (lighted)
through the town. In those days, say early seventies, an average
flower boat used to cost about 15,000 rupees. Having this parade
was a prestige issue in the copmmunity, and making elaborate and
costly expeditures on this procession was not unheard of. Actually
some of my friends from that community used to rate weddings on
that single event. The Aarya Vysya mahasabha realised that the flower
boat was taking a very toll on its poorer members, because they were
also competing in that. So all the members met one day and decided that
for three years, as an experiment, in the town of Proddatur flower boat
parades will be banned. Any vysya violating the rule will be ex-communicated.
The rule did the trick. Rich people feared excommunication in the display
of their wealth and in establishing values that others cannot afford.
The poor felt that it has reduced the burden on them in the competetion
for social status. The rule was extended after the first three years
as it worked well.
I don't know the present situation.

About the Dynamics deal. After about 10 mails to me enquiring what
an "operator id" was, I called up Dynamics, only to find that the rates
quoted to me were for Iran, which is a country in India :-) The operator
kept insisting on this and said that for all calls to India outside Iran
:):), the rates were higher. So Dynamics is out of the window [unless you
happen to live in the Iranian part of India] and it's back to
Sprint/MCI/ATT.

(Got this from the list of telugu people subscribed to WTND).
have created a wonderful software called `rit' for UNIX machines. It
is based on an incredibly beautiful telugu script fonts made by smt.
and sri. mukkavilli... Maybe rao gaaru and kishore gaaru would take
the trouble of introducing their software AGAIN.. !! It needs a software
called LaTeX, and also needs a UNIX computer to run. They are presently
working on versions that will run on VAX and HP machines. To those who DONT
have either UNIX or VAX machines, especially those with archiac IBM
mainframes and PROFs mailing systems : have you ever considered suiciding ?
They write in the manual : ``You are free to distribute copies of rit;''
Their recommended SCRIPT is given below : You MAY use it (nobody is forcing
you)... but a lot of people on the usenet group use it

Hi, I spent the last six months in a rural area in Andhra
Pradesh (Visakh District) working for a non-governmental organization
that has done pioneering work is reducing poverty, illiteracy and ill-
health in the region. The group - Bhagavatula Charitable Trust - has
been acclaimed for its work, and focusses on creating self-reliance and
self-confidence in the villagers. It works through village-level women's
societies that make all local decisions.
I am selling handmade holiday greeting cards for BCT. Since it is
almost Christmas already, I'm filling up your newsspace with this -
I'm sorry for that. The cards are made by poor women in Visakh city, and
all profits go to the organization of village women's societies. They are
fabric patterns with sequins, etc. of elephants, peacocks, and other common
Indian symbols. They come with envelopes, of course.
Each card is $1.25. I have only 200 cards total. (lack of suitcase space!)
